With the team now bowl eligible and, with 7 wins, almost certainly going to a bowl, it is probably safe to say Solich is not going anywhere after this season (nor do I feel he should). The financial cost of such a step has already been outlined and there is not an outcry from the fans for such a move. Additionally, any inkling that he was forced out after taking the team to a bowl 6 of the past 7 years would not bode well in the search for our next coach.

That said, should anything be read into the following:

Solich was hired prior to the 2005 season. He was given a 5 year contract.

Prior to the 2008 season (with 2 seasons left on his contract), his contract was extended through the 2013 season.

Prior to the 2012 season (with 2 seasons left on his contract), his contract was extended through the 2016 season.

To stay in that cycle, his contract would have been extended prior to this season. It does not appear to have been addressed.

He will be 72 in September.

To me (and I could be completely wrong), it sounds like there will be an announcement before next season declaring not an extension, but Frank's retirement after the 2016 season. In doing so, he gets a farewell season (I also see us naming Solich Field at Pedan Stadium), we get solid time to select a coach, and with AJ entering his senior season and Brown and Irons entering their junior years (plus the maturation of the young defenders), a new coach is walking into a nicely stocked team.

To me, that appears to be the answer to the Solich Question.

On the surface, yes 8-4 would be great. And yes, in reality, at the start of the year I didn't think we'd be much better than 8-4 or 9-3.

But if you pull back the covers.....

49-14
42-17
62-24

Those still are smelly losses. And you can't ignore the past 3 years that go along with those.

That's only reason....ONLY reason why I'm not two thumbs up on a possible 8-4.

(This is all assuming we beat NIU which is not going to easy like Kent/Ball)

Again...if our ceiling is 8-4 every year beating the Kents, Akrons, EMUs, Miamis of the MAC and getting torched by the others....just let me know and I'll temper expectations.

Call me greedy...but I'd like to be playing meaningful football in November with a chance at championships.

Indeed. 2017 will either be Solich's best team, or a great starting team for a successor. That's why I have expected 2017 to be Solich's final team, so he can leave on top.

To stay through the 2017 season Solich would need a 1 year contract extension which would probably need to be announced prior to the 2016 season. Would a 2 year lame duck period cause problems with our recruiting efforts and leave the new coach with rebuilding more than reloading?

I suspect he'll get a multiyear extension come January. Whether he'll serve out the full time of the extension will be anyone's guess.

I think it would be STUNNING if Ohio finishes 9-4 after that 3 game debacle! Finishing the year on a 4 game winning streak, which would include a road win against Northern Illinois and a bowl victory was the last thing I envisioned after the loss to BGSU.

It would indeed be a great come back and something to build on.

The big question will be at what price? We can't afford to keep driving up the cost of salaries for no reason.

They should not be offered an extension unless we make progress in games against top five MACC competition and they show they can put an offensive combination on the field that can win the MACC. If we have bad QB play next year, there should be no extension. We will in fact be regressing at that point. Our defense will lose a lot after this year. We lose four of our top cb's, we lose our safeties, but they did not play well and we lose JJ. The coaches need to put a good product on the field next year or we will have to buy out years later.

The school has to do what is best for the program. Do you continue to pay a middle of the staff a top three salary, which makes it hard for you to make a change later or do you demand direction. I would make the coaches show me the program is on the rise before I extend them, because if they regress, I have to buy them out and pay a new administration more. As far as raise them later, for what beating lower tier MACC teams, not going to happen.

Quit while you're behind. Gosh, you keep digging a deeper hole with your posts that seem to be rather uninformed drivel. Yeah, Frank is reading your posts and making changes based on such. LOL.

IMHO, the smart money, i.e. contracts, should be tied to performance and a little less to salary. This way coaches are more motivated like workers in the private sector, and at the same time you keep your basic costs down. Winning always increases revenue and therefor it makes paying the bonus' easier.

I'm pretty sure he would reject an offer for extension and will retire at the end of this season because the Message Board said that it is the right thing for him to do. He is likely not able to sleep right now because he didn't decide to resign after the BUGS game.

Quit digging a hole by telling the truth. Kevin McHale just got fired and he is a great coach, You have to produce you can't be the second highest paid coach in the MAC and get a raise for finishing 5th, you have to produce. Mediocrity is not the norm. Let's go Cats

Ohio made the cover on that issue? I don't recall that. I don't think Ohio's been on the SI cover since Walter Luckett.

Came across my copies today, one of which I had Frank sign. The cover says "Brooklyn Rising" and features Deron Williams dribbling in front of a graffiti wall. No mention of OHIO or Frank at all on that cover. OHIO feature started on page 50. Just to close the loop.

Which BUGS game is that? The 62-24 loss from this season? The 31-13 loss from 2014? Or the 49-0 loss from 2013?

If I were Frank, those would keep me up at night.

Well Brooklyn is 2-10 and next to last in the east of the Association, so I'd say that qualifies.

Here is a nice read, BTW, in case you want a little background on how Boise got where they are. http://www.si.com/more-sports/2010/09/06/boise-state

With people freaking the eff out because the President was placed in temporary housing due to 29 Park having been infested with bats for over a decade, and after the First Lady broke her foot trying to flee from one of the pests, can you imagine how warmly the University community would embrace a $100MM expansion project for Peden?

Touche, but I was referencing the Board demanding his resignation, not the BUGS result keeping him up. I am certain the results made it difficult for him to sleep.

For $100MM you do not get an "expansion" of Peden, you get a leveling followed by a completely new stadium. I think you could expand the existing facility to 40,000 for a lot less than that figure.
