I got this from an article on CBSSports.com. My math is in bold.

The biggest payday in MAC history, works out this way:

-- $7 million of the $28.2 million is divided between the five non-BCS conferences (Conference USA, Mountain West, MAC, Sun Belt and WAC). $1.4M for the MAC

-- Another $7 million is divided into 15 “units” based on conference strength. Because it is the No. 1 ranked non-BCS league, the MAC will receive five of those 15 shares, followed by the No. 2-ranked conference getting four shares, etc. $2.3M for the MAC

-- The MAC will get $8 million of the remaining $14 million as the participating conference. $8M for the MAC

-- The other $6 million will be split up into those 15 units. $2M for the MAC

So that adds up to $13.7M for the MAC. I would guess the MAC would give half of the $8M to NIU leaving $9.7M for the rest of the MAC. Since the MAC would normally get $3-3.5M, looks like an incremental $6-6.5M would go to the other 11 MAC schools to divide.

Note that the other Bowls that MAC teams will be playing in have a combined payout of about $9 million.  Now team expenses need to be considered, but a nice month of payouts.

Would be interesting to have someone figure out what these dollars mean as a percent of athletic budget for MAC teams vs. what the larger conferences are garnering - i.e., they may have higher overall payouts, but as a percent of budget, the MAC would probably be at the top.

This is all very confusing based upon an interesting formula that was agreed to by big six conferences and the outsider conferences, as discussed in the below article.  This article aslo state:   "Conferences typically share their BCS and other bowl revenue evenly, although the Big 12 is an exception and pays more to the bowl teams."
Ted, is there any source that suggests that the MAC is atypical and will not share evenly?

There is not. Other non-AQ's have all given a bigger cut to the participating school so I'm assuming the MAC would do the same. Especially of NIU can't sell its ticket allotment. I could see the MAC making it whole.

The Kalamazoo Gazette this morning ran an article saying the MAC would only get $8M. Not sure if that's incremental to the normal BCS payout they get every year or not. But the article makes it clear that the MAC hasn't decided how to split the money yet. Which also leads me to believe it won't be split evenly.

the MAC has done a good job in the past of helping schools with their tickets.

Far be it from me to say I know what the MAC is going to do with it's money, but it has set aside BCS money in the past to offset the cost of bowl participation when ticket sales would otherwise leave an athletic department taking a loss.

I would imagine a large chunk of this will be tagged as such.
