Credit to Pataskala for the find.

''He's prepared his whole life for this,'' said Hocutt, who was the same age as Kingsbury when he got his first athletic director job at Ohio University. ''He's ready and I had no hesitation.''

This has the  feel  of a Cleve Bryant hire.

I don't know, Kingsbury was a hot prospect this year, having been the OC during Houston's (2011) and Texas A&M's high scoring seasons. He might turn out to be a bust as a head coach, but he's got more coaching experience than Cleve did. (Both are alunmi of their respective schools)

Cleve was a highly regarded assistant coach, who had recruited and coached up several high profile players.  He was a local legend at Ohio.  It was a grand homecoming when he was hired as HC.  However, we soon learned that good player and good assistant coach does not necessarily equal good head coach.  All I'm saying is that on the surface this looks like a Cleve-type hire.  It may end up being a brilliant move on Kirby's part, but I do have trouble with using his name and brilliant in the same sentence.

Respected or not, Cleve was a position coach (according to his Wikipedia biography. I'm far to young to remember him as a coach or a player). There's a big gap between being a position coach and being a coordinator who's unit leads the nation in basically all of its categories in 2011, switches schools and conferences, and, partnering with a freshman QB, has a mindblowing season again (top15 in most all offensive categories).

To be clear, Texas Tech might not be a championship caliber team with this hire, but I suspect that their offense will explode (in the good way) over the next 2-3 years. The question will be whether their defense can slow anyone down

Kingsbury was the choice of the alumni and faithful.  It is a very safe choice for Hocutt.  The choice is being absolutely hailed in Lubbock - they are ecstatic.  Even if it fails, he has cover.

Right on....I wandered over to one of their message boards just to see what kind of things were being said re: Holcutt.  From the moment Tuberville bailed, KK appeared to be the clear favorite.

Exactly the reaction of the Ohio faithful when Cleve was hired.  We all envisioned 10-0 seasons back to back with hero-come home Cleve at the helm.  We also thought since he was only the second black head coach in D-1 that we'd have a great leg up on recruiting.  None of it happened.  I'm not saying I'm predicting that same thing at Texas Tech, just that the parallels seem interesting.

Edit: Truth in packaging requires that I admit that I was one of those alumni who told the AD that Cleve would be the ideal hire.  In fact, I mentioned this to Mack before there was any mention of him in the press as a possible hire.  I knew about his work as an assistant after graduation and just had this gut feeling that he'd be the answer to our prayers.  To Mack's credit he didn't buy any of the alumni babble; however, Charles Ping did.  The rest is history.
