Fiami becomes the next school to its upgrading its broadcast capabilities to meet ESPN standards. Per the new contract agreement the 12 teams in the MAC have until 2017 to invest in the equipment upgrades.

NIU, CMU and Buffalo were the first 3 schools to upgrade last summer. There was rumor that more then 3 schools would make the upgrade this summer with announcements coming in June. Has anyone heard anythin about Ohio being part of this year's upgrade or not? I'm not going to be happy if we have to wait another year.

I was told by a member of the athletic department that funds were still being raised, as ESPN only covers a portion of the project. Sounds like this year is off the table, but next year is definitely in play.

What kind of dollars are we talking about in the funds being raised department here?

So are they just starting at the schools with the lowest attendance and working their way up?

I'm sorry. I don't remember the specific numbers and it would be irresponsible to throw out guesses.

One point I do remember is that the costs involved go beyond equpiment -- the university will have to create and fill several positions to produce the broadcasts.

My understanding was that when ESPN reopened our contract early last year and added $24M on to the final 3yrs ('14,'15,'16) of a 10yr $14M contract it was because the extra $24M on the old deal would be used for everyone to get up to speed by 2017 as required per the agreement. $24M / 12 schools = $2M/school which is what I heard the avg cost would be.

So why are a lack of funds holding us back? We should have been the first ones to be upgraded.

A friend of mine is a faculty representative on the committee that's working on this project. I haven't talked to him in six months or so about it. I will try do that when I have the time and find out the status. When I last discussed it with him he seemed to think that they were moving ahead at a fairly fast pace, perhaps that's changed.

At least this is another away game where we can count on solid viewing.

EMU becomes the 6th MAC school to announce the ESPN upgrade. Jut for reference, here's a list of all the schools ranked by home attendance last year-

'14-'15 Attendance:

6,607 Ohio
5,057 Toledo
3,719 Buffalo ESPN
3,247 Akron
3,091 Kent St
2,883 WMU
2,821 Ball St
2,708 CMU ESPN
2,027 BGSU ESPN
1,151 NIU ESPN
1,112 Miami ESPN
801 EMU ESPN

Yes, let's get our worst supported teams on the high quality broadcast upgrade first because that will make the conference look real swell.

Guys, every school was given the same amount of money from ESPN when this deal was signed. It's up to the individual schools to raise the rest of the necessary funds to complete the upgrades. It's not on the MAC or ESPN that we're not getting the upgrade this year.

Just a thought but probably the reason OHIO isn't the first to receive the upgrades is because the school is presently working to upgrade its seats and scoreboard in the Convo first before putting the new camera setup in.

It soothes my butthurt to consider that Ohio has a relatively competent online broadcast already available.

But just once I'd like us to get something before everybody in Division II gets it.
