98, I have to agree with shabamon that we don't have enough info to draw any conclusions re how Gollon will compare to any of our current players.

Question for you NCAA followers-when is the next signing period? I assume we're past the early signing period.

GOt through the tapes and found some more. I like his frame. Listed as a SF but he handles the ball A LOT! SOlid handles going right and left. Finishes well left and right. Shot needs a few fine adjustments but I like the work ethic

https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=397779970376505&vide...

He is solid and has some bulk. Will come into Ohio and get the full onslaught of the new strength coach. I like this pick up. Guys are gonna have to come in and compete. Not sure how you get graded out a 2* up there where no one can possibly see you.....but then again I can go through 2 stars that shined on bigger stages. They play in DIII pitting them against smaller schools but he played at Stevens Point his frosh year before transferring (which is actually a big deal). He is playing against weaker comp but he is crushing it...

http://www.centralwisconsinsports.net/2015/02/gollon-jami.../

Featured on local news in a nice piece http://www.wsaw.com/home/headlines/Pacellis-Gollon-Domina...

I like the pick up. Should be intersting comp with our guy from Lincoln right off the bat. Scoring wings drive the show. Pacelli BB has a FB page for anyone that wants to follow along

I think the one thing we can guarantee from this pick up is that Jordan Dartis is going to be handling the ball...a lot. Unless a late PG is brought in, I think we can safely assume Jordy is our guy for the future and Simmons will have to take him under his wing.

Interesting pick up. Got to search out some game tapes.

Intersting adage regarding the late additions.

"last ones added are the first ones recruited over" No, it is not one of Tom Crean's mantras but it is a reality. If you are a late signee and someone better comes in next year you better find a way to get on the floor.

Does this pick up suggest Ryan Taylor, Dartis or someone else picking up point guard duties in addition to Simmons.

Looks like all guard/wing commits can handle the ball so it could work out a number of ways.

Gollon missed half junior season due to injury. Wonder if he played aau summer hoops? If not that could be another reason he's under the radar. He worked out w his older brother last summer. Brother recent grad of an outstanding Mercer program and now coaching at UW-Stevens Point, one of best Division III programs. James probably benefitted more hy working out w brother than playing AAU.

basketball IQ probably high in that town w Stevens Point college program having a great tradition. Coach Phillips won a natl title there as a player under Bo Ryan.

Correction: Saul won a Division III national title under Bo Ryan at UW Platteville, not Stevens Point.

I really hope so. Don't have to look further than our current team to realize this. We'll need a backup to Simmons. Anyone whose seen our recruits play know if someone could handle the point?

Looking at film on all of them I am impressed with the skillsets and handles. james on Dartis both have decent handles and ball control. I think pure point guards are needed in Groce's, Bennet's and Holtmann's systems but I am not sure a pure point is going to be a necessity in Saul's. WIth BBIQ and ball movement I think having wings that are skilled and move the ball with the pass looking for that great open shot is more important. There will be a PG emerge out of this group.

I think James is a true 6'3 stretching to 6'4 guy. He has some size and should fill out to about Paul Baron size. I like guys like that. Jakubak from BG was a guy who gave us fits though he was not a fast, overly skilled guy....just understood the game and the angles...and how to make the offense run and wait till the ball came back to him in a position to score. IIRC Sauls teams at his last post had heady guards like that. He will win here and those players will be pretty good in the MAC if their defensive mind set is good. The offense looks like it will be on par. keep Tony getting better down low and stretching the floor. Grab another big and play ball. Things are on the right track

EDIT. wisconsin Playgound Warriors. Played out of Milwaukee. Long haul but a good program.

Unless I'm mistaken, Simmons has three years of eligibility left, right?

W E A K.

go to a OHIO Division IV school and sit through a season. On every next night attend a Div I school and sit through a season. Wisconsin small school divisions are even weaker. Just looking at those clips was pretty amazing as to the disparity in numbers and quality/depth of athletes vs OHIO/Indiana/Illinois.Oddly enough though there are really good individuals around the state that are easily spotted (bo Ryan does a great job) and that fly Waaaaay under the radar.

I was watching those clips and thought what a 2* athlete looks like against weak comp. That is why I was relieved he played with an AAU club down in 'Waukee that travels nationally.

Good comparisons Bornna ! I like the intangibles that this kid just might have.....his brother being in the game could be a huge positive because he has a foot up on understanding what it takes to play at this level.
Another poster compared this kid to Jake Kretzer from Akron, and I thought the same thing watching his videos. I think that he has a better handle than Jake which is encouraging to me. The game gets so much faster at this level, and how kids adjust to the pace of play is critical to their success or lack there of ! Hope this kid has the work ethic of a 6'4" "tweener" from Muncie that lit it up in the Convo for us !

I read on Arkley's latest article about Gollon that Thomas and Wadley are both chances of opening up scholarships while Treg could graduate early and go elsewhere. I realize Chandler was brought in as a practice player and Wadley's time is non-existent (he would benefit from being a D-2 player in Florida) but if we lose Treg we are definitely having leadership issues next year. I really hope Treg stays, even if he graduates.

I was wondering is a transfer without sitting out a possibility for wadley, what is the reasoning behind his lack of minutes in conference ? .. even one game we had 2 bigs foul out and he never got a minute of playing time ?

borna, I think you're right on about the work of identifying HS talent in the upper Midwest. Hockey takes so many of the better athletes during the basketball season. But there are diamonds there who can be identified even if they are going up against weak competition.

One of the best examples was Trevor Huffman of Petoskey, MI. Had a very good HS career but he didn't really receive any Div I offers until Kent State got in on him late. Kent's staff did a great job identifying Huffman's Div. I potential and then developing his abilities once he got to Kent. I'm sure that among Kent's fanbase, there were naysayers who questioned the fact that Huffman didn't have other Div. I offers. Huffman still is the leading scorer in Kent State history and has had a solid career in Europe. NOw he has a vision to teach the game to the next generation using the Euro model from an early age...

http://articles.petoskeynews.com/2012-07-18/petoskey-high...

Upper Michigan, upper Wisconsin and Minnesota have some kids like this if college coaches can identify them and make those long trips to recruit them.

Although he is from Oregon rather than the upper Midwest, Taylor Braun is an example of how Coach Phillips and this staff have a track record in identifying otherwise overlooked talent. Kid had no Div. I offers but ended up being Summit League POY and is now playing professionally.

What I like about your comments Jeff, are the developing players part. The track record is there that Saul & Co have done that part very well. To me, and this isn't a slight of Gollon, or any other recruit, we should expect a little bit higher level of recruit in general than those that were brought to NDSU. I think we're seeing that this year. If they're developing a slightly higher level recruit than they brought to Fargo, as fans we're all gonna be pretty happy in a few years.

fan who lives too far away to make it to many games but has Convinced his kids that Ohio State Is the Wal Mart of college athletics. (Nothing against Wal mart)
