Apparently at this point, it's basically a formality to pass these, so they probably will be in place for next season for men's basketball:

The big one is moving back the 3-point line to the FIBA international distance of 22-1 3/4. The current distance is 20-9, which was an increase from 19-9 in 2008. Shooting dropped from 35.2 percent that year to 34.4 the next year, but has moved back up to 35.2. The NIT used the FIBA distance this past year experimentally and teams shot 33 percent.

The other key one is that the shot clock will reset to 20 seconds following an offensive rebound. This also was an experimental rule in the NIT.

A few other changes:

The committee recommended players be assessed a Flagrant 2 technical foul and ejected should they use derogatory language about an opponent�s race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation or disability.

The committee recommended allowing coaches to call live-ball timeouts in the last two minutes of the second half and the last two minutes of any overtime periods. Currently, coaches aren�t allowed to call any live-ball timeouts during the game.

The committee recommended that during the last two minutes of the second half or the last two minutes of any overtime, instant replay review can be conducted if a basket interference or goaltending call has been made.

I certainly hope they don't do this. I think the worst rule change in the history of the oblong ball sport was when they started allow coaches to call timeouts from the sidelines. This has lead to these last second TOs right before the ball is snapped that everyone on the field thinks is a live play, only to find out that they play they just ran doesn't count because the darn coach called a TO a millisecond before the ball was snapped. I've seen games where the officials had to review if the coach called the TO in time. Ridiculous. I see this basketball proposal has having similar prospects for abuse. I may be in the minority here, but I think the more you can put the players in charge (under the direction of the coach, of course) the better.

I thought about that. I guess the idea of the rule is to get teams to shoot less 3s and emphasize inside game more. Maybe Ohio was doing that a little too soon.

There was a proposed rule change in 1973 when I was at St. Louis University and they were the host school for the Final 4. The proposed change was to raise the baskets from 10� to 10�6� or to 11�, I can�t recall. In days leading up to the final, they had controlled scrimmages on campus where the Billikens had played years ago and was now used for pick up games and stuff. My recollection it was something less then Grover. When the courts weren�t being used for these studies, they were open to others so of course I was out there shooting. What I recall is that the height didn�t appear that different but by the end of the day it felt like I was 0 for the barn.

Having season tickets gave me the option to purchase tickets for the Final 4, and I got to see UCLA win their 7th straight championship, beating Memphis-State in the Bill Walton show: 21 for 22 from the field, 2 for 2 from the line.
