OK, Hilliard is a walkon, which makes sense, given that Ohio can't have any left. Perhaps someone can explain what this means?

There was an issue with his paperwork way back in February too, wasn't there? He committed but couldn't officially commit until several weeks later or something like that.

If you owe the university money, they can place a hold on things. For example, if you have unpaid parking tickets upon your graduation they will place a hold on giving you a diploma.

I'm okay with a RB rotation of sorts. But I'm also in the camp that holds that some RBs need multiple reps to reach peak performance. If one of Ohio's RBs is emerging as more effective than the others, I hope he gets the majority of carries. That hope doesn't preclude change-of-pace backs getting carries but not so many that the lead back loses his growing feel for the game.

Makes sense.

When a running back is gaining yardage consistently he's going to get more carries. I checked the stats for the last decade, and when a running back has averaged 4.9 yards a carry or better, they have averaged between 16 and 24.5 carries a game:
2005 - McRae 5.5 yds/carry, 19 carries a game
2011 - Harden 5.3 /carry, 16 carries a game
2012 - Blankenship 5.1 /carry, 24 carries a game
2014 - OUellette 4.9/carry, 16 carries a game
2007 - McRae 4.9/carry, 24.5 carries a game
2006 - McRae 4.9/carry, 18 carries a game

When they have averged less than that, they got a lot less carries:
2013 - Blankenship 4.5/carry, 16 carries a game
2008 - Garrett 4.5/carry, 10 carries a game
2009 - Garrett 4.2/carry, 12 carries a game
2010 - Davidson 3.9/carry, 12 carries a game

My feeling is that the load that Blankenship carried in 2012, and that McRae carried in 2007, both at 24 carries a game, was too heavy, and it took a toll on them over the year. If AJ can average 4.9 a carry again, and I think he can, then I think a reasonable number would be in the 16-19 carry a game range. If they are going to run the ball 30-35 times, that leaves 10-15 carries to be split among the others.

Lots of factors come into play. However, Ohio likes balance. 2011/58% run, 2012/59% run, 2013/52% run, 2014/56% run. 2011 carries; Harden 187, Tettleton 166, Boykin 104 & Blankenship 93. 2012 carries; Blankenship 312, Tettleton 120, Boykin 74 & Patterson 34. 2013 Tettleton netted 24 yds on 43 carries, 0.6 yds/per. Vick netted 67 on 30 for 2.2 yds/c. 2014 Vick netted 390 with a 4.8 avg/c. Oullette netted 785 with a 4.9 avg. 2015 Oullette & Vick build on 2014 and this season will be special.

Hilliard never earned a scholarship and is leaving the program.

I'm not surprised about this one bit. Going back to my original post that started this thread, I never understood his transfer here in the first place. RB was probably "the" position Ohio is deepest and most established at on the entire team. Makes me wonder if he even did any research to see who was already here at RB before deciding to come to OU. Further, I heard that even after spring he was buried on the depth chart.

I remember the recent NIU game when Ouelette was the only healthy back and did all the heavy lifting.

I think this tells us something about Ohio's situation at RB. Many of the years of the last decade I suspect Hilliard would have quickly earned a scholarship, and perhaps the starting job. He was, after all, a 3-star recruit, and highly sought after. Yet, I think that OUellette, Brown, and Irons, none of whom were highly ranked, should all have been 3 star recruits or better. As a result, Hilliard wasn't able to beat any of them out, so he wasn't going to get a scholarship. This is the same problem Hardy had. Hardy, however, instead of leaving, elected to move to Safety, where I hope he can earn some playing time and help the team.

You mentioned the very reason why with your very own words: "the only healthy back." You could have 10 RB's but if only 1 is healthy, then you have 1 RB. "When healthy," Ohio has a stable of RB's and the unit is arguably the best in the MAC right now. There's a nice mix of power, speed and versatility with those guys. Hilliard wasn't part of the equation last year and found himself buried behind these guys when spring wrapped up. Smart move on his part to leave and look for a spot elsewhere.
