Caught the last half or so of the Tater Bowl.  Toledo's 4th quarter looked like our 1st half against Troy.  They gave up four rushing TDs in six or so plays.  Kerwyn Williams covered the earth for three of them and rolled up nearly 200 yds in the 4th Q alone, including three carries of more than 50 yds each.  I know Toledo lost maybe their best defensive player on the opening kickoff but they held Utah St in check for more than three quarters.  Then suddenly the defensive line parted like the Red Sea.  They were outscored 28-10 in the 4th, with their only TD coming on a kickoff return.  A really sour end to a pretty good season for Toledo.

I have a feeling the MAC is going to have a really rough bowl season this year.  Toledo didn't get the conference off to a very good start.  They looked horrible.

I have the opposite feeling, the UT game will not be emblematic of the MAC Bowl season.  Toledo lost their best tackler (lead the nation in tackles) on the first play of the game, lost their best runner later in the game, and player their second string QB for most of the game.  This is not the UT team that beat the then undefeated and ranked UC earlier in the season.  It's really easy to sit in the seat of the scornful.

To think they had three chances to tie the game at 13.

Some of our alums are melting down on the basketball side of the board about supposed bad coaching (which is incorrect.) If you really wanted to watch some bad coaching, you should have checked out the Rockets. Goodness, how many delay of game penalties and time outs were called to avoid delay of game penalities? In addition, there was some very questionable play calling. Now this is a new coach, so we should give him some slack. However, it was a game Toledo could have won and did not because of some bad coaching.

What struck me most about both the Nevada and Toledo losses was highly questionable play-calling by both Chris Ault, long acclaimed for his creativity, and the youngster at Toledo.  Their dubious play-calling reminded me that few if any coaches can escape criticism from us denizens of the TV peanut gallery.

I'm certain that fans of both Nevada and Toledo are thinking that their Wolfpack and Rockets should have won.  And I believe they are correct.

Coaches - Ault is his own OC - must make play calls in a cauldron, and I've no doubt that after losses, privately, they second-guess many of their choices.

Usually it is not the Xs or the Os but, the Moes and the Joes. Does Toledo cave in the fourth with Molls? Do the settle for field goals with Fluellen?  A player or two can make coaches smarter.  Utah State is well coached, I am surprised it took until the fourth to take advantage of Molls being out.  Losing Molls/Fluellen was like Ohio losing Keller/Brazil in 2010. Credit to Utah State.

What looked really similar in this game to our scheme much of the season was Toledo's strategy of hurrying to the line of scrimmage to then simply have the linemen remain in their stances while the coaches seemingly take forever to get the quarterback the play call, which led to the delays an need to take TO's in the Toledo game.  I don't see the benefit of a "hurry up to the line" that doesn't lead to an increased number of plays called, and could actually argue that it is a disadvantage to have the linemen in the squat for prolonged periods without activity.

I would much rather see us make the play call immediately and get the play off quickly than always trying to make the perfect play call on every play.  The benefits from having the defense on their heels is something that I think would lead to more success than trying to get it right 100% of the time.

And for the record, I hate tOSU, and Ricordati and Torgerson are DB's.

Are you really hoping for that outcome?

This is a very correct post.

Wouldn't it be nice...for once, at least...to see our O or D go to the line in formation that makes the oppo discombobulated.  Maybe the only time we did anything like this was coming out with Daz/Beau two back set.
