I found the flood map. There is no difference between the flood zone of the parcel the Convo sits in and the entire athletic mall, which includes new buildings in the last 20 years.

See Appendix 10: City of Athens Flood Map

https://www.athensswcd.org/uploads/3/0/1/0/30105193/nhmp_...

Then see the campus master plan from 2016 with the basketball practice facility located on Richland adjacent to the Convo.

https://www.athensnews.com/news/campus/ou-plan-calls-for-...

You should look at the current FEMA FIRM Map.
Just google "am I in flood zone" and put int the Convo's address.

It shows that most of the area at/near the Convo is in a Flood Zone.

There's no question that,in the past, there have been structures built in flood zones.

But,regulations regarding this type of construction, have gotten a lot more restrictive over time.

Speaking for NJ ,where I do my designs,if you want to build in a Flood Zone there are restrictions on placing fill, not increasing runoff by providing what is known as "storm water management" and "treating" run off to remove things like Suspended Solids.
Basically, your project can't have any impact on properties "downstream".

These things can be addressed, but they increase, significantly, construction costs and long term maintenance.

Its a nothingburger as the university has several future facilities planned in the flood zone. Clippinger Phase 3 is in the flood zone and just approved.

https://www.ohio.edu/news/2020/10/board-trustees-approves...

According to the article you posted, they won't even begin design until sometime
this year,with construction in 2022.

That design will have to comply with all current regulations for building in a Flood Zone.
The will also have to get also necessary state permits for building in a Flood Zone.
I don't know if building in the Hocking River Flood Zone requires U.S. Army Corps of Engineers approval.

I never said you can't build in a flood zone, its just a lot more complicated and expensive.

Unless something has changed since I was at O.U., wrestling has a separate practice room.
They only use the Convo for matches.

That wrestling room is in the actual "confines" of the Convocation Center. Located on the NW side of the Convocation Center, but under the stands, and within the designs of the original footprint of the building. Could not do that with a basketball court.

Should have been clearer with my post.
Spent many an hour in that room.

A question,if you know,at one time there was room off the main floor that was filled with foam rubber for practice diving.
That's when they were still using the old Natatorium.
Do you know if its still there ?

If you look around, travel around enough you see the types of things that coaches want and need for their programs. Here are a couple:

Dayton: https://daytonflyers.com/sports/2013/8/8/MBB_0808135455.aspx

Xavier: https://goxavier.com/facilities/kohlhepp-family-auxiliary...

Basically with all the things that go on in the Convocation Center, a practice facility would be monumental. In the past they have to try and go to local high schools just to practice when events are going on and Ping is unavaliable

I've probably told this story before on here, but nevertheless, back in the early 70's I was talking with John McComb and told him its a shame they didn't put ice in the Convo. He told me they were going to but he told them not to do it. I asked why, he said "where would we practice?". The plan was to replace Bird Arena years ago. We had quite a bit of alumni support lined up but it just never came together.

Some of the talking heads on the Fan in Columbus are wondering if the Tar Heels might show some interest in Coach Holtman? I can't imagine after the fiasco against Oral Roberts they would even consider it. However, if some late season curve ball opening happens and Holtman's name is out there, you know what an opening in Columbus would generate; madness on this board. I hope to God that doesn't happen for many years, because I believe Coach Boals likes his current living arrangments. He's got a pretty full deck of players, the sky is the limit for our success from this point forward. It is the late season curve ball openings that worry me.

High Schools?
That's ridiculous. Of all the things that alums are "embarrassed" about over the years, that one should be the one that actually merits embarrassment. Sending your University's athletes in search of a High School to shoot and practice.

Since we have the engineer up top discussing building in a flood zone and knowing the Convocation Center is really a dormitory with an arena in it's bowels how about another end run? Can we build a much needed parking structure
with parking on the bottom levels that happens to have a practice facility on top? The Vern Alden Memorial Parking structure?

Bowling Green was smart enough to incorporate one into the Stroh Center.

There has to be some way to pull this off that isn't cost prohibitive. Other sports could use it too, right? Like volleyball, etc.?

What are the basketball programs currently doing for training table and diets? I realize that we don't have a full training table. I notice that Duquesne's new facility, while it only seats about 5000, has state of the art training table facilities.

