To add to that, we saw good teams that had literally everything but a good PG struggle in the late 90's when they had Stonerook, Adell, Hunter, Flomo, Esterkanmp, etc. and Corey Reed/Thomas Stephens were the PGs.

Assuming the 2s and 3s recruited by Christian actually show up and stay this summer, we may be fine at those positions.  On paper at least, they sound very good.  What we need desperately is a PG who will be eligible next season.  Someone who can give us a solid 15 mins a game and prepare to take the reins the next season.

Absolutely.  That was a huge frustration.  Never really understood why we couldn't get a PG that matched our front line in talent.  We had a high major front line and a low major backcourt.

He hinted that the direction would be towards his guys, rather than anyone on the Ohio staff right now.

Jason is a great young coach, very solid recruiter(hit MN, WI and IA hard while at NDSU) and of course he has spent a season in the MAC at Toledo so that should be an asset for Saul since he knows the conference a little bit.

Fargo, often coaches focus on staff as well - guard play, big men, defense, etc.  Did Ryan or Kemp have a particular area of expertise/value?  FYI - we have a number of young big men - so will need focus there.

Fargobison:  Can't tell ya how much we appreciate your input.  Hope you stick around and post regularly on our site.  I'm going to join your site too because I'm so impressed with the North Dakota State program and I have been impressed for a number of years now.

I believe Will's area is defense. I can't remember Kemp's, I do know he made a huge impact in recruiting. He helped bring in Taylor Braun, he has from what I have heard a ton of recruiting contacts.

Coach - S Phillips
Asst - W Ryan
Asst - J Kemp
Asst - ???
Graduate Asst - ???
Dir. Basketball Ops - ???

Is this right?  Are there more "coaching" slots available?

I hope Fuss gets the last true assistant gig.  Did he mention anything about his staff in the press conference?

He mentioned Ryan and Kemp and said he would consider current staff or others he was already familiar with. He did say his first two hires would probably indicate how the third position would be filled, so that led me to believe it would not be Fuss.

He also mentioned his recruiting base would be Ohio, FWIW.

Not only OHIO, he also specifically talked about looking locally, too.  Now in any given year there may not be a D-1 player in SEO worth a scholarship, but if you keep your eyes pealed there are quality athletes every few years that should be considered.  Seems we let a good SEO kid "escape" to Akron not long ago.  Recruiting these local players will do wonders for attendance over a period of time.  This is the kind of thing a coach does who is looking to build a program not just a resume for the next job.  I'm excited!

Edit: I think Phillips is the perfect fit for OHIO.  Did I say I'm excited?

Look but don't leap.  I liked what he said, "every kid in Ohio should want to come here."

Then it is up to the program to decide who to take.  If the kid from Athens, Ohio can ball as well as the kid from Athens, Ga - fine.  Otherwise take the kid from Georgia.  If the kid from Philadelphia, PA is better than the the kid from New Philadelphia, Ohio - gotta take the kid from the east.  That said, he is right.  There is a ton of talent in Ohio that should be more actively and heavily pursued.

I think we all agree - if there is a kid from Ohio that lands at a MAC school, if we wanted him, he should be at Ohio.  Period.

I like this line of thinking. I really do. But the reality is that a HS recruit who wants to play in Ohio has multiple options. Even more so than in WI, MN or ND. While I'd like to think that a HS kid who wants to play in Ohio, would select Ohio first, there are quite a few other good in-state teams that are enticing. If anyone can make OHIO THE UNIVERSITY, I think Saul can.

David Richman of NDSU will not be coming to Ohio, named their head coach today.

Getting Jason Kemp on board with Coach Phillips is a double win, because now Totes McGotes has to replace him.

This hire is a gift that keeps on giving.

So in the last three months, we've taken Toledo's bowl slot, their quarterbacks coach and a basketball assistant. Can we please beat them in football someday to ice this cake?

Could it be that Saul Phillips believes locally extends up RT 33?
