He was gone before I ever set foot on campus, but seeing how much people in Athens truly loved him was enough for me to understand he was a hell of a man.

I wish his family peace.

Great story Mike, but Gary Trent never beat Miami at home :(

He was 2-1 AT Miami, and of course the destruction of Miami in the MAC title game.

Anyway, back on thread, serious when I say great story. Very very sad to hear what's happening with Coach.

Oops. Another memory glitch. Wrong opponent. But right about Ohio winning. And certainly memory of the story remains intact and vivid.

Here is my Larry Hunter story. Sorry in advance for any grammatical errors.

I started watching Ohio Basketball during the 92-93 season. I got to talk to Larry a few times when they would have their annual meet the team night at the midnight madness and also at the Coaxial Hoops Classic that they used to hold in the Convo. Once, during the fall/winter of the 93-94 season, we got to talking about our own interests outside of basketball. I mentioned I liked playing golf, although I wasn’t very good. He said we should play sometime so that following summer I got the opportunity to meet up with him and play (He easily beat me even though I played fairly well for me). He was the most down to earth person that I have ever met. During the round we talked about everything from his basketball philosophies (but not the team) to life situations, and how we handle adversity as well as successes. It was one of the best days I have ever had playing golf. When we were done we went in and got a drink to sit and relax a few minutes before heading home. Then he made this statement “Ok now you can ask me some questions about my team that you want.” I asked a few generic type questions about the team then my last was “how tall is Geno Ford actually?” He laughed heartily and said 5’6” maybe 5’7” with his shoes on. I told him that I was 5’9’ and always had to look down on Geno so I knew that the listed 5’8” was not correct. He laughed again. The following year I bought my season tickets and have had them ever since. He was one of the main reasons I fell in love with Ohio University. He, the team, and the athletic department as a whole have always been very approachable to the average fan as well as the bigger donors.

Hearing about this situation that he and his family are in saddens me deeply. He is definitely to young. they are all in my thoughts and prayers!

I talked to the Athens School Superintendent today about some ideas on honoring Coach Hunter. Nothing cleared with family yet as they are just ideas on things that could be done. It would be a community wide support of all of us if anything is done. If a few want to private message me who know the family, please do so. I do not want to publicly start things without their full approval. I think though, the amount of us who want to honor him is such that something can come about, just do not know what. The superintendent has some good ideas though but family approval first of course and community wide too. Thanks.

Wow....a flood of emotions pouring through thinking about my interactions with Coach Hunter. I was there for his first four years. Never won a MAC tournament game during my time at OHIO....and then of course gets to the dance in year 5 when I'm gone. I remember kidding him about that years later when I went back for a game.

This is a very sad time for Ohio Athletics.

I agree with the sentiments expressed here by others. Larry was a true Bobcat, and I mourn his passing.

Addressing the Elephant in the Room:

I will only add that I thought his firing was not warranted. It is true that he had had some bad MAC Tournament performances in the years prior to his firing, but I had the sense that he would've rebuilt the program. Even the best of coaches have some lean years. In my many years as an OHIO fan there are only a handful of coaches that I thought deserved being fired, and Larry was not one of them.

[For the record, I was in favor of the firing of Billy Hahn, Dale Bandy, Cleve Bryant, PapaL, and Knorr.]

Sensitive topic for sure and I think if you took a poll...it would be 50/50 on whether or not to fire or keep him after the Grunk shot. Crazy to think what would have happened to the rest of his career if the shot clangs off. #BringMeTheHeadOfJasonGrunkemeyer

Tough to blame a player for getting Larry fired

EASY to blame the guy who just might be the worst athletic director
we have ever had

If not #1– he has to be #2

I agree with this statement. I think it's almost a tie for the top two.
