Wright State hires Uber successful South Dakota State coach Scott Nagy to take over for the dismissed Billy Donlon.

Oh BABY what a big time hire! Wonder if he and Saul are tight after all those years coaching against each other? Could this signal a home and home series with Wright State?

Can I ask why? In my opinion, they would be a more appealing game in terms of RPI and SOS than say, Tennessee State, Ark Pine-Bluff, UNC Asheville. Plus, OU Alumni can travel to Wright State.

Wright State has been a solid school when a part of our schedule, it's an easy and fun road trip and has a regional interest.

Morehead State would be a good regional rival to add; as would Dayton. But, playing Wright State doesn't excite me at all. I will admit I have a personal dislike of the place, which dates back to the earlier years of OU-COM and their stealing a number of our medical school recruits through various nefarious lies. This was circa 1978-80. Back in those days we routinely called the place, Wrong State.

They don't excite me THAT much, but I look at it from the angle of proximity to Athens and Alumni bases, as well as the idea that it's a better, more interesting game than a handful of other schools on the non-conf schedules over the years.

That said, the new hire might elevate their program, making them a game Ohio should play more often in Nov/Dec.

They've only won fewer than 19 games twice in the last 10 years. They are a solid program already.

I don't disagree Van. I think it should be an annual game if possible because of proximity and RPI alone.

I view Wright State the same as I view Ball State. Two programs with "State" in their names where I don't understand "Wright" or "Ball." Pretty sure I've googled both at some point but can recall neither. My head is too filled with useless Ohio basketball recruiting knowledge.

I remember playing Wright State in the bracketbuster at some point. I remember their message board acting like their student section and home-court atmosphere was in someway comparable to the Convo. I laughed, and since then I haven't really respected their program.

I've seen crazier things happen.

Kent doesn't make sense with State, but at least Kent is the town name. Ball and Wright are not geographically relevant.

The Ball Jar company began in Muncie and I believe mr ball helped found the university.

Wright State is near WPAFB and very near the birthplace of Aviation. I think those guys were kind of famous.

I guess those are superior names to Dayton's 2nd University and Teachers College.

That is close. The Indiana Normal School started around 1900. It was in and out of money problems till the Ball Brothers intervened and with some political manipulation and shuffling (not opening that subject up as it involves Indiana Republicans and their support of education) around they donated the school they had essentially "bought" to the state and put it under the admin of the Indiana State Normal School in Terra Haute (now the jr institution to the one in Bloomington). This all happened in the mid teens and the name Ball got attached.

FOr many years the Balls were very involved in the U and many believed too much so. When one of the young Ball women got booted from a sorority at one point about the time just before my mom was enrolled all the sorority houses disappeared from the U. Still do not have houses though the sororities continue to exist as organizations within the dorm structue. Just one example of how the Ball family wishes guide the U. Fascinating little soap opera that has everything from Mafia hits in the 60s over the control of drug traffic on campus to how the admin reports to the family. Certainly adds to the division between town and gown. Since Ball Corp shut down the glass works and sold to St GObain and then moved their aerospace arm (things like producing the tiles on the bottom of the space shuttle) to Colorado they have had less influence on the U.

Wright is where my sis got her degree...lot less drama but indeed movers and shakers involved as OCF intimated.

No, Wright State's name makes perfect sense since Dayton is the birthplace of aviation and Orville and Wilbur were born and raised there and invented the first airplane there. In terms of Kitty Hawk, as one Ohio representative said after a North Carolina representative made an impassioned and lengthy floor speech about that first flight during its centennial year, "I see things haven't changed much in a 100 years, North Carolina is still supplying the wind and Ohio the brains."

Wright State nonetheless, IMHO, is kind of a sketchy place. It's medical school was hodgepodged together as a result of Senator Robert Byrd's efforts to create a medical school at Marshall University. Long story made short: Byrd attached to the VA appropriations bill a provision that the feds would heavily support the creation of new medical schools in cities that had state universities and VA hospitals. He said publicly that Nixon didn't like this provision but would not dare veto it, and put the whole VA in jeopardy. Byrd was correct. After the bill passed Bryd, along with Congressman Heckler and Governor Moore personally delivered Marshall's application to the VA. Wright State used this same bill to get start up funding for its medical school, even though the whole thing was opposed by many state officials.

Truly appreciate the insight OCF but I suspect the good people of Henry and Wayne Counties in INdiana would take umbrage with your comment. I pass by the Wilbur Wright Birthplace on my way to and from work on occasion. http://www.wwbirthplace.com/history/4546377956

THe med school is indeed a strange one in curruculae and it's history but they have one of the BEST willed body programs and interments I have ever seen. The families of the donors all come together for an interdenominational service and are bussed to a cemetary that was there before the U where they have the ashes buried with a stone that has all the names of the donors on it. Very moving and the current class of med students that are learning from the bodies are very involved inthe planning, days activities and ceremonies.

Okay, only Orville was BORN in Dayton, borna. I appreciate the correction. Always like to be accurate. My basic point, directed at another poster, was that naming an institution in Dayton after the Wright brothers was not all that strange. This poster seemed perplexed about the name.

In terms of the willed body program, the one at Ohio University is quite good and has some of the features you describe as part of the Wrong State one.

My father was a willed body at Ohio 2004...kind of familiar with the process and it has no similarity. My mom will be as well.

Josh Pastner leaving Memphis for Georgia Tech. Even though it's a better conference, I'm not sure if this is a step up or step down. Memphis fans were close to rioting anyway, probably a good thing for him to leave.

Wow! Just looked it up because I was so surprised:

EDIT: Check out the buyout money being paid to Gregory and Hewitt still. G'Tech will be paying THREE head coaches this year.

That makes the firing of Gregory and hiring of Pastner even more puzzling. It's not like Pasnter has done much since Cal left.
