FiveThirtyEight.com put together a list of which coaches outperformed/underperformed in the NCAA Tournament based upon their teams' seeds. Some interesting names on the list. Now, part of me says that the guys who underperformed could be very good coaches who got the most out of not very talented team in the regular season. Then, they were found out in the NCAA Tourney. Or maybe they just stink (but not too bad because they did get a team to the NCAA Tournament), I'm not smart enough to figure that out.

Interesting. Maybe I'll take this into account next year if I fill out a bracket.

Not surprised to see Rick Barnes so far down that list. I never understood the love he continued to get for so long in Austin. I understand Texas is a football school, but with the talent he's had around him he has grossly underachieved.

Some awfully big names there at the bottom.

Just wondering but how do you get 46.2 wins?

That's expected future wins. Calipari probably has 47 wins and a 60% chance of winning the last two.

I guess vacated wins count.

Unless you exclude the whole season from the sample, it would not compute fairly. Those seasons where he has vacated tournament wins, he would be credited as losing in the first round when his team was expected to advance to some late round, making it seem that he coached poorly or underperformed in the tournament, which wasn't the actual issue.

Interesting table.

Hard for coaches like K, Bill Self to get much traction above zero since Kansas and Duke always seem to be 1 seed. Because of great recruiting and succesful regular seasons it is hard for some coaches to get wins they weren't "supposed" to win.

Definitely one piece of the puzzle though. However, Izzo still has only one 1 championship and is 1-8 against Duke so not sure what this means for saturday's matchup. I'll take Duke because of more talented basketball players.
