Are we missing the fact that Frank wants duel threat athletes at Quarterback. I feel he has come more towards the "true" QB side of the spectrum in the more recent years. Ran into shopping at a mid-major for an above average duel threat passer is like shopping for a Tesla on a Prius budget. A lot of times you are left with clearance rack qb's that have some appealing factors, but just aren't it. A majority of the stats mentioned in this threat are in regards to passing, and pay minimal homage to the running abilities of these qbs. Look around Mid-Majors through the NFL consistent QB play is a premium, especially! for dual threats. Yet none of the quarterbacks listed were ever hyped to be prolific passers. Especially at OU where the football culture and stability have come a long way, but still relatively young and underachieving. Remember there is always a story behind the story. My observations are my own, but agree we are yet to have OUr MAC Anomaly (Insert MAC Qb Namesakes Here). As doom in gloom as this thread can be I say meh not so fast...

Gdowski Qb's
Everson- A Tim Tebow of the MAC before Tim Tebow, Hell of a leader tough strong athlete, but marginal passer at best. Not recruited by Solich/Gdowski

Bower- His Pedigree OU seemed like a peace of mind for the staff, and check the box fall back for Bower. Many would say he significantly regressed from the year he sat out to his actual snaps w/OU.

Jones- Closest to a true pocket passer OU has had, played as a true freshman that never progressed with injury etc. Not near the athlete proclaimed to be in HS by recruiting services.

Febus- Raw talent coming in, Immature Locker room character that never took his craft serious enough to progress the way he needed to at this level

Scott- By far the best athlete to takes snaps at OU under Frank. 6-2 205 4.4 could spin it with the best, accurately. But injuries and mental breakdowns while always looking over his shoulder never allowed him to achieve his potential

Jackson- Straight up roller coaster ride, hyped athleticism but a good enough athlete to keep plays alive. Lived and died by the big play, but minimal consistency

Sweeney- Derailed by injury too early to fairly evaluate

Tettleton- By far the most consistent and highly decorated. Groomed, polished solid athlete with systematic passing qualities. I agree his time benefited by some of the more talented support staff of initial Solich buzz recruits. Disappointingly Grew into a complacent detached QB who appeared "over it".

Izzy Qb's

Vick- I was pretty much over him quickly, and his mediocre arrogance as stated lost starting role that was always begging for him to step up.

Sprague- Agree was a stop-gap, tough enjoyable scrapper you couldn't help but root for. Pedigree and tools nothing to write home about above average throwing ability, passing not so much.

Windham- Once again over hyped athletic ability coming in, but mentally never appeared to have the confidence to truly own the position.

Maxwell- Young, but overall I like his tools and certainly feel there is the possibility of a big step happening between this year and next... TBD

Bower was probably the most effective pure passer we've had in the last 15 years, but he tended to kill himself with some head-scratching interceptions.

They weren't really head-scratching interceptions - he just had trouble for some reason reading zone defenses, and tended not to see the guy in short zone, and would throw it right to him for an easy pick.

Okay, but why have I seen about every team in the MAC put a qb on the field who ripped us (same with out of conf opponents)?

At some point--recruiting or 'coach-'em-up'--this staff has not produced any consistent quarterbacking beside TT.

And, from the long post above (which I appreciate), this staff seems to have ruined, gotten into the head of, some of the qbs here.

Reading back over this thread, I just want to say Spring Ball started today and good luck to all. Hope we come out strong and healthy.

As I read through this thread again, I had a few thoughts. First, let's take OhioStunter's list of the top ten Ohio Seasons in history and update it to include 2016:

Highest Passing Efficiency Season (min. 75 attempts)
1. 148.6 Tyler Tettleton 2011
2. 141.2 Tyler Tettleton 2012
3. 139.4 Bob Babbitt 1962
4. 138.8 Tyler Tettleton 2013
5. 137.8 Boo Jackson 2008
6. 136.6 JD Sprague 2015
7. 133.5 Derrius Vick 2015
8. 136.2 Boo Jackson 2010
9. 131.8 Quentin Maxwell 2016
10. 131.1 Cleve Bryant 1968
11. 130.9 Derrius Vick 2014

Most Yards Per Game Season (min. 5 games)

1. 237.0 Tyler Tettleton 2012
2. 235.9 Tyler Tettleton 2011
3. 228.1 Bruce Porter 1986
4. 219.3 Tyler Tettleton 2013
5. 215.1 Sammy Shon 1981
6. 209.9 Donny Harrison 1983
7. 196.2 Boo Jackson 2008
8. 186.9 Dennis Swearingen 1985
9. 180.7 Derrius Vick 2015
10. 178.8 Quentin Maxwell 178.8 (including only games where he started)
11. 173.7 Theo Scott 2009

Wow, Maxwell, even though he was rough at times, was actually in the Top 10 of all time Ohio history. Not a shabby start at all for a QB. Was Maxwell all-MAC last year as a Freshman? Hardly, but he was pretty good for a Freshman. Now the question is, can he show the dramatic improvement from Freshman to Sophomores that these other QBs showed under Isphording?

Vick: Pass efficiency went from 101 to 131 +30%
Sprague: Pass efficiency went from 100 to 137 +37%
Windham: Pass efficiency went from 98 to 119 +21%

If Maxwell's pass efficiency jumps by a similar amount, he will compete with Tettleton's 2011 season. Despite that, I'm not convinced that he can beat out Rourke for the QB job, but I am convinced that for him to beat him out he's going to have to improve a lot because I am very, very impressed with Rourke.

I think this thread is going to be moot soon, because my opinion is that we are going to see some very good QB play this Fall. I hope they all stay healthy.

strategic post, way to rehash this, trying to scare away Zaire from taking someone's position. We should see much better QB play this year. Isphording is a relatively new coach at Ohio. Albin and Solich brought in a lot of dual threats who were not that accurate in the past.

Nobody despises to lose more than I do. That's got me into trouble over the years, but it also made a man of mediocre ability into a pretty good coach. Woody Hayes

I think it's most likely that the QB Coach has a final say on who gets offered and who doesn't. I'm not sure where Solich and Albin fit in the recruiting of QBs, but I'd guess that Germano and Gdowski had a lot more to do with who they focused on.
