the nba draft coverage always gets me excited for the next Bobcat hoops season.
I can't recall knowing as little about an upcoming roster, I guess five freshman and two transfers will do that to a fella! here is my uneducated thoughts, as of late June. I'd love your feedback on what our rotation might look like. I'd assume Saul would like to go 8-10 deep.

Setty- lone Sr. big motor. hustle. seems like he willbe a strong leader.

Wadly- totally baffles me. hope he can provide 10 minutes a night as he is now an upperclassman. I hope he isn't Marin Bota.

Tony- incredible soft hands. anticipate home getting better each of next two seasons. my gut thinks March madness berth his Sr season.

Kaminski- haven't seen him play. look forward to having a zone buster on the perimeter. I can't wait to see him and Simmons play together.

Harley - glad he got some PT as a frosh. hope he gains strength and maturity.

R Taylor - love this kid. hearing he played through mono last season explains a lot. I look for a strong season from him.

Laster - hope he matures into a Ric Johnson type.

Simmons - I think he might be THE man to get our team back into the tourney.

here is where I start struggling. What will the freshman impact be this season?

Dartis - gotta expect a dozen minutes a night to spell Simmons. Right?

D Taylor - 6' 10" height would help inside depth. redshirt candidate? or will he see time on the court?

Dozier - big. got nothing else. can he spell Campbell?

Block - big off guard.

Gollon - tall off guard

I don't remember Jim Christian or Saul Phillips being quoted as saying "he has NBA skills."

Coach has mentioned that there is a core of four guys who are the clear top: Tony, Ryan, Kenny, and Jaaron. They will likely be starters. Who comes next will likely be one from the group of Mike, Khari, Treg, or Wadly. Wadly didn't look half bad when he started at the beginning of last year, but I think he only starts if Kenny can be a complete wing player at times. Any of the other three would probably relieve Kenny of being a ball handler on offense.

By the time conference play comes, if not before, I fully expect that at least two of the freshmen will be playing major minutes. It wouldn't surprise me to see Dartis starting at the 2, with Ryan Taylor at the 3.

I also anticipate that Block and Dozier will be playing quite a few minutes. One thing is for sure, the competition for PT will be intense this year!

What makes you say Dozier has nothing else? I remember seeing something about him being a very good shooter when he was being recruited.

Once his knee heals, I really expect Doug Taylor to develop into a beast in the paint. Whether that is this year, or in the future obviously remains to be seen.

Book this now - Dartis will play a lot more than 10-12 minutes a game, and will be a lot more than just a guy to spell Simmons.

I agree with this. Correct me if I am wrong, but Wadley had some health issues last season, right? I thought he showed improvement early on, he has good quickness for his size, insane length...I think if he is healthy he can be a major contributor.

Yes - Saul said at the Columbus Caravan he was fighting something last year and never really got back to full health. I think Wadley could be a real presence on defense if healthy. The bonus this year is that he can play hard without foul trouble being a team concern at that position. So much depth.

Not to speak for him, but I think he means that he doesn't know anything more about Dozier, not that he offers nothing but his size.

I don't think we've ever had a recruit come to Athens in the last 20 years that has less written about him than Dozier.

Will be interesting. I agree that Wadly is an enigma, especially after what we saw from him early last season. Perhaps his injury explains some of this mystery. I hope he can stay healthy this year.

I'm not sure what to think about Treg's role. I LOVE him as an energy guy off the bench and I think that's probably where he's most valuable. He loves being the bad guy and while I think he'll get plenty of mins next year, I don't think he should start.

Right now I see Simmons, Campbell, Kaminski, and Ryan Taylor starting. Laster gets valuable minutes off the bench as a glue guy, Dartis gets mins, and a few from Block?

The two wild cards for me are absolutely Wadly and Harley. I am fascinated to see what we get out of those two. They've both flashed potential but have battled lots of injuries. Can they stay healthy? Has Harley grown into his ridiculous 6'8" frame? Has Wadly continued his physical maturation? (he seemed to be in awesome shape at the start of last season).

With the two impact transfers coming aboard, nice returning role players, and a good/diverse crop of freshman...I'm ready for some Bobcat hoops.

my apologies to all re: Dozier, I was typing entry on cel and it got a little choppy and sloppy.

I meant to say I knew nothing about him except he is a big.

Per SP - in order of expected impact & therefore time (full game impact total/stats per mins played)

Simmons
Kaminsky
Campbell
R Taylor
??????

I doubt Dartis ends up #5 on this list. I expect he makes a good contribution, but Simmons expected to be a performer that makes even a Hot/Great prospect like Dartis to have a challenge to have a huge breakthrough season - his minutes and opportunity to do that will be limited by Simmons. I expect that to happen his Soph year. His Frosh season is his opportunity to show what he has for OHIO the Next 3 Yrs when he delivers in the minutes he gets.

Very true, and odd considering he's a 3* guy.

No need to apologize IMO, I just wondered where the thoughts were coming from.

I expect Kaminski to start and be a huge factor for us. I'm just not sure how we use him. If he is more of a wing than a post guy, that'll change what other guys we need time from off the bench.

In addition the Dartis, I think Gavin Block could see big time as a freshman. He is a great shooter and played in a high school system similar to what I envision Saul trying to run. As far as the other freshman, very little has been said about both Gollon and Dozier. Unsure what to expect. Doug Taylor is coming off a major knee injury so that may delay his timeline to play big minutes.

I've seen crazier things happen.

Here's some insight into the incoming class from Jason Arkley. Some good information here.

Here is my favorite part:

"Taylor didn’t take part in the team portions, but I liked the way the other four acclimated themselves in the basics of Ohio’s offensive system during their first practice. Good cutting, lots of ball movement. And it didn’t seem forced. It seems clear that this group of guys was recruited with Phillips’ style and motivations in mind.

On campus and getting into the flow. Good article from Ark. Gollon more refined than Block will see PT first. Dartis looking pretty ready to get some PT from reports. It's gonna be interesting to see this come together. Got some changes in the locker room. Addition by subtraction.

I find the size of Dozier to be interesting because I somewhat expected him to be a little thicker given a year of post grad time. I'm glad to hear Gollon looks fluid as a scorer in practice. I'm really excited to see this group develop!

Interesting. Based on the videos I would have guessed the opposite. Another reason I'm not going to make too much money as a scout.

I am with you on that....surprised me when I heard it after searching articles and tapes from my seemingly eternal horizontal position this last winter...... Excited about Dartis and Simmons, want to hear more about Ellis over time here.

Really anxious to see if Treg takes on a mantle of leadership and sets a tone that guides the team or if he fades as younger guys step in and take over as the driving force for what Saul wants to put in...

Lots of questions and not much in the way of info these months. Have not been on the recruiting trail much yet this year. Info is not flowing very freely but everyone is there and the team is working...

bummer.

at least this helps add a 2nd recruit to next year's class, balances things just a bit.

This pretty much finishes the job of making next years team completely different from last years team. Pretty much starting over now for sure. Which may be a good thing, considering last years record.
