I have watched this team for 20 years and this team looked like a team years ago. They lost their aggressiveness, they played not to lose and Western played extremely well after they were down 0-2. Very poor showing on a night that was very important.

Not sure what our gals were trying to do, but we gave WMU a lot of opportunities.

A good season that ends on a sour performance!!

I'd beg to differ. Western dug the ball extremely well no matter what we threw at them. The key I feel was our lack of middle attack. We seemed to pass the ball to the middle rather than to the four slot and we had a traffic jam in there. I don't think the season is over, we just won't get a very favorable seed in the tourney.

When you're up 2 sets to none and ahead in the 5th set and lose, that is not good. I know very little about volleyball, but this one hurt. I was amazed that we lost it.

Rough loss but give credit to Western. They really dug in when we had them on the ropes several times and came up with some really big plays.

I think that you will find that our kills went way down the last three games. Too many dinks(mash potatoes)that opened the door for WMU. We just lost too many points because we were way too soft.

Tend to agree with Swank.

My thoughts:

1. I think the double-bye hurt us. This was Western's third match of the Tournament, and our first. We were not in sync at all during the first set.

2. Western played GREAT defense all night long. We simply could not find the floor. On several occasions we blasted the ball over the net, and their dig came back across the net and caught us by surprise.

3. We simply could not get in system. As Swank points out, we couldn't get our passes to the right spot to be able to utilize all of our hitters. The middles were a non-factor. Too much pressure on our outsides forced quite a few hitting errors.

4. Plain and simple, Western outplayed us tonight. Props to them. They deserved it. Time to re-group, re-focus, and get back to work. We can still do some damage in the NCAA tournament.

Just saw the stats on the MAC website and one other thing sticks out - service errors - 13 for us and only 2 for them. You can't give away a net 11 points and win against a team like Western who has been one of the top 3 MAC squads over the past 30 years.

Agreed, but I'd give some credit to Western on that as well. They kept the pressure on, and we were never able to get in sync. They got into our heads. Way too many unforced errors tonight, both serving and hitting.

Just got back from Athens. I'm disappointed with the loss as much as the next guy, but Western Michigan played outstanding with their backs against the wall.

We still have unfinished business against Dayton on Friday. However, this game is now a must win against the A-10's champion.

Important point here...if we want to have any shot at an at-large bid, we're going to have to go into Dayton and beat them.

Agree, beating Dayton is crucial for any chance. Another factor Ohio can't control is how the other tourney teams fare. If teams with no chance of a bid win their tourneys, providing their league with more entries into the NCAA, that reduces the pool for other bubble teams.

I made the drive up for this game. It was my first Ohio volleyball game...maybe ever. My only question is related to the crowd. Was this a typical crowd in terms of size and sound?

There were many more students than usual and the community attendance was somewhat larger than usual. As for sound and atmosphere, it was typical but not as orchestrated due to the nature of a MAC tournament.

You mean that certain components of our usual atmosphere were muzzled? Attendance for a regular season match would have been reported at 3850. :)

Actually, it was oldkatz that was muzzled, and to a lesser extent the band...at the behest of the MAC...

That's what I meant by certain components.
