This one reminded me quite a bit of the Marshall game last year. We were out of sync offensively most of the game, a lot of it the early result of Hassan Whiteside or Benson blocking everything in sight. We had a late run to make it look closer than it really was, but in reality the outcome was never really in doubt for the last 30 minutes or so. Plus this game marked the season debut of Washington, like Marshall did for Bassett last year, with both completely out of the flow from the get go.
On the bright side, we followed that Marshall loss with one of our best non-conference performances of the year, albeit a one point loss to Tulsa. Hopefully we can bounce back quickly from this one too. Ultimately, though, I fear that the expectations for this squad were way too high. While we have three post players each capable of putting up big numbers, none is reliably consistent. We have no one currently capable of creating his own shot, and we are relying way too heavily on raw freshmen for our backcourt rotation. This team will eventually be good, but it is going to be a much slower process than the expectations would have led one to believe. This team is still one to two years away from being the dominant force we are all hoping for.
