And here's a reminder of the mediocre team we are.

If you going to point out CMU's big win...let's not forget OUr loss to a team that has one FBS win.....vs. Ohio

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2RGapCwLZQ

That's fair enough. The TX St loss was, and is, a head scratcher. If you will recall, we would have won it in regulation if not for a ridiculous fumble on what would have been our final drive of the game by Windham. Without that fumble, at worst, we would have punted and left TSU with a whole lot of real estate to cover with very little time left. Instead, they got the ball in OHIO territory and were able to get the tying score before time ran out. Still, we should have put them away early so a late fumble wouldn't have made any difference.

Well, dear nattering nabob friend, a coach you admire very much as a vastly different opinion about Rush's NFL potential: http://tinyurl.com/jllvntb

Exactly. I don't think anyone thinks this game should've been a gimmie. But this is a game Ohio should've won. That's where (at least my) frustration lie. This is just a microcosm of where this program is. Inconsistency when it comes to landing the knockout punch. Good programs find ways to win these kinds of games on a consistent basis. Ohio just isnt' there....and it's frustrating that after 12 years, Solich & staff haven't gotten them there.

Bingo.

The thought that there are inherent/structural things keeping OHIO from winning a MAC is a sad thought. And comical; it fallsw under any excuse if you're willing to accept excuses. If it's true, why have a team?

I'm a 'caricature' because I've seen for years what some of you now see...and too many still won't.

Point to all the small facets that you want--turnovers, had it won in regulation but for this or that play, injuries, etc, etc, etc. But the fact is that this coaching staff hasn't gotten the job done.

But, hey, keep deluding yourself into thinking it well, all you SFB.

OCF--Did you see Rush's throws? Have you seen the arms on the NFL QB's? I've been wrong before but I'll be amazed if he plays in the NFL. Haven't seen a MAC QB in years who's NFL caliber. If the guy at BG last year wasn't NFL level, I can assure you that no one we've seen this year is.

Let's all get together and sing campfire songs as we keep allowing the mediocrity to continue.

Monroe, did you actually look at the link I posed? You are a better judge of NFL talent than Fleck?

Again, I'm not excusing our fumbling and other poor play last night, but man a little balance would help put things into perspective -- just a little.

CMU, a team with a win over Okla State. Ohio, with a win over Toledo. Both with a bye week. Home game for CMU. L.C. had pointed out, it would depend upon which CMU team showed up. Well, the good CMU team showed up. Like the broadcaster said, not so much Ohio losing as CMU winning a good hard fought game. After the game we saw Basham & Rush, Strobel & Rush, Bonamego & Blair Brown, etc. exchanging respectful post game well wishes. No one hanging their head, both teams fought hard. Ohio lost, but, this was a game to be remembered, without shame. If you have played or coached this game you will have experienced this from both sides. If you win, celebrate. If you lost, move on, heads still high.

Bcat2--Thank your for your 'everyone gets a trophy, any performance will be accepted' remark. Again. As usual.

People seem to think that I'm repetitive. I don't know why. I do know that many now share my perspective--and that list is growing. It is fun seeing 'monroewasright' as a handle during the in-game chat rooms. (And, no, that's not handle that I've ever used.)

But Bcat2, it's not good to be repetitive with viewpoints which don't square with achieved reality.

OCF--I'm quite sure it's puffery. I believe that the ESPN announcers several times stated that Rush is pure NFL talent. Did you see his arm. Did you see several wounded ducks thrown and no particular arm strength?!

Well, I think DL Knock, the walkon WR converted to RB is healthy. He could have gotten some carries.

AJ is out for the season.
Vinny Emanuele may be done with his career.
Brown has a couple injuries, but is able to play, but he may not be able to handle 20-30 carries.
Irons has issues with hamstrings, ankles, and shoulder, I believe.
Hardy has a broken arm.
White can handle a few runs, but he's not really a guy you want to give it to 20 times, either.

So, with no running back left to handle the load, Ohio had to rely on Maxwell to run and throw, and he had his worst game throwing the ball. Despite all that, Ohio still outgained CMU by 357 yards to 286. They came back, and nearly won, but the 4-1 turnover advantage they handed CMU was too much.

Did they lose due to injuries? No. They adjusted the game plan to give them the best chance of winning with what they had. They should have won, but unfortunately the turnover advantage they've had all season caught up with them. If Ohio can win the next two, this game won't matter in the end.

I'm not sure we can guarantee that was his worst game throwing the ball. He's not an accurate passer, and he seems to be hesitant in his decision-making.

Last night: 16-36 44% 208 yards
Toledo: 7-16 43% 157 yards
Kent: 11-19 58% 127 yards

He doesn't light up the box score.

This is my fault, by the way. When AJ went down vs. Texas State, I made a comment to a buddy along the lines of, "Well, if there's one position where we can afford an injury, it's running back." I was so very very wrong, and I apologize to the sports gods for that comment.

