So currently we have 12 teams in the MAC. If the MAC were to expand to 16 teams (I know this wouldnt happen but lets imagine), what 4 teams would you like to add to the conference and why?

1. North Dakota State - obviously 5 time champs and had #2 pick Carson Wentz.
2. Richmond Spiders- they are good in basketball and football. Gets us a footprint in VA.
3. James Madison- stadium sits 25000 and they are competitive. Basketball and football
4. Wofford/Coastal Carolina- wbo wouldnt want to go to South Carolina for a game. Beautiful state and in Landon Cohens backyard.

What do you think?

1. Marshall
2. WKU (raid C-USA, which is a shadow of its former self)
3. JMU, good call, ExCat2
4. Middle Tennessee (decimate C-USA)

We should be going t'other way, with it. Instead of raiding the CAA for teams to join the MAC, we should be angling to join the CAA and dropping to FCS.

I'll agree with OCF, with one change: Sub in App State for Middle Tennessee.

And I agree it would be a good move to consider this for the MAC. When I say consider, I mean research and see what it would look like. See if it makes sense. Standing pat for a long time made sense. It doesn't mean it necessarily does for the long haul.

Ohio is one of the very best football recruiting states up there with Florida and Texas. Ohio has 8 programs in FBS while Florida has 7 and Texas has 12. Delaware, Maine and Montana are at the FCS level because of limited recruiting prospects and the ability to give more in-state kids a shot at the team at the lower competitive level. There are so many quality recruits in Ohio that offering 85 scholarships at the FBS level is the best way to bring them in.

Most Memorable Bobcat Events Attended
2010 97-83 win over Georgetown in NCAA 1st round
2012 45-13 victory over ULM in the Independence Bowl
2015 34-3 drubbing of Miami @ Peden front of 25,086

there is no scenario where adding an FCS program is a good idea.
there is no scenario where adding a football-only program is a good idea.

Here are the only candidates the MAC should ever consider for expansion-
1. Any current B1G school.
2. Cinci or UConn.

Would you mind expanding on why you think adding only those schools should be the approach? You are presuming that any of them would actually want to be part of the MAC, which many would assume to be unlikely.

I couldn't disagree more. There are some really great FCS programs(for football only) that would improve the quality of the MAC. I would be happy to take NDST into the MAC. They would compete for the title every year. I would've also been happy with taking APP State in the MAC. With how they're playing it looks like we missed adding a great program. Both of those schools are wayyyyy better then EMU will ever be.

Geography has to be considered and NDST just doesn't fit. I like JMU, WKU, and App State and of course our "friends" in WV. On the other hand with 16 teams we wouldn't get to play some traditional rivals like BG and Toledo.

I agree that there aren't many that would make sense. Those 4 and Illinois State come to mind. I particular WKU and Marshall would work. I don't know that anyone would be worth the hassle of 14 teams.

The MAC's two greatest features are its geographic proximity and its shared history (10/12 members together for +40yrs.) We don't need to add anyone, especially above 12 total. Any school we add should instantly upgrade the MAC, not be an upstart we hope and dream will be awesome some day. I say Cinci and UConn because they are the only 2 G5 schools that enhance our conference immediately and fit our geographic footprint. I omit Marshall and Temple because we used to date but we broke up so now we're moving on.

UConn is not an attractive football add, their only real value comes from bball. I also don't assume either team would ever willingly join the MAC, its a wishlist not a prediction.

Bottom line- the MAC doesn't need to add anyone unless we get down below 9 full members. FCS hopefuls only cheapen the brand and should be avoided at all costs.

Plus, the UConn women's basketball team might do some damage in the MAC.

The MAC shouldn't look to expand. Twelve is a really good number; 14/16 only means that each school gets a smaller share of the ESPN pie. And given ESPN's financial situation, we certainly don't want to reopen negotiations with them.

But the MAC should have a contingency plan in case one or more teams wind up in the AAC after it gets raided from B12 expansion. If AAC loses one or more teams, they could look to the MAC for a substitute; at the moment, Toledo would be the most attractive MAC school. I wouldn't want us to get stuck with a NSMU or Idaho as a filler. We would need a well-respected school that's interested in a long-term deal in all sports.
