We had the 2 teams in finals qisqualified from the National Championship game and no gmae played at 6th grade because both had overage members.

Teams we played against all year in IN played USSSA nationals skipping the AAU Nats because they had too many age exceptions. Teams like Mayo and Walker with D1 Greyhounds flaunted the rules competing with 07 till we found out years later OJ and Bill were older than 06 grads Greg Oden and Kevin Durant and were overage all those years, winning Nats but no one from opposing teams advanced the bond money required to challenge them.

Interesting that you observed the age exception lifted and participation drop.

No Mike Rice at this week's Hoop Group camp (he operates out of the New Jersey locale) but plenty of talent in my son's Albright College dorm this week. Right down the hall is a kid named Zion Harmon who as a 7th grader has 4 D1 offers including one from Missouri. My son played against him a couple of times when he was younger and playing up (1st grade, Zion 3rd grade). Zion has since re-classed and is the first 7th grader to play in the EYBL. Although to be fair he was a 14 year old 7th grader (my oldest son was a 14 year old 10th grader). But it definitely shows that people are paying attention to kids at younger grades.

Zion's path also shows the "everything for basketball" mentality so many parents are pushing right now. They are from my area (Zion was in my middle son's 4th grade class five years ago. He was then homeschooled the next year and re-classed. Two years ago he played basketball in Florida. Last year he transferred to a Tennessee Christian School (Lighthouse) and played for their high school team. I think the main reason they picked Tennessee was so he could play for We All Can Go (WACG), an elite AAU basketball program. Next year they are playing in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The rumors are that after that he will come back here and play at one of the elite high school programs in the DC area. It will be interesting to see what his longest stint is during his high school career.

I'm finding out that this is the reality today, but I just can't wrap my arms around recruiting grade school kids and paying that much attention to them.

Me neither. In fact, I would like to see the NCAA make a rule that no college coach can have contact with a prospect, let alone make an offer, before the kid is at least a junior, maybe even a senior, in high school.

Coaches aren't allowed to contact kids or send any recruiting information now until Junior year. They can send camp brochures and accept phone calls. And even if you initiate the phone call and leave a message they can't call you back. I think the only way they are allowed to talk to you other than if you call them is if you attend their camp. Borna or somebody else who have actually been through the process probably can give better information. Not sure how an actual offer works into the mix because that sure sounds like recruiting information to me.

Thanks for the information. Yes, it does sound strange can't contact but can make offer. Rules obviously need to be tightened up some.
