Love this excerpt from Dan Wetzel's piece on getting a MAC team into a BCS game:

It would be a magical moment for the MAC, a proud day for a league full of mostly Midwestern state schools with often working and middle class students looking for a leg up. The MAC never puts on airs. There are no delusions of grandeur. It keeps its athletic departments in line with its universities. The league just is what it is.

"We're just a bunch of kids who love to play no matter who shows up to watch or who's talking about us," NIU quarterback Jordan Lynch said.

Sort of says it all about the MAC.

This describes my family very well.  My sisters and I all went to MAC schools and were the first in our family's lineage (that we know of) to earn a degree.

That's a well written article and I agree as far as the MAC's concerned.  I think the MAC is perfect for Ohio and vice versa.

We're the "Rust Belt" conference and proud of it.  Nice description by Wetzel.  Think of the branch campuses alone.  Nothing screams midwest working class more than Zanesville, Belmont County, Portsmouth and Lancaster (not to mention Chillicothe).

Kent almost making a BCS bowl makes me wonder why any school would spend $50-$60 million on athletics annually.

Can somebody hit a pull up jumper for me?.....

I thought I read somewhere that OSU spends upwards of $130 million a year on their athletic dept.  I could be wrong on that.

I do think it shows as we all know that Ohio does have its priorities in order.

That is a stupid statement, OSU is one of only two schools to offer all 36 NCAA sports at their institution and no student fees in any way are used to pay for their athletic dept.  The athletic dept. is actually expected to give a certain amount of money to the university each year to help the university make its budget.  And on top of that OSU last I checked was a higher ranked institution than OHIO, so it does seem to have its academic priorities in order, you would have been better off using an SEC school as an example of bad priorities.

A little harsh, aren't we?  OK, replace the letters "OSU" with "Auburn".  Feel better now?  Geez, where's the civility of this board gone?  Have a Snickers bar Sargentfan, you'll feel better!

I might be an ardent OHIO fan, but I am also secondarily a OSU fan.  I don't mind much of the OSU hate here cause I understand the reasons.  But I will stick up for OSU when anyone writes something way off base about them.  Thus why you got such a reaction and if you think that was a lack of civility you must live in a bubble, that was tame for what you would get on most other message boards.

Isn't it amazing how a thread about a really good, heartwarming article about the MAC turned into a friggin' barroom brawl.

I quite like the MAC.   It is what it is.....modest budgets, kids playing mostly for the love of the game, enjoyable fans who mostly keep a proper perspective.   Great prices on season tickets to see up close division 1 athletics.   And the occasional BCS buster or Sweet 16 run that  fans appreciate and enjoy that create lasting memories.   God I'm getting old.

These potshots at the academics of SEC schools is getting old.  The midwestern schools, like the Big Ten, haven't exactly avoided being penalized recently.  And several SEC schools have a very solid research school academic rating.

My cousin who works in the library at Alabama is very sensitive to these kind of remarks.  She's a girl from Minnesota but has become a big Crimson Tide fan, as has her husband who is on science faculty.  I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't more cheating on a regular basis up Rt. 33 in Cowtown than in Tuscaloosa.

Totally unfounded statement. There's no reason to point out an unnecessary attack against the SEC and then follow with the same BS about the big ten, and OSU in particular.

I'm not a fan of OSU. I just don't care about them. But this board gets so over-the-top with OSU hatred, it actually makes me want to defend them.

You are a joke! Just make unfounded statements! Not to mention Marshall is one of the schools you quasi-support, like they are so squeaky clean.

It's funny where a thread goes sometimes.  My intent wasn't to denigrate or impugn any school; I only intended to point out the growing size of athletic budgets at some universities compared to Ohio's and I guess I poorly worded what I was intending or hoping to get across.  I think OSU's a great university and the SEC has many good universities in it; does it get much better than Vanderbilt?  (Although, if you think Auburn handled the Cam Newton situation on the up-and-up I've got some beachfront property in Montana I'd like to sell you).

Anyway, my point was, I like where Ohio's athletic department is right now and I like what Schaus is doing.
