A faculty senate motion to go back to FCS failed by one vote.

The thread title is misleading. Their faculty senate has no real power or say in the matter.

If Faculty Senate mattered we'd be a vote away from 1-AA.  I think their little motions are cute.

I've seen crazier things happen.

Yeah, this vote was basically just to give permission for someone to draft a letter to send to the University president, who would have laughed and thrown it into the trash.

You could have the same vote here and yield similar - if not worse - results. That doesn't mean we'd immediately drop down. Faculty senate passes 100's of "resolutions" a year. But none of them really accomplish anything...

Yeah, it looks like CBS (and I) gave the vote too much importance.  Every non-AQ school -- and maybe some AQs -- may go through this every year.  Don't know why they singled out UMass.  Slow CFB news day?

If this faculty had its way, we'd soon be joining Carnegie Mellon, Case Western, Brandeis, Emory, etc. in the University Athletic Association.

Jeff, you are engaging in hyperbole, something that's not generally understood on this board.  I know this from experience because I'm one of the greatest practitioners of the art on BA and have received backlashes many times for using this God-given talent that I have.  However, let me point out that your statement would actually be true if you started it this way: "If the most vocal members of this faculty had their way, . . . "  One should not confuse the loud mouths on faculty senate and other local media darlings with the feelings of the rank and file of the faculty.  Most of the aforementioned loud mouths come from one college -- Arts and Sciences.  You would find a very different picture if you talked to typical faculty in the colleges of Engineering, Osteopathic Medicine, Communication, Education, and Health and Human Services.
