Boals/Trent is a dream hire.

I've seen crazier things happen.

Lets slow down on putting Gary Trent on the sidelines...yes he was a good player for the Bobcats and played in the NBA....but that doesn't mean it would translate to a good coach.

Does he have any coaching background at all?

I tend to agree, while I loved Trent as a player sometimes legends are not the best coaches. Especially one with no coaching experience. I think he is counseling youths in Minnesota now, right?

Reggie Theus wasn't given a chance at Illinois, what about OHIO?  He's sitting at home right now, correct?

I tend to agree with those emphasizing the program-systemic issue.  We have a program-system in place.  Do like Butler and Xavier and hire a head coach who is immersed in the system and will perpetuate it at Ohio.

Several candidates who fit that have already been mentioned on here.

Another thing...we get $200,000 from Illinois for Groce, do we get anything if they take assistants as well?

Unlikely.  Assistants are usually yearly hires.

And let's not forget Dr. McDavis. Played a role in getting Solich and Groce and he can close the deal with any potential coach who may waver.

What are everyone's thoughts on Richard Pitino out of Louisville? After the Louisville game this season, his father Rick said Ohio was easily a Big East caliber team. Think we could garner any interest out of Richard? He's only 29, and having a youthful coach with a big-league mentality might not be a bad move.

Love the name.  Love the pedigree.  I don't like the number 29.

His age bothered me too, however you have to imagine that would give him time at OU to stick around before bigger, national programs are interested in him. However, I don't see it being more than 5 years before he would be picked up by a bigger program. His name garners a lot of respect in the basketball world and us picking him up NOW might not be a bad choice.

Can't remember if I've seen the name here or not, but how about giving Reggie Theus a call?  Had great success turning around a struggling New Mexico State program, taking them from 6-24 to 25-9 and an NCAA appearance in just two years.  Plays an uptempo style that isn't much of a departure from the type of game Groce liked to play.  Could be lured by the fact that he could take over a team that would immediately contend for a conferene title and more.

He'd certainly command the respect of the players in the locker room.  Coached under Pitino and played for Tark.  Would be a great option for the Green and White.

Didn't he win a State title or two on 'Hang Time'?

Reggie Theus, interestingly enough, actually attended our beatdown of Kent State in Athens this year.  He had a front row seat behind the Ohio bench.

To reiterate, I'd like to see us perpetuate the program-system.  That may mean hiring within or hiring someone from the Matta-Groce tree.  It doesn't require hiring a big name.  Brad Stevens and Shaka Smart were well known in the coaching profession but weren't big names.

My top pick would be to go with Boals. Even if he was not an OU alum he should be given consideration. With him being an OU guy, this is a guy we can maybe keep around for awhile.

Scanning through the previous messages in this thread, some of the considerations in choice were looking at high school coaches, someone with previous college HC experience, someone able to recruit, someone able to get Caris Lavert on board with new leader and being able to retain the next coach. I have not heard Jerry Francis mentioned but I think he would meet all of these criteria. I think he left the college ranks to be with his family. His 2 oldest are finishing up high school and he would be closer to central Ohio.

Sounding like Pat Kelsey to Winthrop.

He has not coached at all to this point, but he did say when he was in Athens that he has taken the NBA's training course on coaching. It's quite obvious he wants to get into coaching. He said then that he thought in particular he would make a good college coach because, based on the background he came from, he could relate to any problems young people have.

I think giving Gary a chance as an assistant under Boals might be a very good thing to do.  If he turns out to be a dud as a coach, he could always become an assistant AD.

Although having him back in Athens would bring a lot of attention to the program, and he has shown an interest in coaching, I think some healthy scepticism is warranted.  Coaching at this level is a 60 hour per week job.  It entails long hours spent on recruiting and breaking down film.  I have seen many a coach work very late hours on the job.  I remains to be seen if he has the patience for that, though I would love to be proven wrong.

Having said that, he is GARY TRENT!  I'm sure the job is his if he wants it.

Although I really like John Rhodes, both as a coach and a person, I doubt his record at ONU will warrant a look.
