A very interesting article from Grantland about the income equality that now exists due to BCS TV contracts.  This doesn't help MAC coaches from being poached unless they are like Solich.  But it is interesting to see that once you make it to a certain salary level it is much easier to stay where you are now.

Author sounds like a liberal Democrat! Want to give away what others have earned!

Yes; do away with quaint notions of shared responsibilities and obligations and the tought that one's compensation depends on those with whom one works.

It's called capitalism, the fans and markets drive the prices and the market, why should the have's be forced to share the money they make?

Just think about the entire concept of splitting up the BCS money, why should OHIO get a share of money NIU earned?

Because this whole college football experience SHOULDN'T be about making money.  The NCAA should be about promoting and improving athletes and their programs at all levels, and not just the top.

Somewhere along the line, some idiot thought that making money and bloating the athletic departments was more important.

Because we both belong to and pay dues to a conference that has that as a rule. We choose to belong. NIU has certainly benefitted from our NCAA appearances in recent years. I don't see your point.  NIU is going to get the lion's share to make sure their expenses are covered.  If they don't want to share (or anyone for that matter) go independent. See how you like it. NIU tried it once; I doubt they try it again.

Sure; it's a great idea to grab all that you can get and to have no thought of others.  Why do we even have a minimum wage, for crying out loud?  If they can't earn more than, say, $1.75 per hour, then the heck with 'em.

I couldn't make it past the third paragraph of that article, and the "Vandy is a middle class school" line. No, Vandervilt is not middle class. Vanderbilt is about as upper class as it gets. Vanderbilt FOOTBALL? Maybe. MAAAAAAAAYBE. But Vanderbilt the school? No.

As far as the capitalism/socialism debate/strawman beating going on in this thread, it's moot, because higher education IS socialist. Most of the major universities in this country (including OUr fair university) are state-supported PUBLIC universities. And "private" universities are private in name only, as most receive millions and billions in federal and state research dollars--often, a bigger chunk of their budgets than tuition, in fact. And I don't know of any university, aside from maybe the service academies, and maybe a couple other special purpose schools with unique missions and structrues (Berea College for instance) , that doesn't accept federal student aid.

So, whether college--and therefore, college football--is or is not socialist, there is no debate. Whether it should be is a completely different argument, and one that's worth having. Want to know why tuition is outpacing inflation? Government subsidy. Wanna talk predatory lending? Go visit a university financial aid department. Sure, we now have more college graduates and the most educated generation the world has ever seen. But for what?  Crushing debt that maybe you'll get to pay off before you retire? A job (if you're lucky) as a bank teller making $27,000 a year that requires nothing more that arithmatic and people skills? You need to go to college to learn that? And how many 20 somethings (and I include myself in this) can change the oil in their car? An entire generation  of educated idiots that know everything but have no idea how to do anything (and again, it's my generation so I can talk bad about us...). "But I can think critically!!!" Yes, but we have enough critical thinkers. We need more critical doers.
