I completely agree with this. But I'd expand it to "every aspect of the bowl game is meaningless."

Of course, the only bowl projection that means anything is the one on 12/7. But just for fun, CFN Scout has us playing Mich in Detroit. http://cfn.scout.com/2/1478672.html

Hoke (or whoever is coaching that game for Mich) would get the opportunity to make his players think they're playing O$Who again.

If Michigan is playing us in Detroit, Hoke is unemployed and we're opposing an interim coach of sorts.

Today, USATODAY had us in the Camelia against...I can't remember who!?!

And, I have my doubts we can beat NIU so it's gonna come down to winning at Miami. We better not let them rain/snow on our parade.

Brett McMurphy at ESPN doesn't have us (or Akron, for that matter) in any bowl. He does have Michigan, Illinois, and South Carolina in bowls though.

Michigan needs to win one from a decent Maryland team or shock osu to be eligible. Possible, but not probable.

Illinois needs to win 2 from Penn State, Iowa, and Northwestern. Doubtful.

South Carolina needs to win 2 from Florida (50-50), So. Alabama (probable), and Clemson (unlikely, but it's a rivalry game so who knows).

I would bet that at least one of those three will not be eligible.

Cincinnati is now bowl eligible with a win over ECU in the cold last night. The AAC now has 3/6 teams in. UCF, Houston and Temple are on the fringe with five wins each.

I count 78 teams that are either in or need to win no more than half their remaining games to get in. That doesn't include Ga Southern and Appy St, who both are in transition years and would need a waiver to go to a bowl. And if Arkansas holds on vs LSU, they go to 5-5. With 76 spots, it's looking more like 7-5 would be needed for Ohio to even be considered for an unfilled bowl slot.

South Carolina and Virgina Tech wins hurt us bad. The final nail in the coffin could be an Oregon St win. Then we would need some REAL help to get in at 6-6. Winning at Miami is no gimme anyway.

Northwestern's upset of Notre Dame hurts too. Our best chance in right now is probably for either the ACC or B1G to fail to fill their quota for the new bowl in Detroit.

Update: games to pay special attention to
1. Any game FSU or osu pays. If either (or, ideally, both) wind up in the playoff, it will open an extra spot for the ACC or B1G via the access bowls (possibly 2).
2. UNC still has to beat either Duke (which is in a fight for the division title) and NC State.
3. Pitt has to beat both Syracuse and Miami.
4. Virginia has to beat both Miami and VaTech.
5. VaTech has to beat either Wake or Virginia.
-->VaTech probably gets eligible, Pitt ad UVa probably don't. So it comes down to UNC in the ACC. Go Blue Devils, and Go Wolfpack.

6. Michigan has to beat either Maryland or osu.
7. Northwestern has to beat both Purdue and Illinois.
8. Illinois has to beat both Penn State and Northwestern.
-->Michigan is not likely to win either of its last 2, and only one from Illinois and Northwestern can be eligible since they still play each other. Root for Penn State over Illinois, and Illinois over Northwestern, to eliminate both.

I now 61 teams likely to get 7 wins.

South Alabama
Rutgers
North Carolina State
South Carolina
Florida
Texas
California
Appalachian State
Middle Tennessee
Temple
San Diego State
Texas State
Arkansas
Ohio
Alabama-Birmingham
Western Kentucky
North Carolina
Stanford
Navy
Michigan

This is the list of teams where there most probable record is 6-6. That adds up to 81 but it is more likely for a team to fall off this list than to one of the 5-7s to get on it so I get 80 now as the most probable number of eligible teams with 81 the next most likely. I still get Oregon State and Northwestern at 5-7 being a little more likely than 6-6.

Appalachian State and Georgia Southern are not eligible for a bowl this year because they are in their FBS transition.

UTEP becomes bowl eligible for the first time since 2010. C-USA needs one more team to fill their allotment.

Given our bowl stumble last year (watch the 4th qtr crumble) and our so-impressive wins this year (idaho, eku, kents, akron, beefs), I'm sure that bowl committees everywhere are fired up for the almost 100 Ohio fans who'd attend any bowl.

I've said it once and I'll keep saying it: 6-6 means we'll go bowling. I'd bet the farm on it.

This isn't 2012. The MAC now has 5 guaranteed tie-ins and 3 back up bowls. All we need is one back-up slot to open and we'd be in. Akron's eligibility is irrelevant - we would beat them in any category bowls might consider (TV ratings, attendance, alumni base, etc)...not to mention we beat them head-to-head.

This talk is irrelevant. We need 6 wins to be in the discussion and we don't have them as of this morning.

True, but Frank owns Miami, just like he did Temple. I feel very good about our chances. Go OHIO!

We're at 60 teams in with 19 needing to win half or fewer of their remaining games. That's 79 teams for 76 slots. Most of the 19 teams have at least one patsy at home and should bet in, but many don't. Here are the teams/games that could decide who gets in:

Arky -- they're 5-5 but have ranked teams Ole Miss & Mizzou to finish the season.

Okla St -- also 5-5 with ranked teams Baylor & Okla.

UAB -- they'll likely be 5-6 after hosting T'erd this week, so they'll probably need to win at Southern Miss (3-8) next week.

Stanford/Cal -- each is 5-5 and they play each other this week. The winner is bowl eligible; the loser has a tough row; Stanford has UCLA, Cal has BYU.

Wash (6-5)-Oregon St. (5-5) -- they play this week and the winner is bowl eligible (Wash plays 13 games, so they need 7 wins); Wash wraps up with Wash St (3-7) while Oregon St has Oregon.

Maryland-Mich -- if Mich (5-5) doesn't win this week, they likely won't be bowl eligible (@O$U next week).

Beating a dead horse...but I would bet the farm, house, wife and kids we go bowling at 6-6. As sure of a bet as there is...do the math.
