Who is this Jacob Corrigan who tweeted that Ohio has a good chance of going to the BBVA Compass Bowl? How credible is he? (Honest question, no offense)

I read a tweet from a guy named Timothy Burke (who says on his description he is an OU grad) that the Bobcats' win over Penn State was their first win over a B1G team since 2000, when the correct answer was 2006...

Jacob Corrigan is still a student (a junior I believe) in the J-school. I guess he also reports for WATH.

Burke is a regular poster here and a contributor at Deadspin.

As far as actual journalism goes, neither have earned much credibility.

One is still an undergrad, which means he's still learning. The other has parlayed screen grabs from other people's camera work into a job with Deadspin. As far as actually reporting or breaking news, I'd take anything they say with a lot of grains of salt. Not really trying to throw them under the bus, but it is what it is. Corrigan's statement seems to be a his shot to "break" a story. Hopefully it works out for him, but I have my doubts on the infamous Chris Broussard-esque "sources."

What are you talking about? This sounds at least as professional, if not more professional, as most of the bilge I read in the papers and see on TV each day.

Double word score for "bilge."

Yes, because people should believe you, someone who can't even post under a real name.

I hope he is right, it just seems odd to me that he has a source that has confirmed something like this with so many variables still in play. Once again, nothing against him, but I do believe there is reason to be skeptical given the circumstances.

Nice back-peddle.  You specifically question others' credibility but think that yours shouldn't be an issue.  Is your degree in asymmetry?

(apologies for assuming degreed)

It goes on here all the time, and life in general. Are all the people who question football decisions made by the Ohio staff credible enough to do so? When you are working in the media, or any job that extends to the masses, it kind of comes with the business.

So, you disregard good thoughts if you perceive the source to not be qualified?

You might find it better to consider an idea on its merits, with not much regard for its source.  Pretty much a very basic truth for life and business.

I simply responded to the OP's one question. I've read other stuff Jacob has written, and I've never questioned his credibility because he mostly just reports on games and such. However, this latest claim to having a source who knows about the bowl game does make me skeptical. That's not disregarding good thoughts, that's just understanding how the bowl system works. Do you truly believe his source is 100% legitimate without question? That's all I was getting at. Countless others on here have voiced similar opinions, because so many variables are still in play.

As for Burke, the guy once again in the OP gave an example of him providing incorrect information. Taking screen shots and placing watermarks on them is a different type of media than breaking news, so yes, again, I feel as though I can be skeptical of anything he would say as well as far as true news is concerned. Just because I'm skeptical and the OP is obviously somewhat skeptical does not mean everyone has to be though, so not sure why you are so concerned about it.

I never once said anything about being a credible source, and I don't try to break stories or even work in the media. So my credibility in that field is small, as it should be. Using or not using my real name wouldn't change that.

You miss the point and/or fail to respond to well made points as nicely as anyone to ever appear on this board.

Yes, it matters that you don't use your real name, that you hide behind an alias.

You called someone's credibility into question; it's fair, therefore, to address yours.

This is so stupid. So it matters if Joe Student says something, or Joe The Janitor? No, it doesn't, unless you are that person who would just judge based on what the person does. I'm a consumer of media, and that's all the credibility I need in this situation.

You've listed on your profile in the past that you are a CPA. Therefore, what credibility do you have when it comes to having an opinion on sports or journalism? Do you see how stupid that logic is? The only topic you can talk on from now on is CPA-related material. No more credibility on any other professional subject matter for you.

There are thousands of voices out there, and I couldn't identify Tim or Jacob out of a lineup of five people. I go off their personality and body of work. Tim is not in the breaking news business, he's on the lighter side of things, trying to capture the moment on social networks. Sorry that I would not trust him as a go-to source of information when he has an eye on a ton of things at once.

Jacob is in training to be a journalist to break news and cover news (at least to my understanding). It does not matter at all what my background or level of expertise on journalism is to trust or not trust every single thing the two say. It's a right of mine as a consumer of media. The OP obviously had similar trusting issues with the two as well, and in that original thread with Jacob's news, there were others who didn't buy into the source.

This is pretty much part of my point in a nutshell. Everyone is entitled to agree or disagree with a source. I guess Ohio alums or current students are untouchable? I read feedback when the story first broke about us playing Ole Miss. It was met with some skepticism, as expected. I've also mentioned more than once that I hope his source is right, because it could be a nice feather in Jacob's cap.

Well obviously something's not right because JoeSource is conspicuously absent from his rush to break the story, I'm going to earn credibility post.

And if "donuts" magically became "Rick Smith" he instantly becomes credible because he used a real name? Nobody has ever created a fake account before.

It's a fan site, EVERYTHING said here should be taken with a grain of salt.

As for Jacob, a scoop like that, I hope he didn't limit himself to 140 characters and expanded on what he knew in a radio report at some point after learning the news.
