And this reminds me of walking out of the stadium at Penn State after beating the Nittany Lions on a very emotional day for them. I was stopped in the parking lot by many PSU fans who congratulated me (like I did something) on how well OUr team played, wished us luck the rest of the season, and in many cases offered me a beer at their tailgate. It happened so often, when I got to the tailgate of Penn State people I know, I asked one of them if they are always this way or if it was the result of the "problem" they were trying to recover from. He said something like this, "Of course we have a few fans who are jerks, but a vast majority of us get along with all the other team's fans except for one. Those fans from Ohio State are real a**holes."

Game, set, match.

My experience at Penn State was exactly like this. We were invited to have beers at multiple tailgates before and after the game. But when we assured our hosts that in no way did we root for/like tOSU, we were even more appreciated...

I have been coming onto this message board for many years and I have posted very few times but felt that I had to comment on this topic. I am a very proud alumni of Ohio University. I also played football while attending Ohio. I was recruited by Knorr and his staff and finished my career under Solich. I am also born and raised in Columbus and I currently live there. I do not have an issue with Urban Meyer or any of the current players on Ohio State's roster and I believe most non-Ohio State fans don't have an issue with them either. The issue that most people have with Ohio State is with their fan base. And this doesn't pertain to every single OSU fan only some of them. A lot of Ohio State fans are just fine. Those fans were born and raised in Central Ohio or they graduated from OSU or they currently live there. Those fans cheer for there team every Saturday, they are knowledgable about college football and the game of football in general. These fans are ones I enjoy being around during OSU games and are fun to have a conversation with about college football. They are also respectful of other colleges and universities and their fans. The OSU fans I have a problem with are the ones who are arrogant, disrespectful, and unreasonable. These OSU fans have no idea about college football and only know that OSU is the best, everyone else sucks and everyone who roots for another college football team is wrong. The following conversation is one I have with OSU fans quite frequently and it kills me every time, it goes like this:

OSU Fan: "O your from Columbus, are you an OSU fan?"
Myself: "Ya I sure I root for the Buckeyes, I'm not really a diehard fan though. If OSU wins then that's great, but if they lose I don't really lose much sleep over it."
OSU Fan: "Well who do you root for then, do you have another team?"
Myself: "Yes, I root for Ohio University."

You should see the look I get from these types of OSU fans when I say this to them. They look at me like I'm kidding around or I have a 3rd eye growing out of my forehead. HOW CAN YOU LIVE IN COLUMBUS AND NOT LIVE AND DIE WITH THE BUCKEYES!!! These OSU fans cannot fathom the idea of living in Columbus and not being a diehard OSU fan. According to them it should probably be crime. I was at both OSU vs. Ohio football games that took place during the 2000's (one of which Ohio had a 14-12 lead w/ 7:00 minutes left in the 4th quarter which no OSU fan remembers). I could not tell you how many times some 45 year old man who was 5 ft 8in tall and 350 lbs came up to me to talk crap because I was wearing an Ohio University shirt. I'm 6'4 and have an athletic build and this out of shape, overweight man thinks he's better than me because he has on scarlet and grey and I have on green and white???

Is it okay to root for OSU? I think it is. Is it okay to root for OSU and Ohio, I think so too. But it depends on how you do it. Do it with class because a lot of OSU fans are classless. They think they are better than you because they are OSU fans and you root for someone else. I know OSU just won a national championship and that makes them the best team in college football. However, success can make people act one of two ways. They can be humble about it or they can be arrogant. Unfortunately too many OSU fans are arrogant and thats why people hate on Ohio State.

hope you make it a habit of commenting here, your insight and perspective is appreciated. Welcome.

Go read Blue and White Illustrated (BWI) and read some of the "Paterno family was the real victim" and "No screaming = No rape" comments coming from that PSU crew and tell me again about the great PSU fans.

Shocking to see such positive comments about that fan base. I have been to many college football stadiums. I read message boards from programs around the country.

PSU fans (the bad segment) aren't just trashy, obnoxious and arrogant. They are borderline evil.

Some things transcend negative comments and ridiculous bravado.

As for the topic of this thread, cheer for whatever program you enjoy. It's a personal decision. If you grew up in Ohio, went to Ohio University but cheer for UTEP for some random reason, good for you.

I will say this, however. An OSU fan, who went to Ohio, that I know began to follow Ohio sports. Once he realized he was not welcome among the core fan base because of his OSU fanaticism, he abandoned all attempts at following Ohio sports, including purchase memorabilia, tickets, etc. It may be "good riddance" but if this happens somewhat frequently, it costs Ohio money.

