Just wanted to say this is one of the most well put-together, concise and informative threads I've ever seen. Especially the main post from Ted that he keeps updating as people give more information and possibilities. I was thinking of trying to come up with some way to consolidate all the possible coaches and their information, but Ted not only did it, he did it much better than I could have.

This is the level of information I'd expect to see on a high major website. Our conference may not be big-time but this board/thread certainly is.

Props Ted.

A sleek looking Citation landed in Albany at 11:00 this morning. Someone arriving to look around like Frank did on his own? Someone heading out of town?

Was the Citation being borrowed from a wealthy Greek businessman/professional basketball team owner?

Chevy stopped making the Citation decades ago. I don't see why this is important.

No big deal. Just a couple of kids whose rich parents bribed folks to let them into OU returning from spring break in the West Indies.

Surprised after reading through this that Geno Ford's name never surfaced.

Ohio grad.
Head coaching experience.
Ohio roots.
Success in MAC.
Already tried to leap (Bradley) and possibly learned from that experience.

I know most are probably against this, but I think Schaus could do a lot worse

I don't. Geno would be the absolute worst.

Are Bobcat Love's candidates not being listed for a reason? While unpopular picks with some posters and mods, he laid out well thought out cases for them in previous threads.

Great sleuth work! This is the kind of inside scoop rumor information I've been looking for and has been sadly lacking on BA since Saul's dismissal. Now, guys and gals please check to see real estate transaction in that posh area of The Plains where Grobe and other coaches have lived.

ryan peden is the best one on this list. tom ostrom may have recruited 4 star 5 star players but that was at Indiana which is a proram with way more pedigree than ohio.

Someone already brought up Pat Kelsey and I'll just throw his name out there again:

-Can recruit Ohio and has Midwest ties.
-Cut from the same cloth and comes from almost the same tree as Groce.
-Has former Ohio coach Jayson Gee on staff.

People like to bring up the fact that he went to UMass only to turn it down moments later. There's probably a reason for that don't you think? Maybe he's not wanting to get into a bigger program right away or ever. Maybe UMass was a mess that he wasn't willing to clean up no matter how much money. Ohio may be just enough of a step up for him.

If Schaus is only looking at prior head coaching experience, he has to be on the short list.

If you want to make inroads at a school like Moeller, this is your guy.

I know youíre from Cincy, whatís the talent level like there? I assume thereís a lot of talented basketball players. My high school knowledge is mainly Columbus/ SouthEast Ohio. I know we pulled Campbell from Cincy. Seems like the MAC as a whole does a poor job of recruiting there. Maybe getting a coach with ties to the Nati would be a good idea. If itís like a Columbus, the kids generally end up going P5. Is Cincy the same way?

Nowhere near as good as Columbus, Cleveland, or even Dayton. I pay the most attention to the GMC and there may be one D1 prospect a year in the whole league anymore.

I know most won't go for it because of the huge jump but VanderWal from Marietta is outstanding. Ohio roots and has recruited Ohio well. Played at Walsh maybe? And has completely turned around that program. The OAC is one of the best D3 leagues in the country.

I've seen a good number of collegiate teams in Ohio practice over the years. Marietta's are among the best. Fun style to watch too.

Last D3 guy I can think of who jumped to D1 was Larry Hunter. Just a thought.

I'd suggest that that was the reason we're in the position we are today. We hired Saul largely because he was the hot commodity after a single NCAA win. That's how you make mistakes, hiring someone based on a hot week or two in March, rather than based on the total body of work. What happened this week and next should have little bearing on who we hire. That decision should be made based on what they've accomplished up until now

+1.

I see your point, I would like us to look for a young assistant that can recruit, a Groce type. Groce recruited mike Conley and Greg oden, and we interviewed him after the tournament and his first recruiting class was amazing.

I agree completely (although Groce was hired in June, not March). I've argued elsewhere that Schaus's preoccupation with hiring someone with prior head coaching experience is a major problem. The pool of guys who (i) have a successful track record as a head coach, (ii) have recruiting ties to our region, (iii) are within our budget, and (iv) would be interested in coming here is extremely narrow.

Teams at our level do not need to artificially limit the pool of potential candidates to focus only on current head coaches. It's a guaranteed recipe to get a mediocre candidate who won't stay long or has little ambition (as the last two hires have ultimately proven).

The number of examples of mid-majors who have successfully established a winning tradition in recent years after poaching someone else's head coach is extremely small (probably just Wichita). By contrast, almost every dominant mid-majors program has consistently hired top assistants, often promoting from within (Butler, Xavier, Buffalo).

We need to identify a top assistant coach with excellent recruiting skills and a Midwestern base (e.g., Tom Ostrom).

This makes a lot of sense to me because a guy that is a big recruiter could pull in a nice transfer to quickly get the program back up to 20 wins. Then from there have a full recruiting cycle to start loading up the team with talent. Saul's mediocre recruiting was allowing for a net outflow in transfer talent, something we didn't have to deal with in the past. Its always been great transfers that have bailed out Ohio seasons. Carter is back and a freshman of the year so a nice transfer and the Cats are a much better team.

I think Jans seems like a legit option. But the Calapari suggestion just isn't grounded in reality. He's not on the list for the same reasons Coach K isn't.

Pete Nakos with the Post has been tweeting a growing problem with the current head coaches who could be considered - buyouts. We are not likely in a good position with our budget constraints to be able to assume much of that. Iím tending to think more about an assistant coach

FWIW, Jans has a buyout of 1/2 of the remaining 3 years of his contract-$375-750k depending on his new contract being renegotiated.it may be longer than 3 if thatís renegotiated.

Itís just getting harder for the midís like us to keep up, but thatís not a news to anybody.

And just as the aircraft landed in SE Ohio, the rumor of Andy Kennedy to Tulane took flight. They could probably pay quite a bit more.

It looks like the plane at Albany near 11 came from West Michigan Regional that seems to indicate Grand Valley State or Ferris State. Since Grand Valley State got knocked out of the D2 tourney today it does not seem likely. Ferris State was DII National Champion last year but did not make the D2 tournament this year.

If this is the related to the Ohio job it might be Andy Bronkema

If we really want to build something sustainable in Athens then I'm going with KC Hunt at Wilmington College. The guy can flat out coach, can flat our recruit, and his kids love him. He plays a very entertaining brand of basketball - fast breaks and a variety of presses. And he can't afford any misses in recruiting because he has a 10-11 man rotation. He's done a ton with very little in terms of resources and he even knocked off Marietta this year (and the Redchickens a few years ago). Played at Wichita State, can recruit all parts of Ohio and has no buyout. I seem to recall we had some success with a DIII coach a few years ago.

I follow the OAC, he is a good coach. I was at the Wilmington game at Cap this year and I have never seen a coach complain so much about officiating without being thrown out. He continued by complaining long and often to the OAC office afterwards. I know an official of officials who was there that same night and said he was way out of line as the refs did a good job. Still Wilmington is always competitive and as you said he has done a great job of recruiting at a school that has always had problems in that area in all sports.
