1. You have to be effing kidding me. Ryan White? Who else will stare blankly into the abyss while trying to tap donors for money? Who else can coordinate the most non-740 or 614 phone numbers of which to call me from?

2. It's a GREAT DAY TO BE A FURMAN PALLADIN!!!

3. Schaus did a great job. 12 years ago, if I gave you a list of his accomplishments, every single person on this board would have jumped out of their shoes with excitement. Give him credit.

4. I do find it interesting that the MAC has one of the most storybook opaque TV contracts with ESPN, yet one of our own is heading to be a conference commissioner? Think we'll see Chattanooga vs. Citadel on DAZN?

5. The NCAA Committee never sat well with me. I don't think Schaus made his presence felt, but if that no-talent Nellis made him resign - well, Nellis is a bigger no-talent than I first thought. Nellis. Yutz.

6. Will there still be a reception at the Schaus home? Technically it was included in the donor benefits, so they should stick to it. It doesn't say Schaus has to be employed by Ohio, or even home for the event - but it does have to physically take place at his home. Like a HS rager at an empty home.

7. Anyone think Schaus made the "Safe" hire in Boals knowing what lay ahead for his own future? Would it have been different if McDavis was still in the head chair and Schaus's future was more certain? Pitino? BUELLER?
I
8. Bob Cooley is requesting his job back. 30 years and no MAC titles is nothing to scoff at.

Itís always good to be a Furman Paladin - theyíre a fifth our enrollment and have an endowment 20% larger than us. Their grads must know how to make money.

Youíve lost your touch with the Patino rants. You must be joking (sarcasm)I guess.

Whenever we lost a coach, everyone used to say the Shaus kept a "short list" of
potential replacements.

Anyone know what the process is to replace the A.D.?

I presume Shaus gave O.U. some type of "notice".
So,hopefully,that process has started.

The first thing an AD wants to do is replace men's FB and hoops. It's how they make an imprint on the program and leapfrog to a bigger school if it works out. Since we just hired Boals, that leaves football. Unless it will be assured that Frank is leaving soon, we may have trouble filling the post.

I think the decision to become A.D. involves more then just the FB and men's BB coaches.

Schaus came to O.U.in April of 08.

Solich was here.

TOS was still men's coach B.B. coach.

So,unless he knew TOS was going to resign in June,he came in with coaches in place for both sports.

I think A.D. is no different then a coach.
A number of factors have to be assessed when someone is deciding whether to take the job.

Outside of hiring/firing coaches, what are the major responsibilities of an AD? Is it fundraising? Scheduling?

You might think so, but how many people really care beyond the big two sports? Let's say we win MAC titles in both but the new AD didn't make the hires. It don't mean diddly when they go to apply for that open Big Ten AD position.

Since his arrival, Nellis has been obvious in his neutering of Schaus and I don't believe for a minute that Schaus had little if anything to do with hiring Boals.

The SoCon is a parachute.

The more I think about it, the more I agree.

Case can and has been made Schaus missed on his last two basketball hires. I supported five years of Saul but results just werenít there for money paid... too big of gaff on Schaus record and he canít take credit for football success...

So someone in the know, is Nellis making this next AD hire or is board calling shot?

Is that the same thing as saying, "It's a great day to be an unreconstructed rebel?" cheeky cool sad  Asking for a neo-Confederate friend at VMI, the West Point of the South, where Thomas ("Stonewall") Jackson once taught.

[Sorry, but we hadn't had a post about the Late Slaveholders Rebellion now for a few months, and I couldn't help myself.  Afterall, this is the off-season, and we need a little thread drift every now and then.]

I agree Jeff. Jim has tried to go to the next level as an AD the last few years without success. This is a move up / semi-retirement job.
Why might/maybe Schaus wanted to move on?? McDavis allowed department heads to run their kingdoms as they wished. Dr. Nellis was at Jeff Boals interview. Way more "hands on" than McDavis. Athletic Dept. , along with all others, have had a 7 % budget cut the last 3 years. Schaus quit the NCAA selection committee 3 years into his 5 year appointment the same year Nellis came on board. ??????????????????

Not saying anything either President did is wrong. Just looks like a different style of leadership.

Really wishing Jim Schaus the best in his new job. !!!

Nothing I've read about Nellis seemed to indicate that he had/has much interest in athletics.

Does anyone here know if/how much he was involved with athletics at his other jobs ?

To me, Nellis does come off as wanting to be involved with/control ,pretty much everything at O.U.
That would explain his interest with hiring of Boals and potentially the new A.D.

Itís curious to me that some folks say that Nellis wants to control everything while others have said its a pre retirement job. I donít get it, which is it? Others say heís not interested in athletics and others say he wants to control it. See this post above. Iím getting mixed signals here. And some folks have said Nellis wants to spend less on athletics and he goes out and spends more on a BB coach.

Sometimes in life, opportunities just swing your way. You explore them and they are either attractive to you or not. As one gets older, you begin to understand better what your strengths are and what you like and don't like doing. Perhaps, being the Bobcat AD, believe it or not, stopped being much fun. If the recent and intense criticism of Shaus on Bobcattack was representative of how some felt about the AD position, it is not impossible that he was beginning to see the writing on the wall, and wanted to get out while the getting is good. My sense of Shaus though is that he always wanted to be the man in charge. With a new President in town, a legend like Frank riding shotgun over the football program, and now a local legend of sorts running the Basketball program, you have to wonder whether Shaus was feeling sort of lost in the shuffle. As Head of a Conference, he is certainly going to feel like "the Man" now.

When Nellis was first selected as O.U.'s president,I was one of the people who,
based on his resume, age, etc.viewed his taking the job as "early retirement".

That opinion has changed since he got here.

I still think this will be the last stop on the train.
But,based on what I've read,he does seem to be someone who wants to control everything.

As far as athletics.
Again, there doesn't seem to anything in his past that indicates an interest in
athletics.

Still, that doesn't mean he doesn't want to control the department.

I'm also concerned, given the comments in several of his "First Friday"letters, that he may be more interested in "making a statement",with the hiring of a new A.D.,as opposed to selecting the best candidate for the job.

If you look online at His vision Texas Tech when he took the job he said his vision (summarized by me)was to cultivate athletics, have competitive teams and that athletics are the ďfront porchĒ of the university. All the right things, I believe. Those statements may have been more necessary at TTU than at Ohio, but nevertheless he addressed them there. Havenít seen it listed at Ohio, but may have missed it.

If you could post a link or where to find Nellis's Vision Texas Tech,I'd really like to read it.

From reading the information that was put out when he applied to be O.U.'s president, as well as some other background information I looked at,he didn't come off as being interested in athletics.
My opinion may also be somewhat jaded, since I really liked Mc Davis, and how felt about O.U.'s sports.
