I saw this article on another school, and while it doesn't apply directly to Ohio, it gives an idea how the net costs (after revenues) vary by sport:
http://tinyurl.com/kkxgcw2

M Football +$36.3m
M Basketball +$2.1m
W Volleyball +$.6m
W Sand Volleyball -$.1m
W Rifle -$.3m
W Golf -$.5m
W Bowling -$.5m
M Golf -$.5m
W Tennis -$.6m
M Tennis -$.6m
M Gymnastics -$.7m
M Baseball -$.7m
M Wrestling -$1.1m
W Swimming -$1.1m
W Gymnastics -$1.1m
W Soccer -$1.2m
W Softball -$1.4m
M Cross Country -$1.6m
W Cross Country -$1.7m
W Basketball -$2.5m

Does anyone have a similar report for Ohio? Obviously they don't show that kind of profit for football or basketball, and probably a loss for both, but a report like this would help to answer the question of what portion of those student fees is going to support football, and what portion to other sports.

That is interesting to see how much just two sports carry the load of revenue for all of the other sports. I assume it's a similar model at almost every D1 school.

But we're talking Nebraska who has B1G Network revenues. Is there a MAC school where football even makes a profit to "carry the load"?

My thought is that Ohio's numbers are probably similar, but with somewhat smaller losses (since Nebraska is presumably more extravagant), towards the bottom of that list, but very different at the top. I suspect that Ohio football shows a loss, but not huge, and that Ohio Basketball does the same.

Part of the reason for posting that list was to show that clarity is possible. I think that a lot of people would have a better idea of where the money goes, and discussions would be more accurate, if Ohio would publish a similar list.

I agree that the clarity would be good in terms of everyone know the facts. The problem could be that some sports are such huge money losers, that they don't want to share that. I have to believe that most years, mens basketball makes a little bit, while most other sports lose quite a bit.

But how is OHIO similar when we are so heavily subsidized? I see that as an apples to oranges thing.

Does it matter whether a sport like Cross Country is subsidized by football (as above), or by fees (Ohio)? Either way, all the minor sports are heavily subsidized.

As I said above, the sports at the top of the list would be very different at Ohio, but the ones nearer to the bottom are probably not that much different, except that with all their football revenue, Nebraska may spend more lavishly even on minor sports.

In any case, transparency is possible. There is no reason Ohio couldn't release similar numbers, and those numbers would answer a lot of questions.

Yes, there is a difference in a sport being subsidized by earned income from real revenue, v. being subsidized by a mandatory fee that all people must contribute. The funny thing here, is how many people support this structure to support athletics but despise this structure when applied to the government and social programs.

The sports at the bottom of the list all have significant losses, whether at Nebraska, Ohio, or anywhere else and we know that. What we don't know is how much loss can be attributed to each. The other thing we don't know is, at Ohio, how much loss, if any, can be attributed to the sports at the top of the list, such as Football, Basketball, and Volleyball. How can you debate whether eliminating a sport would save money if you don't know what the revenues and expenses for that sport are?

I also wonder what they are counting as expenses. Scholarships for each athlete? That -$2.5M for women's basketball is quite the albatross. If there were 20 players/coaches on that team, it would come out to $125,000 spent per person.

It's hard to know, showing that even this much transparency doesn't answer all questions. My guess is that the Men's and Women's basketball expenses are on the high side because they just built a new Arena last year, and I'd guess that there is a high facilities costs involved.

I doubt that an arena would be included in a sports cost! That would be offset in a university capital improvement.

The University had a center for basketball that was built in 1976, and which seated 13,595 called the Bob Devaney Center. The city wanted to build a new arena, so they built an expensive new center called Pinnacle Arena which seats 15,147. The University now leases Pinnacle Arena for men's and women's basketball games, and it is used by the city for a variety of other purposes the rest of the time. The Bob Devaney Center is still used for gymnastics, swimming, and volleyball, among other things.

Since they lease the Arena, I presume the expenses for the lease show up in the annual costs instead of in the capital expenses.

Thi is not related, but being a visitor did not want to create a new thread. Especially your mascot maybe common around your parts.

I've never seen one live but a neighbor to this picture of a Bobcat in our area and wanted to share it.

But first will have to figure out how to attach an image.

Yes, Athol, MA The economic heart of the North Quabbin Region. To our south is where Boston flood 4 towns for there water supply, Quabbin Reservoir. One of those towns,Dana was home to Daniel Shay of the Shay's Rebellion. It it was not poor farmers as the history books say, but towns went with the prominent leaders/families of the local towns.
