All I can reply to is his height. I am 6'8" and when I met him I was looking up...lol...Maybe he is only 6'9" or something but I was not looking at him straight on. But yes, he is thin and your post pointed out a huge amount of things he will have to work on.

Watched this kid last night. Need to temper hopes of an immediate impact player. Didn't stand next to him, but he didn't look 6'10" - nor present himself as a 6'10" body. Certainly didn't tower over others (but long arms). He is thin, very thin (saw a web site that said he benches 120 - I'd tend to believe that - that will be his first college need). His gait shows he hasn't nearly grown into his body - which is understandable.

I watched the 1st half. he came off the bench and scored 3 points (1-3 from 3 and a missed put back) and had 3 rebounds at half (finished with 6 and 6 - about what he averaged last year at a larger school and right at his season average this year). Teams is deep, so sure coach tries to spread the minutes - not worried about his starting or not.

Offensively he'd set up briefly in the lower box, then would quickly drift to the corner looking to take a 3. Had one offensive board on put back attempt - otherwise didn't mix it up in the middle - stayed outside. On defense played the middle. one foul on a block attempt on a guard, otherwise not tested much inside. But did have difficulty holding out others on rebounds.

United Faith players didn't show much basketball acumen: poor footwork, spacing, etc. Did play aggressive D at the 3 point line and a solid half-court zone trap press. But get the impression little "coaching" taking place.

Will absolutely need a redshirt next year. Then another couple years to learn the game and get coached up. On D needs to learn how to dominate space, rather than occupy space. On offense will need to get more physical and aggressive - we don't need a stretch 4 focused on shooting shots from the 3, The kid that started ahead of him was much more active setting picks and banging down low - getting loose balls, etc.

Understand he has only played basketball a coupe of years. Will need considerable time to continue to learn game - certainly can't teach height, but can teach how to use height - which unfortunately I don't see happening at HS program. Has decent shot, but practicing shooting and learning game are two very different things.

Again, not a talent scout or trainer, will defer to Saul on what he sees. But don't see another Flomo or Smith, nor contributing much during Carter years - good news he will learn more watching Carter's footwork in one practice than he knows at this point. Will be a couple year project, then will see.

Thanks for the analysis, cc-cat.

Probably a good thing that he'll get a year to bang with Doug Taylor in practice while trying to put some big muscle on that frame. I agree he's not an immediate impact player, especially since there are so many ahead of him on the roster. But there is potential if he and the staff can get him on a good program from the start.

you sound like a scout. Nice work

Physicality alone will make him a definite redshirt in my opinion.

If we don't have injuries next year we should be able to easily redshirt Springs. We would have Carter, Doug in the post with swing men Block, Gareri and Vander Plas. Not to mention what looks like a steal in McMurray.

Anyone have an updated stat line for Nathan now that his regular season appears to be complete? I tried looking it up by the school's box scores are maintained by MaxPreps and you have to be a member to view them.

Turns out my childhood neighbor is closely involved with UFCA in some capacity. I asked him about Nathan and here's what he said: He'll be good in a few years!! Long, athletic and decent touch from three!! Not Tony but he could have a nice career... Still learning how to play

Sounds like a gamble/project. There aren't many 6'11 athletes in the MAC. A lot of the time, kids that size in the MAC are the stiffs that play at WMU and NIU. Sometimes I think we should take a flyer on a kid like this and see if he develops I would assume this will be a redshirt.

You can sign up for free. It shows him averaging 5.9 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game. He's shot 48 percent, including 5 of 21 on 3-pointers. He's made 9 of 17 free throws. Certainly not impressive numbers, so I guess as others have said, this must be a case of potential to improve a lot.

I worry that we are adding 2 of our 3 guys who average less than 7 ppg. Murrell is only about 5 ppg as well. McMurray is doing very well but we need bodies with our injury issues. We don't have time to redshirt every freshman we get.

Thanks for the stats. How many minutes is he averaging?

I only ask because it looks like there are at least 4 other guys on the team that had D-1 offers, including another big man. Hopefully a redshirt year can get him ready to play when Doug leaves.

I don't think too many high school teams track minutes. The team has six guys averaging 8.2 ppg or more. Springs and two other guys have played in almost every game and average a few points per game. It sounds like the team is quite deep and I'd doubt if Springs even plays half the minutes in a typical game.

Springs and United Faith out in semis of NC Independent (means private) school playoffs. He had 2 points, in first game, 2 points in second game and 4 points in semifinal loss. Other stats only reported for first game (3 rebounds, 4 blocks).

Nice video. Obviously his stats don't jump off the page, but I like the potential. Athletic for 6'10, seems to have nice touch near the rim and gets his shot off quick, including the threes I saw him take. Also some nice passes out of the post and within the post. Potential.

No shooting expert but, his shot looked a bit more conventional than some of our guard/former guards Kirk, Culver or Butler...

Saul mentioned in the Cleveland Caravan video on Facebook that Nate has a 7'4" wingspan. That is some serious length! I don't care what other offers he got. If the staff can bulk him up in a redshirt year and teach him how to play in this system, he's gonna be interesting to watch. Can't wait to see what can be done with him.

The kid could be good. It looked horrible to throw in a project when you needed immediate help, but now that two schollies have opened it does not seem that bad. One or two gambles out of 13 is not bad. The questions are how many gambles do we have on our roster and who will we land with the two open scholarships?

The only thing that scares me about redshirting in the current era we're in is that these kids can and will transfer at will. I'm mortified at the thought of any kid being redshirted from here on in.
