THought this time had passed but I am all for the BIG shooting themselves in the proverbial foot.

http://www.diamondbackonline.com/news/article_02376858-b8...

Not sure if it will get any traction or not.

I like the idea of redshirting them so they don't lose a year of eligibility. But it would have to apply to all NCAA D1 schools. Otherwise, the schools/conferences not on board with it would have a recruiting advantage. I don't see Tenfinity adopting it on their own.

Hmmm...If the P5 schools were to make frosh ineligible, simultaneously you could see the P5 moving to increase the number of scholarships it awards.

I expect this idea to die a very quick/quiet death. Matta & AD Smith are already quoted in the Columbus papers as having an ill effect on recruiting. Also though if they want to shoot themselves in the foot, I'm definitely here willing to watch & enjoy.

Big Ten-teen has had their share of stupid ideas (IE Leaders/Laggards), but they seem to correct their poor ideas relatively quickly. Fail fast, which not many entities can do. I'm betting they'll turn this into nothing, or somehow an advantage relatively soon.

The disadvantages of living in Columbus. While the tO$U folks speak the media all takes the word as gospel and the public in the shadow of the Bucknuts jumps on board.

I too, think this will fail but there is a bigger groundswell out there than folks outside the Buckeye centric media zone believe. Sucks to have such a narrow view shoved down your throat by the Ohio St media. There are a number of big conference folk who see the Iowa State AD POV. It will ultimately come down to how this affects the bottom line and the marketability of the product NOT the academic effectiveness. No doubt in my mind the kids would benefit from an extra year and the freshman ban. No doubt that the rigors of travel and daily practice affects their schoolwork. No doubt that the number of kids who actually are going pro are only a decimal point of the players that would benefit. My kid said from day 1 he would have loved a red shirt year...and thought long and hard Groce's first year when he had a shoulder Biceps tear.

My goodness.

For the very best players, these conferences or the NCAA will be delaying their ability to make millions of dollars. Millions.

Why?

So the coaches and ADs and presidents can make millions of dollars.

My goodness.

Actually reading the article the AD was saying he wanted them to go ahead and go. GO make your millions. Don't act like school is necessary, git on out.

Hmmmm. But by redshirting them, they can't play, which means they are losing out on an ability to perform and thus get drafted. I just don't like refusing to let a kid make the decision.

Meanwhile, the Boston Red Sox just gave a 19 year old Cuban a $30 million signing bonus. Nobody (including me) seems upset about his academic standing....

The more interesting proposal that I heard (I think from an SEC president) was to give players five years of eligibility and to lose the redshirts. It doesn't really cost the school anything more (they're paying for the fifth year through the redshirt), allows teams to gel a little longer, and I think it would benefit the smaller schools. Smaller schools seem to have more success with senior-laden teams, teams that have gelled and are able to challenge younger, more talented teams from bigger conferences.

Well, we all know how bad the Cuban education system is.

Depends on what metrics you want to use.

Excuse me, sir, we don't use metric here.
