I have to totally agree with D.A. on this one. He's right but I'll go even further- there's no way Ohio would even approach spending $50 million to renovate or redo Peden Stadium. First and foremost probably because Ohio doesn't have the will to do so- it simply doesn't want to. That kind of $ can be better spent elsewhere on campus. Especially when one considers that Peden's only used 6 days a year. Heck, half of this board thinks Ohio's spending $5.5 million (a paltry sum in major FBS football) in private funds for an academic center is a huge waste of $ as in their opinion it's just a glorified study hall. Neither the stomach nor the will is there on Ohio's part to spend tens of millions of dollars on the football program's infrastructure, and IMHO that's a very good thing.

Besides, I don't think building a new stadium is the magic elixir some may think it is. Akron's absolutely beautiful Infocision Stadium built for $61 million hasn't exactly lifted that program from the depths.

To add 5,000 seats to Peden with the infrastructure is in the 6-8 million dollar neighborhood. The student side redo we talk about could be done with institutional funds under the guise of improving ADA compliance and comfort for the students. Its what fans have been asking for a long time. My thoughts are we won't see it until the next administration since the one in place is executing a round of upgrades at the moment.

Well Brooklyn is 2-10 and next to last in the east of the Association, so I'd say that qualifies.

With people freaking the eff out because the President was placed in temporary housing due to 29 Park having been infested with bats for over a decade, and after the First Lady broke her foot trying to flee from one of the pests, can you imagine how warmly the University community would embrace a $100MM expansion project for Peden?

That Boise expansion never got done. The most important thing to be more nationally competitive is to upgrade the schedules both home and road. No more FCS schools when you can schedule in Charlotte, New Mexico State or UMass. Bring some names annually to Peden. Syracuse, Vanderbilt, BYU, Colorado are examples. The annual FCS game was a great idea when Ohio needed 7 or 8 wins to have a chance at a bowl. That time has passed with 6-6 MAC teams picked for bowls. Might as well raise the bar on the schedule but maintain 6 home games.

I generally subscribe to the theory that if you build it, they will come. However, when it comes to putting millions into sprucing up Pedan, I am not sure that would happen. Construction projects are always costly. It never ceases to amaze me when I look at a simple road work upgrade, or see a small building go up in Columbus and I see the price tag way into the millions that construction projects are always more costly than one would think.

Perhaps some corporate or private giving could help, but I seem to recall that some faculty members get upset by this even when the university doesn't have to put a whole lot up for the project.

It all comes down to the team's profile. Coach Solich has done wonders, and the MAC sure has made strides from the days when they were never on ESPN to games we see now. However, how many times have we seen Toledo (going back to Nick Saban) or Northern Illinois lose coaches once they start getting on the national radar. Unless the MAC starts supplanting the American (former Big East) which it could, we will always be chasing the dream of being what we all know we could be.

When Coach Solich decides to ride off in the sunset, whether that be this year or next, I would argue for getting a proven coach who may have been fired (Al Golden etc) because at least he might stick around and have some bona fides to bring in recruits. Otherwise, if we go with some young gun, he will be out the door in less than four.

I do think it's telling that the recent upgrades infrastructure-wise to the football program have been built with private funding, the IPF, the renovated locker room and the proposed Academic Center. That pretty much tells me the importance or emphasis the Administration's putting towards the football program.
