I wouldn't hire him the coach if I had to stake my job to it. That guy was the chief recruiter for those years of crappy recruiting. I blame him for the downfall a lot more than Matta. And from what I've heard, his rapport with personnel in athletic departments is not all that stellar, especially on interview circuit. If you want him, go get him otherwise he is not the answer that Columbus needs at the moment, for he will continue the downward trend developed. I think the biggest thing was that Matta needed to reboot his assistant coaching staff.

First call is to Brad Steven's agent.

Don't think he bites, but guarantee that's the first call.

Two things I saw in the Dispatch article that perplexed me:

1.
"His contract runs through the end of the 2019-20 season, with approximately $9 million in compensation during that time. He was paid a $625,000 bonus April 30 — less than two months after Smith offered Matta his public support — for still being employed."

That's a $625,000 AD screw up. Why have a check-in meeting on June 2 when the bonus kicks in on Apr. 30? Have the check-in on Apr. 28. That amount may be chump change to OSU, but it could fund an entire coaching staff at Ohio.

2.
"Matta has battled back issues since a botched surgery nearly a decade ago that have left him without the ability to raise his right foot, but he did not hesitate with a no when asked if his health impacted his ability to coach. He did say, however, that he thought that if he were healthy he would still be Ohio State’s coach."

What?

I wasn't serious when I posted that. Because I was kind hoping someone else would have said it first.

Dunk City HC is an under the radar option.

Mack played at X and is a Cincy kid. Raising kids presumedly near their grandparents. X in Big East and Cintas is best on campus arena in Ohio. I don't think he's leaving.

I couldn't care less what they do. But, if I'm an OSU alum and they ask me for money, I'd tell them to ask Matta or Smith. If they did push him out and it wasn't for health reasons, that's a big waste of coin.

I've seen coaches contracts and they should have a clause that says the contract is terminated upon disability. You can't perform the duties of your contract if you're disabled. Maybe they will reach a settlement amount on the remaining term. Because OSU is state school it will be disclosed.

And maybe they dismissed him before he couldn't coach so he could get paid. Any alum that gives money is crazy they way they throw it around.

Hence why my money comes to Athens versus Columbus......

Zero chance Brad Stevens takes such a large step down from
Celtics to Ohio state. One of the elite NBA franchises to an above average college program that is an after thought on campus and in town. Not gonna happen. Donovan interesting. Any OSU players now assistants in NBA?

The only way I see this having repercussions for us or other MAC schools is if the school who Ohio State poaches from takes a MAC coach at this late date. I still think Gene Smith (the OSU AD) had an Ace up his sleeve, otherwise he's really rolling the dice at this late date. The fact no search committee has been named makes think he has that Ace. I suppose if worse comes to worse, he names Chris Jent interim coach. However, that would really be a waste of a year and bound to upset the stomachs of people in Columbus who rarely give basketball much of a second thought.

If Celtics had gotten bounced round 1 this year, it would have been a possibility.

So nope, no Brad in Columbus.

Not sure they would have fired him. Perhaps but no indication. he would never leave on his own for Columbus. He's on board with coaching in NBA and the Celtic brass are very pleased with him. Plus he has ties back to Matta. Can't see OSU making this moving without someone in place. "National search" is a smoke screen. If it is NBA don't rule out Hoiberg. Chicago experience has been rocky. Holtzman makes sense from butler. Dark horse. Pat Kelsey at Winthrop. From Cincy.

Ohio State probably makes $600k on sales of Coca-Cola at a home football game. It was a strange, ill-timed coaching change, but they'll be okay.

Their wish list looks like a bit of a reach. I was a little surprised Steve Kerr wasn't on the list. The Finals will be over soon so they can call him this weekend.

They just finished parting ways with a coach who has back issues, and Kerr's may not be over.

Frank was paid by Nebraska for his first two or three years at OHIO, until the end of his Nebraska contract period. Nebraska paid Frank the difference between his OHIO salary and his Nebraska salary. That's sort of SOP as I understand it.

Plus, I have less problem with an AD throwing its money around when it doesn't take any subsidies from the students or academic side. If they're asking me to donate to the history department at the same time they're sinking 20 or 25 million dollars a year into the AD, that's a bigger problem for me.

Jeff Boals is a stand up guy and was well liked within the OSU Athletic Department. That being said, he's not the caliber of name they are looking for.

State school, but your are forgetting that the OSU Athletic Department is a non-profit entity that does NOT use state funding for operations. So, that contract is on their plate, not the tax payers or the students of OSU.
