Perspective on Warhawks' season

Judging from posts here at bobcatattack, it seems a consensus has developed that has us concurring that the Warhawks are a worthy opponent for the Bobcats. I agree!

We Cats fans are way too familiar with how Ohio's season unfolded - 7-0, injuries piling up to the point where I felt numb when another Cat went down and out, and 4 losses in the final 5 games.

What about the Warhawks' season? How did it go?

They opened at Arkansas as decided u-dogs. Small wonder. Phil Steele had picked Arkansas to finish 3rd in the SEC West. The Warhawks upended the Razorbacks on OT, and most if not all of us applauded. But how good was Arkansas? Not. The Hogs finished 3-9 with their only wins over Jacksonville State , 3-win Auburn and Tulsa. And the Hogs' defense was as porous as a kitchen sieve, twice surrendering more than 50 points and once 45.

Next up for the Warhawks was Auburn, picked by Steele to finish 5th out of 7 in the SEC West. The Warhawks fell by 3 in OT to another team that was weak. The Tigers other two wins were over 1-win New Mexico State and Alabama A&M.

ULM's 47-42 loss to Baylor might have been its most impressive game. The Bears finished a good 7-5, including wins over Kansas State and Oklahoma State.

After the Baylor loss, the Warhawks reeled off 5 straight wins over Tulane (2-10), Middle TN (8-4), Florida Atlantic (3-9), WKU (7-5 and bowl bound), and South Alabama (2-10).

Then came losses to two solid teams - Louisana (8-4) and Arkansas State (9-3).

The Warhawks finished with wins over North Texas (4-8 with wins were over Texas Southern, Florida Atlantic (3-9), Louisiana and South Alabama) and Florida International (3-9 with wins over 1-11 Akron, South Alabama and FAU).

It would seem that Ohio's schedule and injury-ravaged 8-4 record is a pretty even match for ULM's schedule and 8-4 record.

ULM was never blown out, losing by 3 to Auburn, 5 to Baylor, 16 to Louisiana and 22 to Arkansas State. The Warhawks did surrender 40 or more points four times.

It will be interesting to see the Vegas spread. I expect it to show ULM the favorite by 7n or so points, especially as the game is being played so near its campus.
