I agree with BC 98 here. The MAC is far more of a player development league, and I believe that's what Saul and staff will be good at. At the same time, I just don't buy a lot of the star ratings for kids, particularly outside of the top 75 or so. Also, it's gonna take some time for Saul to build up relationships in Ohio/midwest. I asked him at the coaching caravan in Cbus if he'd made inroads with former Bcats who are now coaching like Sonny Johnson and Kirk Lehman--both state championship coaches. He said yes, they were off to a good start, but there's a lot more relationship-building that has to be done before it gets to the point where they think "Ohio" first when recommending schools to kids...

By the way, look at one of Saul's mentors, Bo Ryan. Look how successful he's been with kids who are generally ignored by other top Big 10 schools. Marched through the tourney last year with a bunch of kids hardly anybody heard of in HS...

I say yes and no. My two cents on "stars" is that they do matter to a small degree. To me, the difference from a 2-star to a 3-star might mean that the player has demonstrated a little more special ability, or a little higher level athleticism. I.e., there might be a little more talent there. At the end of the day, to compete with some of the big boys once in awhile, it takes above average talent and athleticism.

But the point about Bo Ryan and finding guys that fit exactly what they want to do is spot on, I agree. I absolutely think that was part of the problem last season - Saul & Co. didn't have the guys to play in their system the way they wanted to.

Other news:

Miami added SF Derrick Daniels from Thurgood Marshall. He had offers from Iowa and Dayton. Not bad, Redhawk.

"Had" offers from Iowa and Dayton is correct. Looks like a high 2 star to me. Hope he likes playing in front of smaller crowd at his future Redchicken home than he prolly did at his D11 HS. If he's good outta the gate - he will likely be be GONE soon anyway.......

Toledo just got a verbal from a kid who plays for Chicago Simeon. They also will have a former Ohio recruit Steve Taylor from Simeon on the roster, but has to sit out until next year.

I wouldn't call this the "best" dunk as the video suggests, but this is pretty impressive.

JC was telling the truth when we said he wanted to be at Ohio for a while, then an opportunity he never thought would present itself did. Same goes for Saul, he truly believes with 100% of his heart that he will be here long term, BUT, if that too good to refuse offer comes along he'll do whats best for him and his family. Doesn't mean he isn't sincere today, just means things change.

Do you guys go to the same barber or something? It's nice when I get two "cookie cutter" responses to a post that appear to be group think. I'll just have to say that I disagree with you. I don't think a man of integrity -- which I believe Saul to be -- makes a commitment that openly and to as many different people as he has and then doesn't follow through when push comes to shove. The analogy to the the J.C. situation is not valid. J.C. said he liked it here and would like to stay, but he never, ever make a definitive statement about his desire to stay at here long-term the way Saul has. In fact, I've never heard any other newly hired coach make any type of similar statement. Please go back and look at what he said and how he said. It wasn't just I'd like to stay here for awhile, it was I WILL stay here for the long term -- at least until my young daughter graduates from Athens High School. Then he confirmed his commitment to me in the personal conversation I mentioned. If he leaves before that daughter graduates (except if he's fired), I'll personally lead the "tar and feathering" brigade. I don't think anyone has been tarred and feather in Athens County since we drove William Holmes McGuffey out of town! ;-)

You would tar and feather a guy for taking a better job?

I wouldn't have a problem with someone moving to a better job. That's why I was somewhat puzzled when Saul strongly said that he would be here for the duration. Why paint yourself into a corner?

But that's my point. I don't think he's lying. I think he really believes it and he'll believe it right up until he leaves (if he does). I hope he does live up to his word but I also won't be mad at him for leaving for a bigger job. I wasn't mad at Groce and I wasn't mad at Christian. I see Saul as having an almost childlike "How cool is this?" personality. And as much as we love Ohio we are a stepping stone program.

That's my point. Neither of them made the kind of commitment that Saul did. They all said the standard "B" flat kind of things about liking their job, Athens and OHIO, but they never said they were here for the long haul. They gave you enough string to hope that maybe they were thinking long-term but neither of them made a strong statement about their longevity here. Saul made a commitment. That's totally different situation. I was disappointed when both Groce and Christian left. I had hoped that they would have stayed longer. But, I did not think they had ever lied to the fan base or to me personally. If Saul leaves short of his commitment that'll be an entirely different scenario. I, for one, don't think we will have to worry about that so this discussion is kind of academic in nature. I do not expect to have to place that order for tar and feathers! ;-)

We don't have to be a stepping stone program. I think when JG was here, if he'd stayed for 2 more years, OUr program could have really gained ground on being THE program in the MAC, and becoming more nationally relevant along the lines of some A-10, MVC schools. And who knows, maybe Saul gets it there. As has been discussed on here before, there are a lot of resources in place to make that possible. But if the program gets back to a 23-27 win type season that leads to multiple tournament appearances in the NCAA's or NIT, then I think long term, the financial resources can be there to keep a coach with salary bumps. They've already put themselves in a positive position by getting the head coach to a $500k/yr salary range. That at least eliminates moving for another mid-major job just for pay reasons.

Not knowing much about him, what about him makes you say he'll be a three year starter?

Welp, Buffalo just got another one. This time a 7 footer.

Looks like he was getting looks by a ton of big schools but none offered. Late bloomer, perhaps?

Maybe that would explain the looks from the bigger schools then. They were there to see Trent and saw a 7 footer and probably thought "oh what the hell, why not?"
