Putting him in a positive learning environment with tutors and positive academic support could have a huge effect on his learning ability. Not saying that's what happened because I don't know a thing about any of it but there are plenty of stories about kids that thrived in the right environment. Anecdotally, my nephew barely carried a 2.0 in high school and could have earned a D1 scholarship in soccer but he was a horrible student. To the point that he wasn't even allowed to play his Senior season. He decided he wasn't even going to go to college and got a job. During the summer after he graduated he started dating a girl who was headed to UNC on an academic scholarship. She got him motivated and convinced him to enroll in a community college. Long story short, he just graduated from UNC-Greensboro with a 3.6 gpa.
