Lets slow down on putting Gary Trent on the sidelines...yes he was a good player for the Bobcats and played in the NBA....but that doesn't mean it would translate to a good coach.

Does he have any coaching background at all?

He has not coached at all to this point, but he did say when he was in Athens that he has taken the NBA's training course on coaching. It's quite obvious he wants to get into coaching. He said then that he thought in particular he would make a good college coach because, based on the background he came from, he could relate to any problems young people have.

Although having him back in Athens would bring a lot of attention to the program, and he has shown an interest in coaching, I think some healthy scepticism is warranted.  Coaching at this level is a 60 hour per week job.  It entails long hours spent on recruiting and breaking down film.  I have seen many a coach work very late hours on the job.  I remains to be seen if he has the patience for that, though I would love to be proven wrong.

Having said that, he is GARY TRENT!  I'm sure the job is his if he wants it.

With Trent - it could be more about pride, and Boals, than $ - It has to be.

Does anyone think Pat Knight deserves a look? His record at Texas Tech was not spectacular.  He's improved a little at Lamar.  I wondered if he might be ready to come into his own and might be ready for a better gig.  However, he has the same temper issues as the old man, and he hasn't really impressed that much at Lamar.  So to answer my own question, in finest Monroe fashion, I think the answer is no -- he should not be on the short list.

I love the idea of Trent on the sidelines.

The greatest bobcat of all time (G-BOAT?) working with the bigs, how cool would that be. As we talk about building a program its important we connect the past with the present and the future. Trent is an important bridge to our past. Most of the guys on the team didn't know who Trent was until his jersey was hung, I'm guessing Ric didn't know the significance when he picked #20 either.

Trent would be good with recruiting too, he can talk about going from OHIO to the NBA and would be living proof that it can be done. I think there's a lot of upside to it beyond his effectiveness at coaching to at least give it consideration.

I like it.

I agree with most on Trent - Why not give it a shot?  I think the players could learn a lot from him in many areas, but most importantly being a freaking BEAST in the paint.  Players nowadays really appreciate being taught by a man who has been there and done it in the successful manner in which they strive for.  And he would be a modest salaried assistant with limited responsibilities.  Forget the huge added bonus of being a proud and beloved alum...bringing in an NBA player of his background would be a great addition and add to the mix of coaches.  No risk, high potential reward.

Re: Trent and coaching experience ... some of the articles written around the time of his jersey ceremony mentioned that he coaches his son's AAU team (not sure if you all consider that "real" coaching experience or not) and he also said that he is interested in coaching at the collegiate level.

Actual in-game coaching experience aside, he's been working as a counselor for at-risk youths for some time now, and after he spoke to OUr team, they made comments about how inspiring he was and really motivated them. Groce talked about how impressed he was with Trent's growth as a person. Sounds like a great guy to have in the locker room with the team and working out with them, a resource for them to go to when they're feeling troubled or want to talk about life after college basketball. He just seems like he could be a real asset.

And he loves Ohio and Athens ... so many people want to leave and here's one who wants to come back.

A lot of threads contain a criteria that they're thinking about when selecting a new coach that I think is beyond dumb...

"It means he might stick around OHIO for a while" (or something like that)

I've seen it as something have said about Boals (who I think has other merits that make him a good candidate) and I've seen it as a reason that people like the youth of Pitino. We shouldn't be looking for a coach who wants to be the next Mark Few, and stay in Athens forever. We should be looking for a coach who will be the best possible candidate to coach this team next year and moving forward. Build on what Groce started, continue building this program.

It'd be nice if Groce were still here, but we're in a much better place as a program if our coaches are going to places like Illinois when they leave instead of places like Bryant.

+2

I asked this but it got buried. What do we want in our new coach? A better coach or a coach that could be just as good as Groce but more likely to stay?

My green colored glasses think Boals hands down. But what if there is Coach X that is better than Boals, but is more likely to leave ASAP for a bigger job.

What if we hire Boals and he does decent with next year's team, maybe make the tournament and maybe win one game. BUT what if Coach X could take next year's team to special levels, run rough shot over the MAC where heading into the MAC tournament we are an at-large team even if we lose in our first MAC tourney game. And What if that Coach X has a much better chance of leading this team to the Final 4 type season... BUT, after that he leaves for the next job.

Who do you want? Coach X or Boals...

What if Coach X basically knows its one and done and we go back a couple of steps? What if Boals while not taking next year's team into special levels, is more likely to keep building this team to be even better in the future?