I stand by my comments within the context they were made. I was reflecting on the on-going attitude of a fan base, not the inexcusable acts of a pedophile and those who defend the system that allowed it to happen. Much of the angst on the PSU site is about defending Joe Pa much the same as the A&M fans defended Woody “for all the good he had done” when he slugged the Clemson player. I’m not equating these two acts, but all I know is that Woody definitely committed his act of disgrace. All I was referencing is how I was treated wearing the “enemy’ colors at PSU as opposed to the crap I put up with when I went to the Horsesh** and how it amplified as OUr team continued to lead the game into the 4th quarter. Didn’t want to go into any more detail about my PSU experience but I will now since someone else on the Board brought it up. The fans were not perfect at Happy Valley. I was confronted by one drunk student and you know what happened? Another one pulled him away, told him if wasn’t cool and apologized to me.

Aww, poor fella, did he get his feelings hurt? I'm sorry to hear that an Ohio alum felt uncomfortable being a full time Ohio State fan who wanted to root for his alma mater when it was convenient for him. Probably the type of guy who talks about OSU sports all the time around his friends and coworkers but when Ohio beats Penn State or makes it to the Sweet 16 suddenly he's telling everybody "I went to school there!" He was never a fan to begin with, he won't be missed.

You clearly weren't in Happy Valley for the Bobcats' win like many of us were. Without exception, my wife and I were treated graciously before and after the game. This stands in shocking and stark contrast to my two visits to Columbus while wearing "enemy" colors. The 2008 game was particularly nasty, as Ohio led most of the way and the natives got very restless. You can extrapolate whatever you like from reading message boards, but I've actually been to a lot of arenas and stadiums as a visiting fan and I've never encountered a more boorish, arrogant and foul fan base than Ohio State's.

It's qualitatively different. I've been to many away venues and the way the fans treat you as an inferior species is at level all its own. It's not all the fans by any means, but a significant number. Some of my proudest Bobcat moments were being in St. John Arena twice when OHIO beat Ohio State. Many of the home team fans looked shell shocked after those defeats -- particularly the first one back in the Snyder Era.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. I think you're going to run in to jackass fans anywhere you go. The reason it seems like it's significantly more at OSU is because they have more fans, therefore, they'll have more jackasses.

I've also never heard an OSU fan call themselves "Ohio"..I'm sure it happens, but in my 30 years, I've never heard it... They only thing I've heard are OU fans making it an issue by wearing shirts that say "The Real OHIO."

+1

Your typical BA Buckeyes have often asked in the chat when they are getting ripped "don't you like our money?"

My response has always been "absolutely." I'll take their money and support to further this program. Same goes for Walmart fans who didn't go to the school. If we can get them hooked on OHIO and buying gear/supporting the program, GREAT.

That said, if you expect me to treat a rival institution nice just to keep the declining segment of our own alumni base with mixed up priorities appeased, you don't get it.
Some seem to hope for a day where Ohio and Ohio State are merged under one banner and name. That is disgraceful.

I too was at both OSU games. I can honestly say that I didn't have any hostility sent my way (except for the two old ladies behind me who were angry that I would stand during "Stand up and Cheer")
The reason that I didn't experience any hostility is because they flat out didn't care enough about us to send any hate my way. Most OSU fans honestly don't even realize that we are actually in the same division as them! (yes I know that they are on a different planet financially then we are, but that doesn't change the fact that we are both FBS!) EVERYONE I came across was sooooo incredibly condescending towards us. It was almost an attitude of "It's so cute that you would actually come up here and try to play against us! I hope no one on your team gets hurt!" That is what I experienced. I would have rather had the hate!

Agreed, I really hate the condescension (which will now be worse given that they're national champions) but their fans shouldn't feel that way in hoops after Ohio hung very tough with them in last year's game. I loved Clark Kellogg being shown on TV in OSU's arena wearing OHIO gear cheering on Nick! That was awesome!

I mean...yeah..I've heard that, but it doesn't bother me. It's a cheer.. I'm talking about people claiming that their school is OHIO..Now..I've heard people from other areas refer to them as OHIO, but not people from Ohio State.

I will never forget the 2008 game. During the game, I was browsing an OSU forum as I listened to the game on the radio. After T3 was lost for the season with a broken collarbone, Boo came in and was playing respectably well, and had Ohio ahead. Several OSU fans kept saying that OSU needed to injure Boo, and get him out of the game. Not one person stepped up and said "that's just wrong".

