I really think if the Big 12 had a championship game, the winner of that game would have gotten the 4th playoff spot. The "co-champions" thing (really, is there no head-to-head tiebreaker?) gave the committee an "out" for not selecting either.

Bull$h1+. The committee took an out. We all know that the only reason TCU is out is because they are TCU. If Texas played the same schedule with the same results and won their last game 52-3, do you think there's a chance in hell they drop out? Quit making excuses for the new version of a corrupt system. And believe me, I've no interest in defending TCU or any religious Texans for that matter.

The last thing I am is an OSU honk but I think the committee got it right in putting OSU in the Top 4. I watched the OSU-Wisconsin game (and my mom's a Wisconsin alum so I was really pulling for the Badgers) and I was thinking to myself, how does one keep that team OUT of the bowl championship? The only reason OSU wasn't the #4 ranked team after they beat Michigan the week before was because the committee was afraid to put OSU that high knowing JT Barrett was done for the season-had Barrett not gotten injured there's no doubt OSU would've been #4 going into the Big 10 championship game. I hate OSU but even the eye test tells me they're better than TCU and Baylor right now.

And that's another thing-I don't understand all the gnashing of teeth for TCU. They shouldn't have been ranked that high to begin with. Baylor actually beat TCU this year so if anyone had the right to complain its Baylor. The mistake the committee made was leapfrogging TCU into the top 3 two weeks ago.

But I definitely do agree that the system's corrupt, but it's been corrupt for a very long time.

How many years do we have to wait to get to a 12 (byes for top 4 seeds) or 16 team playoff? 8 Team playoff can't be that far off.

16 would be perfect. 10 AQs, 6 at large. But I don't ever expect to see that in my lifetime.

My guess is that's also because of a non-objective factor -- a sleazy QB -- who has managed to just kind of slide through the justice system. I know they are citing the closeness of many of their victories and that some of them have been fourth quarter come from behind victories. But, again, that strikes me as a pretext not a reason. If it was Alabama that was doing that, it would probably be credited to them as a sign of resilience, grit and determination -- perhaps even relentlessness! ;-) They'd get high marks for being undefeated and escaping in close games. Ladies and gentlemen, I think we are dealing with a rigged system here. Zero credibility with me.

College football was the most fun for me back in the late 60s and 70s when there was a high level of ambiguity.

Basically I think its because it didn't matter. Being ranked #1 or #4 in the final poll basically makes no difference: you're in the 2-game playoff. By the same token, under the BCS format, being ranked #1 or #2 in the final ranking made no difference. Any ranking before that final week is meaningless (hype aside), particularly in a year when the rankers (i.e. the playoff committee) said repeatedly that their rankings each week were going to be a blank slate, not constrained by the previous week's ranking. Ultimately, there was no scenario in which an undefeated, defending, national champion who hasn't lost since 2012 was going to be left out of the playoff.

What system would you like to see implemented?

There is no answer to this and that's what is so frustrating. People just won't let it go. Obviously, any form of tournament is out (Urban Meyer himself is already complaining about the extra game this year); a computer driven poll is out; vanity polls are out (this committee and everything that preceded the BCS).

Ask yourself, Why isn't a conference championship followed by a showcase, bowl trip enough (anymore)?

The only answer I have: A large number of football fans can't live with ambiguity and ESPN is only to happy to feed the argument with more football programming.

Pfft. Urban should ask himself why they went from 11 games to 12 in the regular season some time ago. Go back to 11 and there's your week back.

I don't think it's the fans so much as it is the media and the conferences. The fans already bitch about too many trips and not enough time to get decent airfares, hotels, etc. Media, particularly ESPN, don't like the ambiguity. They feel an overwhelming need to crown somebody "champion." And for ESPN it's the added revenue from the extra game. The conferences want that added cash too, especially if one of them can have both teams playing for the title.

If there's a better alternative for ambiguity, I would have conference championships on Thanksgiving weekend; the regular season for conferences without divisions would also end that weekend. The playoffs (either 4 or 8 team) would then start at campus sites in the first week in December if there are 4 teams (first two weeks if 8 teams). Then the money New Years bowls could host the national championship on a rotating basis. Fewer trips for fans of the higher seeds at least, and being a top seed would mean something by having a home field advantage.

We will get by.

I just think of Frank Costanza trying to say Del Boca Vista any time I hear about this bowl game.
