These are going to be fun as the season progresses, especially with the rampant speculation that we may run the table and would potentially qualify for a BCS bowl birth.
  • As I understand it, Pizza desperately wants Western and Toledo as their first choice because they travel better than we do, considering their fan base's relative proximity Detroit, and have first choice.
  • GoDaddy may well end up with the better match up for us between Pizza and GoDaddy in the MAC's tie in bowls.
  • FIPB was the best financial end result of any of our bowls to date.
  • And if we do, in our fantasy projection, end up undefeated and in a BCS bowl, we are likely to lose millions making the trip, as UConn did when they went to the Fiesta Bowl.
Let the speculation begin!!!

How do payouts work on bcs games? I'm assuming we'd have to buy a set of seats?

Yes, and that, plus the extended time the team and entourage is expected to arrive before the game were the primary source of their losses.  Considering our traveling entourage is considerable smaller than UConn's, you would think the financial outcome would be far worse in our case.

Eh, there's worse ways to lose a few million dollars.

Notre Dame in the Pizza Bowl would be epic...It'll never happen because Notre Dame would rather stay home than play in the Pizza Bowl, but it would be epic.

FWIW...

http://aol.sportingnews.com/ncaa-football/story/2011-01-24/sbj-bcs-payouts-grow-along-with-big-shares-for-big-six-conferences

Say we make the Orange Bowl, which payed out $17.5 million to WVU and Clemson each last year. If we sold our ticket allotment and traveled well and received the full $17.5 million we would theoretically earn more money for the MAC than the past 5-6 years combined! (Give or take a million or two, I don't have the past figures other than 2011).

And people wonder why football needs to be big at this school? That's an absolutely huge figure.

The thing with that $17.5 million dollar figure is that it first goes to your conference and then your conference spreads out the money.  The question would be how much of the pie does the MAC give the team that made it.  UConn got screwed because the Big East really spreads that money out equally, which is nice for those that don't make it or for the teams that have good traveling fans but sucks for those that don't travel well.  I would personally hope that if any MAC team is lucky enough to attend a BCS bowl game that the MAC would make sure that school would get enough of the pie to cover their expenses and ticket obligations.  Otherwise the academic faculties of the MAC schools might rebel.

Anything less than a split after expenses is not acceptable.  I thought the O$U's of the world had lavish trips with all kinds of goodies  received by all travelers and that cost was absorbed then the conference divided the lots.

All I have to say about talk this early in the season about things like this are:

Remember Ohio plays the day after Thanksgiving again this year and well that's all I got to say about it.

Exactly. If Ohio were to make a major bowl, the money would go to the MAC, and all the other MAC schools would get extra money. Would Ohio even get enough to cover costs, or would they end up with a loss? I don't know.

How does that work? I would think with a smaller traveling group, you'd have lower expenses, and lose less.

I read that BCS conferences are notorious for spreading the money causing loses, but Boise got all the travel expenses covered by the WAC.  For some reason I don't expect much from the MAC.

Of course the money goes back to the conferences, everyone and their brother knows that. I would hopefully think that our AD asks the MAC for them to at least cover our expenses and then split up the rest. Either way, we're getting more money out of it. Unless we plan on moving out of the MAC soon, why not spread it around for the better of the league?

We were in Boise for four days, and we would have to be at a BCS destination for a week.  We took only seniors in the band but would likely have to take the full band, etc.  Plus, UConn had thousands more than we would have traveling to a BCS game, which means we would have more unsold tickets than they did.

Oh, got you. When you said a smaller entourage than U. Conn., I thought you were referring to a smaller staff, not a smaller fan base. That was why I was confused, because a smaller staff would reduce expenses. Obviously a smaller fan base would mean more unsold tickets, and a bigger loss.

In the fall of 94' campus talk was beating Kent State to stop the longest losing streak
in the nation! And yes school administration complained then also, when the university
had to pay to replace the South endzone goal post!!

More money to the entire conference means better competition and less people laughing at how crappy our schedule is. Plus, the Love would no longer complain about our schedule. Maybe...

A not very practical but fun to contemplate solution: We declare ourselves an independent at the end of the season, pocket all the BCS money, and take the money to buy our way into a better conference.  We'd want to hire the same firm that WVU did when the exited the Big East before their contract was up.

I agree.  EMU (my favorite example) doesn't deserve a penny from any MAC profits that result from a big bowl game until they can manage to be a D-1 school.

The MAC being a voluntary association, this isn't really socalism, more communitarianism (sp?). It'd be socalism if the governor's office seized the pay-day check and then redistributed it evenly to the athletic department coffers of every college/university in the state in a one-size fits all manner.

I don't think it'd really be socialism until we spread the wins around too.  Fans too.  EMU is lacking.

Now there's a thought I haven't toyed with yet. I always sat back assuming we would build up the following and brand name, and eventually be good enough that we can't be ignored and get invited to a bigger conference...This is indeed an interesting thought to contemplate, as you said.

Sorry to be the wet blanket on this thread of optimism, but if we go 13-0, we don't go to the BCS. Not saying it couldn't happen in the future, but not this year.

Check the history on non-BCS schools trying to qualify for a BCS bowl. OU would definitely have to be a top-10 team in the final BCS rankings to even get a sniff. Only seven times has a non-BCS school made a BCS bowl... while six times such a team finished in the top 10 and got bypassed.

This team would have to win every game by 30 points or more to get anywhere near the top 10. The strength of schedule just isn't there. It takes a while to become Boise State or TCU. We should all honestly be thrilled if this team wins the MAC -- since it hasn't happened in my lifetime (!) -- and wins another bowl game. Playing a Big 10 team in the Pizza Bowl would be plenty cool. If this team goes undefeated, it would be incredible, and it would set the table for recruiting and future teams. But this team should NOT be judged a disappointment if it fails to go undefeated.

Don't forget that a few years ago, Ball State went undefeated in the regular season ... but then lost the MAC title game, lost its bowl game, and has hardly been seen since. This program needs consistent growth, and that's what we've been getting!

Let's build one step at a time. Win one Saturday and go from there.

For now, let's just enjoy the ride.
