Temple -Big East

There's an article in today's "The Record" (sorry couldn't get it to link) about the Big East's new football divisions.
According to the article Temple ended up in the West Division with Boise St.,Housten,Memphis,SanDiago St. and SMU.

The article says the division were set up, in part ,to preserve existing rivalries and to make it simple for people to know what division their team was in.

The article also says the Big East "will do everything it can to ease the travel burden" on Temple.
Maybe they'll double their frequent flyer miles.

Easing the travel burdens on Temple will consist of not openly mocking them to their face or in official league publications/communications

Maybe they can play all their games at home.

Per the article, to think that in 2015, there will no attempt to take into account any geographical considerations reeks of stupidity, but hey, a coast to coast conference of also rans makes no sense to me either.

Where you have football teams, with multimillion dollar budgets, a few trips a year out west at $200-300k a pop may not be the end of the world. Ohio has played in Wyoming and New Mexico, for example. Temple could offset that expense, at least in part, by making their out-of-conference games more local, by playing Nova, Rutgers, Penn State, etc.

That's all fine, but what about the minor sports? How do you afford to send wrestlers, swimmers, gymnasts, track/field etc across the country when there is no revenue at all?

Good thing they have that guaranteed BCS money coming in to make up for it.

I have a friend who is a UC grad who leads me to believe it's possible that UC and Louisville move to the Big twelve in the next couple years.

Well, the MAC doesn't make as much sense as it used to, with U.Mass in the mix. That makes it comparable to several other conferences that are most regional, but have one or two teams that don't fit. The ACC isn't bad, but BC doesn't fit the geographical profile. The Big Twelve is the same, with WV not fitting. The Sunbelt isn't bad, either, but the two Florida schools aren't really in the footprint.

I'd call it this way:
Geographically reasonable - SEC, Big 10
Mostly reasonable - ACC (BC), Big 12 (WV), Sunbelt (FAU,FIU), MAC (U.Mass)
Just a big area, not much you can do about it - PAC 12
Make no sense - Big East, CUSA, MWC

The Big 10/12 with Nebraska is reasonable and the MAC with UMass is not?

Nebraska's at least contiguous with Iowa and only a state away from Minn, Ill & Wisc. Plus, it's Midwest; makes more sense than Eastern-oriented Penn St being in there. I guess with its "Red" and "Blue" divisions (will they go by how states voted in the previous presidential election?) the Big Least is trying not to segregate the new teams from the old. And it does give them flexibility after Cincy and L'ville head for greener pastures. The BL was scrambling to find anyone who'd take them last year, and wound up with the worst hodgepodge in college football.

I think we are overlooking that some of the teams in these newly aligned conferences do not play all sports in the league-just football- so travel for other sports is not so much a problem as some think. UMASS is that way-right? Hawaii in the MWC as well. And Boise? when it joins the Big East. I've forgotten some of the others, but I think they're out there.

I don't think the Sun Belt is all that spread out and C-USA at least has divisions that make some sense. As far as the SEC -Missouri didn't seem a logical choice to me - FSU or WVU made a lot more sense. Texas to Florida and Missouri to Florida seems like a long way to me, but that league has money enough for everyone to fly everywhere so travel is not as much an issue.
