How many schollie are available for class of 2018?

With nothing unforeseen that is. Now, the reason I ask.

In light of the Adidas scandal and top players de-committing from big name schools, other schools on the next rung that are scandal free would love to snare a couple of 5 star recruits. But for some, that would mean going over the limit and having to tell the last couple of guys on the end of the bench "see ya" even though they might be great guys and on the dean's list and can really play some ball.

So, those kids buried on the roster at (name of ACC/SEC/etc school here) get the hint and go to where they will get some playing time while still on track to graduate. And why not Athens Ohio for their next stop? Heck of a lot more scenic than Murfreesboro TN or Bowling Green KY. Kermit Davis and Stansbury can't get all the transfers.

We lose Mickle and Laster and I believe we saved Jaaron's scholly in case Tone was approved. We have two new bigs with verbals. That means we only have one scholarship left. I hope we can find a wing between 6-4 and 6-8 who can handle the ball and shoot the rock. I would absolutely love someone who has Culver's athleticism and quickness and Gollon's shooting touch in one guy. I think we're set at point with Butler and Kirk for years. I think Spring will be a solid post and Gareri and Vander Plas will be solid big men/wings. But having Block be our only true 3-man worries me.

Maybe as the dominoes fall in the scenario from the original post, a really good wing player becomes available? But Saul would have to be ready to hit the ground running on it because the other schools will be like vultures circling. "Tweeners" weren't the hottest item at one time, but it seems like when D. Wade was at Marquette and OJ Mayo at USC, that all changed.

We may be able to land a high powered recruit for this year as they leave schools like Louisville.

There will be much more fallout. Larry Hughes was a top 5 recruit and signed with Saint Louis. Most teams are out of scholarships, Ohio could possibly step in and land a big fish. Make an offer and see what happens and don't be so scared. We got a PG that turned down 18 schools including Arkansas.

Larry Hughes was from St. Louis. The Billikens were members of CUSA, which at that time had some name brand schools, like Cincinnati, Louisville, Marquette and most members were located in major metropolitan areas. Multiple NCAA tourney bids...

Nobody's scared, far from it. But I don't want my coaching staff wasting too much time chasing rainbows.

I agree, evaluate and make an offer if the player fits. I imagine other heads will be rolling soon. You are right about Larry Hughes, he had a sick brother as well.

I still contend that a domino ripple effect could lead to a few good players hitting the "open market" -

Hypothetical example:
Player de-commits from big-name school caught in shoe scandal and is now more interested in GaTech or Wake or Vandy due to cleaner reputation both on the court and in the classroom. Hypothetically, Tech or Wake or Vandy or whoever already has a great recruiting class incoming, but who can turn down a 5star stud player if he is a solid citizen and good student too? So, the school that is now suddenly thrust into the role of front-runner for the kid must tell Joe-nice-guy at the end of the bench he needs to talk to Rick Byrd at Belmont or Saul Phillips at Ohio or the coach at IUPUI about how he really should be at a place he can get floor time.

One case I remember of a guy buried at the end of the bench at a power-5 who decided to finish up at a mid-major...
LaRon Dendy... 6'9" power forward and center from Greenville, South Carolina, originally committed to Clemson. He instead went to Indian Hills Community College and played two years for the NJCAA school. He then went to Iowa State for the 2009�10 season, where he averaged 7.2 points and 3.6 rebounds per game in a reserve role. Following the season, Dendy announced plans to transfer. Dendy landed at Middle Tennessee. He had a strong final year averaging 14.6 points and 7.1 rebounds per game and leading the Blue Raiders to (at the time) the Sun Belt Conference regular season title. He was rewarded with the Sun Belt Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year and Associated Press honorable mention All-American. And now plays pro ball in Europe.

Sometimes you just need a chance. No, Saul isn't going to sign Simi Shittu but he might be able to get a somewhat similar kid stuck at the end of the bench somewhere who gets jarred loose by the ripple effect of the shoe thing.

I've recently kind of thought that holding onto one scholly for this type of scenario for a transfer makes sense, unless of course you can use it on a recruiting home run that is a true frosh.

Just so we all keep the Jaaron Simmons rule for undergrad transfers in mind. Minor league schools who take "really good" undergrad transfers will have them at most for two years. They'll use their redshirt transfer year to continue work toward their degree, graduate with a year of eligibility left and "graduate transfer" to a major league school for their final year of play. Not saying it is right or wrong, just reality.

You make a good point bruce. And I agree it is reality, and I'll continue to say I think it's wrong that there isn't a sit out year involved, or some other penalty to the school for recruiting away another school's player that is still on scholarship at said school.

But I'm not in the mood to debate that, and this is the recruiting thread. I wonder to what extent the Simmons transfer will affect how Saul views transfers going forward. Hmmm....
