To my knowledge, and I could definitely be wrong, this is the first person who was not a football player to be diagnosed.

Head trauma is head trauma.

I just don't think that anyone ever really investigated any sport but football.

I would think hockey players, especially in pre-helmet days, could be prime candidates.
I still remember the opening scene from Jerry Maguire with his hockey player client who had so many concussions that his memory was already shot.

Same thing with downhill skiers.

I referee soccer. US soccer has implemented new rule this year banning heading the ball for kids in the under 12 age groups.

I've seen crazier things happen.

As I've said before,I used to play men's soccer at O.U.

We were always practicing heading.
I still remember the coach telling us that,if you head the ball properly, you shouldn't really feel it.

My problem with "heading" was bumping heads when two guys went up for the ball at the same time.

I don't think I ever got a concussion,no symptoms at least, but I did end up with a few winner headaches.

Cue the Bill's GM; "People weren't meant to play football, play soccer, ride BMX, play hockey, ski, play rugby, fall off ladders, etc."

I happen to agree with the man but that won't make people stop. People weren't meant to eat Big Macs either but there are plenty of McDonalds' still in business.

This begs the question, what were people meant to do?

It is very simple for me... We all know the risks. Players know the risk. If you are willing to take those risks, that is your choice. It only gets complicated for me with kids... At what age should someone be deemed adult enough to make choices for themselves?

I don't have time to look it up now, but there have been numerous reports of CTE (or CTE-like symptoms) in Soccer (mostly overseas), Rugby, and Aussie-rules football. And, of course, boxing.