So many what ifs, thank god it isn't my choice.

Athena is right...Trent has the experience to be on the bench as an assistant.  He's worked with kids and has to know the game given his background.  Seems sorta like the manning thing at Kansas...until he got the Tulsa job!

Based on the little I know, I don't think I'd make a criteria of "will they stay in Athens."  It's obvious that the type of rising/high level coach that we're striving to attract simply isn't wired in that manner.    While I'm surrounded by friends who sacrifice money/power/job for things such as not moving their family too often; living near family; friendship in a community/church; childrens school/friends; quality of life, etc... it's apparent this isn't typical for those in the coaching profession.  It's in these coaches blood, it''s what all those in their profession do and it's what their mentors do/did.  Like the Jefferson's song, "movin' on up."

So I wouldn't put too much stock into how long they say they'll be around, or if they're alumni.  And not to  take a knock of JG, but jus an illustration of these guys' wiring.  One week they're screaming "We are Ohio,"  preaching brotherhood, families decked out in green and within 6 days they've got another color on and saying it's a dream come true.  Good people, just wired differently.

I was reading ESPN or CBS Sportsline, or some national sports website the other day - I can't remember, it was during the peak of Groce Watch 2012.

Anyways, I noticed a ton of college basketball fans (who obviously have never been to BobcatAttack before) say that they thought John Pelphrey was going to be the next coach.

We have never discussed Pelphrey at all on our board. Maybe because we are so fixated on Jeff Boals.

We all agree Boals is a great candidate, but all of our threads are getting boring because 90 percent of us agree and the other 10 percent are predicting Jim Schaus is going to make a surprise hire (this claim is made without any logical reasoning).

So, lets open the door for the discussion on Pelphrey?

Are we too small for him?

Or does everyone here looking for an assistant or Groce 2.0?    (don't get me wrong, I want Boals - just want other candidates to be discussed)

Re: Trent - Assistants need to start somewhere - so why not here.  Prior to being a college assistant they can cut their teeth on the HS circuit - like at say, Jackson, Ohio or Schlage High School in Kansas City.  Or they can gain knowledge playing in the NBA.

Schaus is attending the NCAA annual meetings that coincide with the Final Four this weekend and he is looking to find a coach within 7-10 days.  That should put us with a new coach by next Friday. Boals is obviously in Nola due to OSU playing but per Twitter we know that Dustin Ford and Aaron Fuss are also in Nola for the Final Four and have been there since about Tuesday, before Groce left officially. Big things will happen this weekend that nobody knows about in Nola and when is back on Tuesday we should have some top candidates. Schaus hired a great coach in Marshall at Wichita St before he left to come to OHIO and obviously he brought in Groce which turned this program around.

I have all the faith in the world that Schaus will hire the perfect coach for the job!

Per DJ's twitter page, he has expressed that he will leave if the right coach is not hired. I think he is hinting that he wants Dustin Ford as the new coach because he will keep that green light that he has had since he's been here.  That being said, he is only one palyer on the team but he is the QB that makes everything happen.  Walt, Keely, and Baltic have expressed they aren't going anywhere even though Walt was only here because of Groce in the first place.

It looks like Ford and Boals are the top 2 candidates right now just for obvious reasons and connections to the program.  Avid fans of the program notice that during games, Ford was the main contact with Groce and made most of the decisions it seemed in the huddle if it wasn't coming straight from Groce. I don't think Ford wants to go anywhere yet and even if he doesn't get the HC job I think he will stay another year to help transition this team with the new coach, especially if its Boals.

But for now everything is speculation so I am going to sit back and relax, watch the 4 best teams in the country play for the national title and we will see what happens Tuesday morning.

PS - I was a big part of the program during the 4 years Dustin Ford coached at Jackson High School when he first came out of school at OU and I will advocate that he would be a perfect choice for the job at OU and he would keep this program striving for more.

Agreed.  This is how rumors get started.

Also, I love Mike Coleman's steadfast commitment to one thread!

Honestly, I'm not against hiring Dustin either... the only reason I put Boals higher on my list is that he seems to be more of a proven recruiter.

And as far as the thing about staying in Athens ... personally, I view Boals as an up-and-comer, just like Groce was when we hired him. If he's hired and has a lot of success here, I would expect Boals to get hired away too. Him being an alum is a bonus in my eyes, but I wouldn't expect that to keep him here forever