Ditto. He's certainly a talented player that's best days are ahead of him. I'm happy to know he has three years to grow. Definitely see much more of an upside with him than I did with Sprague or even Vick (although, I admit...I thought Vick was going to be good.....ugh)

But yes, he certainly has happy feet back there and is a little erratic with the throws and makes some questionable decisions at times....but that's a freshman for you. I willing to live with that.

What terrifies me is the coaching he'll get....and the position the coaches will put him in. (i.e. trying to get him killed with multiple QB runs...he needs to learn to slide sometimes) Also...it seems to be feast or famine with him whether he just chucks it deep or throws to the sidelines. Rarely goes across the middle to TE or Reid. (P.S. It baffles me Reid doesn't get more balls thrown his way...too good to be this under utilized.)

The comment about Reid seems spot on. He just seems to catch what's thrown to him.

I don't watch, but I assume he gets open a reasonable amount of time?

DFC--Let's bet on Rush. Name some reasonable stakes.

Why would I bet when I don't know? I don't claim to know. I especially don't claim to know in the face of experts who study this kind of thing for a living. The difference is you claim to know. What I DO know is that if Cooper Rush doesn't make it to the NFL, it won't be based on anything you think you saw in one game.

While this guy Gil Brandt thinks Rush has the skills "4. Between the run blocking of Pittsburgh OLs Dorian Johnson and Adam Bisnowaty (vs. Penn State) and the passing of Central Michigan QB Cooper Rush (vs. Oklahoma State), a few prospects showed on Saturday that they are better than I thought they were. -- Gil Brandt"

I tend to agree he is not on an NFL roster next year (though if Colt McCoy can hang around...) - but then no one on our defense will probably be playing on Sunday either - so I'm not sure what the debate is about.

I think folks were trying to build up this CMU team into some sleepwalking powerhouse with an NFL-caliber QB to soften the blow that it was a game Ohio should've won.

Ohio is more talented...a better team....and failed to get the job done. But rather than just saying that, some people have to start throwing up all over themselves about how good of a team CMU really is.

We didn't lose at Alabama by a TD. We lost to a 5-5 team (2-4 in the MAC) that had lost three straight.....including losses to Kent and Miami. Two teams Ohio has beat (although, I'm not sure we would beat Miami if they played again right now)

Yup - team we could have beaten. I was traveling and only caught the last quarter. Following as I drove, when I saw us down 17-0 - my thought was "Damn" - when I saw it 17-10 - I knew we were back in it. then 17-17. Having been a fan since '83, I can not recall the last time we battled back against a decent team (not great, not suck, but decent). As excat (who knows a bit more than most here) commented, the team played hard - they could have easily said, "let's just get out of here and win it against Akron).

Hell - gotta give the WR credit for the go ahead TD - great catch. I was hoping we would get the late TD and go for 2 - for the win - would have been fun, even if it failed.

Fortunately, we have a second chance against Akron. Tough to get up for every game - just ask Clemson and Dabo Sweeney. Relax, I'm not beginning to compare the two, but they had no business losing to Pitt at home. Happens - need to regroup and take care of business in Athens.

You, cc-cat, are either getting old and losing your memory, or you weren't a Bobcat fan during our freshman year (1979) when we attended a few games in Peden. Were you a Bobcat basketball fan during all those games you watched in the Convo prior to 1983?

DFC--I have an opinion on Rush in re the NFL. Disagree if you will, preferably phrasing a counter view in light of the evidence of last night's game. Otherwise, why are you so freaking aggrieved that I have an opinion on Rush? Calm down.

44--You are concise and on point today.

cc-cat: If you have time, look at the first two quarters of last night vs. CMU. I don't think even those who most avidly oppose my viewpoints will tell you that we were anything other than flat and horrible. Really, really bad.

Cooper Rush is a 2nd -4th round steal. Think Jets, Chiefs or San Fran. Actually he could start for the LA Rams this week over Goff. To your point about BG QB Matt Johnson, he was 5'11" and could not see over NFL offensive linemen. Rush is 6'3 and 230 lbs and can run plays from under center or shotgun (Johnson was more in Shotgun). He will make a roster in a pass happy NFL league. He is also better than Ball States QB Wenning who stuck on his first year. Just my opinion...

For the record, I said I was worried about this game before it transpired. I never thought that this was a game "we should win." It was a game I hoped we would win. I knew that CMU's record was completely deceptive. I had watched them play against OSU-Southern Campus. So, my rationalizations are not completely after the fact. I was more worried about this game then any other game we've played so far. In retrospect, I should have been worried about TSU and EMU, also. I was worried about Tennessee, but frankly I was more confident of a possible upset than going into the CMU game. I was cautiously optimistic before the Toledo game.

Please tell us another story, Uncle Monroe!

If Cooper Rush is on an active NFL roster come week one 2017, I'll buy everyone on BA a beer.

I'll buy the 2nd round

Ohio had them on their heels on their first drive... And then fumbled inside the 20. Then proceeded to stuff them for the next few drives on defense... But the offense sputtered.

Had a chance to bury a team that was scuffling on a three game losing streak and low on confidence.

We didn't.

Instead let them hang around, build confidence and return to form.

Should've and could've buried them when they had a chance.
