Does Ohio University need to upgrade their schedule with the advent of the new NCAA play-off format set to come into to play.  Got thinking about this after reading how highly regarded Ball State was for their BCS schedule of non-league games.  If rankings and the computer formulas are all going to be used, will beefing up by getting rid of the Norfolk States and Gardner Webb's of the world in our best interest?

Not if we don't win.

Someone wiser to conference alignment may have to correct me but I don't think that any of the teams that will be in the "Group of Five" conferences next year are currently ranked except LTech and maybe Rutgers (Who likely will drop out soon).

This year showed that in order to be the best team in the "Group of Five" and thus get the playoff bid you are gonna have to be undefeated, or damn close.  This will be even more true as the SOS drops in the Big East.  Really this is the same thing that the Big10 always used to complain about regarding the National Championship game. Anything short of perfection isn't enough to get them where they want to be.

Computers will like the tougher schedules, human polls like undefeated seasons, so I can argue both ways.  In my opinion, it would seem like a undefeated MAC team with 1 BCS win would likely play in the playoff, that is unless a Big east team were undefeated as well.  Close call to me.

Getting rid of Norfolk State/Gardner Webb can only be done at the cost of not having 6 home games a year, and I don't think a 5 home/7 away schedule is conducive to getting where you want to be, plus it hurts the local business community. Instead where I see the schedule upgrades happening is losing the New Mexico State/UL-L type games, and trying to replace them with home-homes against the likes of Kansas, Cincy, Louisville, Rutgers, etc.

L'ville (20) and Kent (25) are in the AP poll; L'ville (18) and Boise (22) in the USAT poll; L'ville (19) in the BCS standings.

Knocking off the non-GoF teams is almost mandatory to getting recognition, and can maybe make up for a conference loss or a loss vs. a good GoF school.  The MAC is getting huge accolades this season for its wins vs. AQ schools, even though the conference as a whole is winning less than one out of three (8-17 the last time I checked).  Games against non-GoF schools, however, may be at a premium in the new playoff world as they try to upgrade their schedules with more games vs. non-GoFs.  The MAC's greatest success this season was against the Big Least (UConn, USF, Cincy & Rutgers), but they'll be one of us in two years, so wins vs. them likely won't mean as much.

I assume you really don't mean "play in the playoff." You mean play in one of the six major bowls.