It would be damn nice if we could have an 8,000 seat arena with the practice court and training table amenities. I think it would be incredibly tough to pull this off politically and budget-wise. And I don't see an OHIO version of Boone Pickens on the horizon.

Wright State used to be in the same situation back in the early 2000s. The Nutter Center held many events (concerts, graduations, HS tournaments, minor league hockey, volleyball etc.) that the basketball team always had to schedule around.

They were literally left trying to practice in the Auxiliary gym inside the Nutter Center and fighting off Campus Rec leagues, students playing pick-up games, volleyball practices, indoor soccer practices.

Here's another one people don't usually think about: baseball. College season starts in February. That means "pre" season is December and January. Don't know if you've looked around but it's hard to do much outdoor baseball in Dec/Jan in Ohio - so all those batting cages, pitching mounds, fielding drills etc. happen INDOORS somewhere.

WSU - of the lowly Horizon league - got smart and built a dedicated practice facility strictly for the athletes. It has multiple indoor basketball courts and a couple multi-use areas (for baseball/soccer). It has their own weight room and medical/training rooms. It has their own meeting rooms for film study or study tables/tutoring. It even has food options. Literally a one-stop shop for the athletes.

Believe me, it has made a HUGE difference. From the coaches, to the athletes to the prospective athletes and on down the line.

The fact that OU still doesn't have this, and has resorted to practicing at HS is mind-boggling IMO.

Where else you going when no gyms on campus are available? You just cancel practice?

That is true. The Convo was built as a true multipurpose, the shape is correct for hockey and the floor is hollow with 3ft of crawl space to allow for infrastructure

Before Walter, baseball used to practice in the Convo.

No training table when I played and no practice facility. When I studied I went to Alden Library. Iím glad I was a part of the student population and not sequestered. I turned out just fine and I graduated in four years. These amenities some are calling for are not needed.

Just a thought about some amenities not being needed: It seems almost like an arms race between superpowers. Each school tries to have equal or better/bigger facilities than the next school down the road. Someone mentioned gold plated toilet seats at Alabama in the luring Oates away in Alabama. I know it is just a metaphor but there is a grain of truth in it. Flashier/bigger/more equipment....on and on it goes. Meanwhile, ticket prices go up and up.

Problem is, when everyone else has these things they become needed. You have to win over your kids and families who are attracted to Bell's and whistles. To think otherwise is not being dosed in reality

The science of training, fueling, recovering, mending boo boos and preparing the modern scholar athlete has advanced from the days Bobcats had to walk uphill both ways to the Convocation Center.

When I player soccer at O.U. it was the same.
We even had to sneak into the football locker room for lemonade, after practice.

But,unfortunately,in today's world, the amenities are needed to attract talent.

The last dorm we built at FDU was more like a hotel.

But,its what students expect.

All of these amenities are non monetary compensation to the athletes. The few at the top have the best coaches and pay them big bucks, and have the best of everything else, because they donít pay the players. I think that is changing and we would be foolish to join that arms race.

100% correct.

Yes...no doubt...you hope recruits base a decision on coach, campus and fit. However, you have many that don't put much stock into any of that stuff and the difference in getting a recruit could very well come down to facilities, amenities and those gold toilets. It's all about taking that picture in uniform on their visit in the fancy state of the art locker-room to show off to friends on social media.

Everyone wants to be loved and told how great they are. When you're 18 and the prettiest girl is all into you - she'll most often win - not the girl with the great personality.

giacomo...I'm not advocating for extremely elaborate facilities, and I know we can't get involved in a high major arms race. But, I think it would really help us to be competitive in recruiting on our level, and to retain good coaches, if we had a practice gym that wasn't under obligations to the student body as a whole and other programs outside athletics. Also, the training table is helpful. It ensures that athletes, who have a higher level of physical demands, have the right nutrition. You and I both know that there have been significant advances in nutrition since when we were both undergrads here at the same time.

By all means, let's just slap Chuck Taylors on our team, have them do jumping jacks and leg lifts, give them salt pills, a pack of Tareytons and call it a day. If it was good enough for Frankie Baumholtz and Dow Finsterwald then it should be good enough for Jason Preston.
