You are not alone. Adidas stock has dropped significantly. This is likely to have broad repercussions -- universities are not going to want to align with any perceived improprieties. This is just the tip of the adidas-berg.

Edited to include an article that explains everything in a little more detail: http://heavy.com/sports/2017/09/jim-gatto-adidas-bribery-... /

This may be the break Big Baller Brand needs!

In all seriousness, I do wonder how well adidas will weather this storm.

While not at the level of Nike or Under Armour, they are still a major player in athletic footwear and clothing. Will a lot of universities, leagues etc. want to distance themselves from them?

I think this will get messier before it gets cleaner.

This is going to get ugly very, very quick. Likely to be the story of the year in many ways.

No, I'm not real excited to be an Adidas affiliated school right now.

Adidas makes Under Armour look like a start up company, not sure what you mean by not at the level of Nike or UnderArmour. There is little comparison between Adidas and UA.

I have daily contact with a number* of highly sought after high school basketball recruits, and would gladly accept payment (and declare it/pay income tax on it) from Ohio University OR Adidas to steer them toward our fine alma mater.

Yeah Adidas globally trumps UA in the States big time.

That's the best part, it doesn't feel like that's what was happening. Adidas was paying these guys to steer them toward Adidas colleges. The coaches mentioned in the report worked for Nike/UA schools. But they were going to be involved with them after their college careers to try and get them to rep Adidas professionally. It's a weird situation for sure. I can't wait until someone interprets this better than me.

Wow. Massive news, though I'm not surprised to see this news break because we know there are improprieties galore at top programs. Certainly going to be some long term implications born out of this...

What a day at the Convo.....Wow!

This is only the beginning. Just wait until the NCAA/FBI retroactively busts Larry Hunter for his recruitment of the LaFerla twins.

Eddie Munster gets away with it because the president and the board of regents at Louisville look the other way. The Wall Street Journal listed Louisville is the top money maker in Division I sports with their basketball team.

Auburn has been mentioned in this.

Who DIDN'T think the 5hit would hit the fan there within a few years of hiring a coach banned for show-cause? Anybody else get suspicious when a football school that hasn't done squat in hoops in forever suddenly gets a bunch of blue chip stud players to sign?

A few random comments on this:

1.According to an article in today's The Record, this investigation was done covertly.
The NCAA was not made aware of it until Tuesday.

2.According to the same article, these indictments are just the beginning.

3.As I understand it,convictions on Federal charges like these mean jail time.
That could provide incentive for the indicted individuals to turn "state's evidence".

4.It will be interesting to see how high up the coaching ladder this goes,as well as what other schools get dragged in.

5.This investigation seems to have dealt with BB,but I wonder if the DOJ also looked into similar issues with football ?

One of the Adidas employees was said to have "just recently left Nike for Adidas."

If that's true, I wonder if he did anything like this with Nike as well.

And, like other have said, these guys have not even starting talking in exchange for plea deals yet. May be time to get out the popcorn folks...

This. I think the right question to ask is, who is NOT involved? This investigation involves wiretaps, bank transfers, etc. There were lots of hands in this big cookie jar...how many of these hands will be caught red handed. Once the FBI calls you better fess up.

And will this cause a lot of the $$$ flowing into the AAU circuit to dry up. Recruiting could be very different from here on out.

The thing is, we all know basketball at this level is super greased up. As in when I say a coach has honeywells he can go to, usually is implied he has a guy who can arrange for X recruit to end up on their doorstep.

When this is said and done, I predict this is going to change the landscape....temporarily. Your big names are going to get caught up in this, as we have seen a few programs already getting caught up in it. The naive defense of "I didn't know" is not going to fly with a federal investigator in your face. So with that, the Pitino's of this world are going to be gone shortly. The guys who are up and coming are going to fill the same slots for illegal activities to take place and the cycle will re-start with a new brand of "squeaky-clean" image coaches.

My friend who works at adidas is worried this could eventually bring down the entire company. Probably far-fetched, people will still buy shoes, but still.

When you had boosters illegally funneling money, they banned those boosters. When the shoe corporations illegally funnel money, will they ban the shoe companies? Louisville is supposed to be getting paid $160 million by adidas.

Right now the media seems to be focused on those accepting bribes and kickbacks. But bribery is a two-way street.

UPDATE:
ESPN 100 forward E.J. Montgomery has decommitted from Auburn, sources confirmed to ESPN.

Montgomery, a 6-foot-10 power forward, originally committed to the Tigers last September.

Auburn assistant coach Chuck Person was one of the four college basketball coaches arrested on Tuesday in an FBI investigation into fraud and corruption. According to FBI documents, Person allegedly accepted bribes on multiple occasions, including one worth approximately $50,000, in order to steer Auburn players to Rashan Michel, a former NBA official who founded Thompson Bespoke Clothing, a custom clothier for athletes.

Montgomery, who attends Wheeler High School (Georgia), is ranked No. 31 in the ESPN 100 for the 2018 class. He averaged 14.1 points and 11.0 rebounds for the Atlanta Celtics on the Adidas Gauntlet circuit this past spring and summer.