I know there are bad apples in every fanbase, but usually there are some good ones around to keep them in line.

Especially after the incredibly cheap shot that removed T3 from the game and somehow went unflagged. not only was it late, but it was pretty descpicable the way he was thrown down on his shoulder.

From the PSU crew today on BWI:

Ohio State continues to win by cheating, while Penn State does everything the right way, and we are told that we are the ones with the "culture" problem. All because of a bunch of greedy little liars - excuse me, "victims."

Sodomizing children in a shower and covering it up is the "right" way? I'd rather everyone sell their gold plated charms and a booster pay every kid $10K, regardless of school, than be associated with that. No one is hurt by a tattoo or a selling of merchandise. Lives were forever altered at PSU!

And while that one may be a little over the top, the general sentiment is shared by the majority of their alumni. They actually have alumni elections for a portion of their board, and since the scandal, every alumni-elected trustee has been a Paterno Truther including one lunatic who dresses up as Paterno in tribute and demands that he be reinstated as Head Coach for a day so he can be retired with Honor.

I was at the 2008 OHIO vs OSU game. I was supporting the bobcats. No one said or did anything rude to me during the game and I was sitting 2nd row next to a bunch of die hard OSU fans. There will always be some bad apple in a bunch (and there are some bad OHIO fans too) but you shouldn't judge a fan base on a few fans. With that said go OHIO!!! and go BGSU, Kent St, Akron, OSU, Toledo and all the other colleges in the great state of Ohio. Except Miami, they suck!

Thanks for shedding some light on this... aside from the osu lawsuit and the century of arrogance in attempting to take our name, own our name and undermine us at every opportunity (but, yeah, get over it ) , there are other reasons to hate osu, but I do blame many of our own alumni. Lots of folks SAY they are Bobcats first, but what do their actions say?

How much money did you spend on buckeye shit this year? how many times did you post crap about the latest osu game? how big a a pimp are you all the time about ohio state?

And on the other end? Did you ever take any of that money and give to the OHIO Bobcat club? When did you get your last OHIO shirt or sweatshirt? When was your last visit to Athens? Did you buy season tickets to OHIO football and attend at least three games, which you can do for the same cost as one osu game?

No, OHIO won't ever win a national championship. I'm fine with that. I also prefer that our school never become one that has a sports "culture" because that minimizes what a great place it is altogether. But it would be nice to just see what our potential is, if we didn't have so many weak-minded fools who buy everything they sell in cowtown. Grow up and be your own person. Grow some balls.

This sums it up for me. In theory, you can be a duel fan. But about 95% of the time, it's the situation DFC describes...They "put Ohio first"...except not really anything close to that.

Yeah, but doesn't that happen at Browns games too? And Steeler games? I think most big time programs have obnoxious, passionate fans that belittle the opposing team's fans. . . .

You've never heard someone yell OH...IO in reference to State?

I mean...yeah..I've heard that, but it doesn't bother me. It's a cheer.. I'm talking about people claiming that their school is OHIO..Now..I've heard people from other areas refer to them as OHIO, but not people from Ohio State.

Like so many other fans in the Columbus area now, you are also apparently oblivious to literally thousands of T shirts, hoodies and caps that say simply "Ohio". By using the form of script Ohio, they are technically sidestepping the trademark agreement, so fine. They will have to continue to listen to me say "Go Bobcats" at every appropriate opportunity, however, and hopefully go away scratching their clueless heads.

That's the major problem . . . these Walmart fans are clueless totally. I was "way down in Alabamy" when UA lost to O$U, and I was wearing my OHIO cap (Arched OHIO in white on a green cap). Almost everyone I ran into knew that it was "Oho University" and not the football factory in Cowtown. Some did assume, however, that I would also be a big A&M fan as well. The docent at the Hank Aaron boyhood home in Mobile said that "other team from Ohio really took it too us." He didn't immediately assume that would be a big A&M. I think with many states having in-state rivals (like Alabama-Auburn) there's often not an automatic assumption in other part of the country that being from the Buckeye state means you are a supporter of the Cowtown team. It's only in parts of Ohio that you run into that. That type of sentiment is least pronounced in southwestern OHIO, but it is present to some extent all over the state, which is sad.

As an aside, I overheard a woman in a restaurant in Alabamy talking about the A&M-UA-T game and saying something to the effect that we have been saying so long how much superior the SEC is to every other conference and now, "We may just have to keep our mouths shut." I had to laugh over that one.
