It was a rough year there in conference play, but it ended with a Conference title appearance, Sweet 16, and the #14 ranked recruiting class in the country heading into next year. Not bad for a down year.

Which is another reason why I think Xavier fans are even more insane to think he should be let go. Two Sweet 16s in three years and the best recruiting classes they've had there possibly ever. That brawl they had did a lot more damage than people want to believe. It totally killed all of their confidence. UC wasn't hurt by it as much because that's kind of UC's reputation whether we like it or not. Xavier was up on a pedestal and got knocked off in a big way. They had to get a little bit lucky to get back to the Sweet 16 this year (Lehigh), but they still made it. They've got a bright future with Wells and when Jalen Reynolds finally gets on the court.

$150K in 2010.  He was at $33K at Akron in 2009.  Akron is so cheap.

Jeff Boals is an obvious interview.
John Rhodes has HC experience that he didn't have 4 yrs.ago.
Fran Fraschilla has OU experience, HC experience, and connections/high profile from ESPN work.
Reggie Rankin has OU exp., Asst. coach exp, Ohio ties, connections thru ESPN.

Bring in Boals at $250K and bump up Dustin to $125K.  This should be done right after tosu's season ends.

And I want Bacari as an assistant.

I'll go along with what you said, and add this:  whomever they hire, I just want to see the program be maintained so it can grow larger than John Groce.  That's the whole goal anyway, right?  If it means keeping assistants, bringing in new assistants, guys that have been here a few years back, whatever.  I also hope that Schaus and McD learn a little from this and up the ante on the compensation side of things so that in the future, we have a little more to work with in a buyout clause, and a hopefully a little more competitive compensation that could deter a guy from leaving a little more.

I like this thought.  It would double Dustin's salary so I would assume he would need the asst head coach title.  I would think that would keep him around the program.

I like the line of thinking to bump Dustin up to a higher salary and keep the continuity.  Seems to be how other schools have succeeded in building a PROGRAM.

What I ultimately want to see is the PROGRAM grow to heights where we eventually can pay OUr coach 7-figures.  Not just because we can, but because we get to a level where we are the dominant MAC power and national in scope.  This would boost support, which hopefully in return, will boost income for the entire program.

I look at it this way:
* Schaus knew this day was coming.
* Schaus is pretty level-headed in situations like this, unlike people like me and others on the board.
* Schaus is well-connected in the basketball world.
* Schaus has made a string of great hires for men's basketball dating back to Wichita State. No reason to think this won't be the same. Maybe he moves on someday, too, but he'll leave us in good shape as he did WSU.

The good news here is that our Athletic Director has a good track record in choosing men's basketball coaches. He hired Mark Turgeon at Wichita St. who guided that program to a Sweet 16 appearance in 2006. He replaced Turgeon with Gregg Marshall who has been successful (2012 MVC Coach of the Year) as well. He hired Groce here and he led the Bobcats to 3 NCAA wins in 4 seasons. Ohio previously had 4 NCAA wins in school history.

I don't like the promoting the assistant approach. But I may be influenced by the Billy Hahn and Brian Knorr debacles. Ohio is in a great position because we have a $10M lottery ticket to hand someone. I trust that Schaus will hand that out wisely.

Boals is my first choice while promoting Dustin to associate HC.

I think Dustin has earned an interview, but Knorr and Hahn have left a bad taste in my mouth about bringing up an assistant from within.  I realize this is unfair to Dustin.

Fraschilla is my "Solich out of the box" choice.  Honestly doubt he would be interested and we probably couldn't afford him, but he could have something to prove and fire in his belly.  It wouldn't hurt to give him a call.

Funny, I almost posted something identical to this but didn't want to get railed on as being a company man.

I'd add to the list his dad's pedigree, including having coached the Lakers.  Jim is a smart guy, and certainly is going to make any decision with the University's interests first.

Boales would be great.  However, I worry that OU is just going to become a springboard school for coaches if we continue to win games/MAC Championships/go deeper into the NCAA Tourney, without paying out a reasonable salary to keep a winning coach.  Granted there are more things to look at other than salary, but in today's society...its a big one.

I'll cool with a springboard school, it means we continue to win, get national exposure, etc.

In order to keep a coach..salary is very important
in order to increase salary... fan base/season ticket holders, increased revenue is important
in order to increase fan base/season ticket holder/revenue...winning is important.

Until we have a fan base that is going to shell out the $$$, a springboard school is the best we can hope for.

Very good point.  I'm just not sure Athens is geographically able to support a monster sports program of any sort.  I do worry about consistency with being a springboard.  You're right that it wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, but it would rely on if we can stay winning consistently with a new coach every 4-5 years.

For what it's worth, there's a story in The Post citing Gary Trent saying he'd be a good assistant for Jeff Boals. Imagine a Boals-Ford-Trent staff.

We might be able to when, I mean if, we devote more money to basketball as a conference and quit wasting our time with football.  I know, everyone says football is necessary.  I know, it's all about football these days.  I know I'm probably essentially alone in this opinion.  But tell me that football does for the University what the basketball team can do simply by getting to  the tournament and winning ONE game?  I simply won't believe that.   Basketball is less expensive to support and does more for us when we succeed.  That's what lends me to say we should put more into basketball so that the next coach, whomever it may be, can continue to build a PROGRAM.

Why would Dustin want to stay at Ohio as an Assistant for less money and prestige, if Groce will hire him for more money and more prestige at Illinois?

So ya telling me Groce is going to take Dustin Fox to Illinois so he can get some experience with a BCS program so when Boals leaves for a job then Dustin can come back home to be the head coach?

Given what we are hearing from Illinois, I doubt Groce will be able to bring his entire staff (shotgun wedding w/ a CPL coach).  Given his prior ties, Dustin would be the most likely candidate to stay.

It seems Boals is the consensus choice.  Can we just send this thread to Jim and tell him to make the call?

I agree that I don't think Groce will target Dustin for an assistant position at Illinois.  I see J Walker going there.

My thing is, if you were going to err on the side of continuity and the players #1 choice and go with Dustin Ford...I would think it would be best to do that right away, like today.  I don't like the idea of "We want to find the best coach and will search far and wide, including our current assistants" and then after whoring around for a few weeks, turn to Dustin and say it's all yours!
