I said a couple of years ago that Stevie isn't a 27-32 minute guy. Really liked his energy coming off the bench behind DJ. He's going to have to really step up if this team wants to do some damage.

I'm not surprised, and I guess I'm also not that alarmed like some of you. FGCU is a good team, projected to be an NCAA tourney team with a pair of experienced and talented senior guards. We went into a hostile environment with two freshmen and a soph center with very limited experience, expecting them all to play big minutes and roles. Early in the year in that situation, I expected a tough night and I do not think it's a sign of bad things to come. We lost to a good team on the road, get over it and get ready for the next one.

Sincere props to whatever it is FGCU is doing to pack that house on a Wednesday in November. The atmosphere seemed to be in late season form.

Those who think we need to put a leash on the bigs getting out and shooting threes have not been listening to what our coach says and/or don't understand the tenets of #SaulBall. Get on board, because you're going to keep seeing it. If Tony Campbell wasn't supposed to be in that spot taking the first three threes that he missed, he wouldn't have been in the game to make the fourth.

I would add that the bigs were the only ones that were actually square to the basket when they shot the threes. There should never ever be an off-balance or contested three taken when there is still 20 seconds left on the shot clock. And our ball movement was so slow that their bigs were able to keep our bigs from catching the ball anywhere near the basket. The man receiving the pass should know where his teammates are before the ball gets to him. We aren't very hard to defend when we play like we did last night.

Didn't catch the game last night, but from what I've read it just looks like the offense wasn't doing what it's designed to do. It's Game 2 guys, 3 if you count Marietta. It's a process that might take a while. I don't think Saul ever said he was gonna come in here a be a magician and take us to the Final Four from Day One. Patience is a virtue this year.

I understand what you are saying Van as The concept of off balance vs set and ready to shoot is what I perceive you are getting at.

I have seen the saying "square to shoot" or "square the feet" many times on a few boards recently. Lets put that to rest. Anyone who wants to understand shooting should view this as if they were a student of the game. It does change how you watch guys taking shots.

I don't think anyone is saying the season is a lost cause. It was just a really bad game mentally by us. I agree that it is a process. Nick Kellogg's presence was sorely missed last night and I don't mean his shooting. We need someone to step into his leadership role. FGCU got it from their Seniors. We get down by 10 and toss up a horrible off-balance contested three early in the shot clock. Their hobbled Senior PG then drives and dishes for a wide open three and that's all she wrote.

His game concerned me a little last night, but I'm generally with those in the it's early, and it's a work in progress camps. Khari has only practiced for a couple weeks, and we've not yet even seen Thomas, who was expected to be a key veteran role player.

3 games in (including Marietta). No need to panic yet, but we HAVE to make adjustments. WAYYYYY too much 1-1 street ball going on out there. We need to set up our offense. Ndour needs to get involved. I like the idea of posting him up lower and getting it to him quicker. He has a really hard time creating his own shot from anywhere outside of 8 feet. Bigs chucking up 3's shows laziness to me. They don't want to get in there and mix it up with other bigs and just want to throw it up from beyond the perimeter. I still trust in Saul. Interesting point. The only shooter I can remember who squares his feet almost all the time, or maybe it's just his form that's so pure that makes it look that way, is Ray Allen. He has the most fluid motion I've ever seen.

Guys, we all know that in the MAC only March really counts. Let's just chalk this one up as the one that lost our at large bid and get over it! We sucked big time.

Yep, we could go 30-1 the rest of the way, have a top 25 RPI, and the selection committee would still point to that mid-November loss to one of the top teams in its respective conference.

Have no idea about the gym, but I'll guess Muncie Central. ;-)

Thanks for posting the video on the squaring up myth. It gave me some personal pointers. Never too old to learn.

Muncie Central is so much bigger. This gym is famous. Still play one game a year there with all the outgoing seniors. Usually a show and tix are few and hard to come by Oden, COnley, harangody, and a number of Indiana all stars and college stars played their last game in Indiana there.

Good to know the old dogs is still open to new tricks. Sometime when I am in Athens I have no preblem getting you in shorts and soing a shooting work out (abbreviated and slowed down of course) to make you a star in the sunday am game

That would be a bucket list item to go see a game actually played there. That's incredible they still do that.

Completely agree. It also led to a transition opportunity for FGCU. You just don't expect to see a senior PG do that. It seemed to take the wind out of our sails.

Weird, no one was complaining about the shots when they were going in against Appy State. Eliminate the bad shots, shoot the wide open ones. I have no problem with that. Campbell has a nice looking stroke, I don't mind him shooting the occasional open look.

I agree with bigtilly on this. Our bigs need to be shooting perimeter shots if it comes in the flow of the offense.

I agree we need to share the ball more and take better shots, but in a motion offense, I don't think you "set up the offense" as if you're running set plays. The success of the motion offense comes from players making right decisions on the floor depending on what the defense is doing.

Well..I guess what I meant by "set up the offense" is to get guys to move without the ball. There is way too much standing around watching. 5 assists last night? Stevie didn't even have one. We've got to move.. We look lazy right now.

Sounds like a good deal -- but it's Saturday AM game that I'm shooting for (pardon the bad pun). Also, play Tuesday and Thursday evenings once we get back to 7:00 p.m. starts, right now it's like 9:00 p.m., which is just too late for me to make a regular appearance. Darm AMS kids think they own the gym or something. ;-) Your offer also means you are getting better, which is very good news! :-)

Sincere question here from a basketball novice: through the first three games, I haven't really seen a significant difference in our zone regarding ball movement/screens/etc in the Bo Ryan template that I expected.

Am I just stupid and not nuanced enough to see the change that is actually present, or am I correct in my interpretation that we have yet to see a significant implementation of a new scheme?

And thanks in advance for no personal attacks on my BB IQ.

our guys fought their butts off last night and I didn't see any finger pointing or bad body language when we got down big either. Shot selection was questionable at times but only because they missed, its hard to take a shot out of context, I understand why they sometimes take a quick 3 when they are trying to change the momentum. Its what we loved/hated about DJ.

Frankly, this is exactly what we needed this early in the season, getting punched in the mouth and embarrassed can be a good thing in the long run.
