Offense
QB: Tettleton/Vick
RB: Blankenship/Boykin
WR: Cochran/S. Smith
WR: L. Smith/Waters
WR: Foster/Dovell
TE: Hill/Roback (assuming healthy)
LT: Prior/Dietz
LG: Lechner/S. Johnson
C: Powell/Welter
RG: Lucas/M. Smith
RT: McGrath/McQueen

(Doing this made me realize how stacked we are at OL. I went through at least 5 versions of the OL 2 deep before finally just settling on this.)

Defense
DE: Branz/Sayles (I know the coaches probably will work Sayles inside, but damn it I want him as a monster DE!!!)
DE: Barber/K. Smith
DT: Crutcher/Purdum
DT: Tautuaki/McLeod
OLB: Grady/W. Johnson
OLB: Moore/Brown
MLB: Russell/Schany
CB: Carrie/Fisher
CB: Shaw/Wells
FS: Hughes/Ingol
SS: Kristoff/Carpenter

Someone is going to have to make room for Seth Everhart. Wonder if he can play D? Re: Sayles, he is about the youngest in the class. I really, really hope he can redshirt to settle into college academics and to let him grow a beard before he has to take on men like Lechner and McGrath.

Not bad as a start, but I agree with your major points, that it's too early, and that the offensive line is stacked.  I would aslo add that there are some other players I expect to make some noise that aren't listed. For example Tim Edmond, Daz Patterson, Devin Bass, Jovon Johnson, and Kurt Laseak are some that I expect to see on the field. I also have a hunch we may see Dyquan Stewart getting some playing time at Nickle.

I agree with BCAT2 - I hope Sayles, Porter, and Aloese all get redshirt years. I'd rather seem them starting in year 5 than spot duty in year 1.

Everhart should get some pt at center.....he is already the long snapper.

Actually I see it as a 3 way battle at center between  Powell and Everhart and Walter.

Allen was a really good center for us during his time here.  He will be missed.

Powell though wins on the last name....wink wink.

This is probably going to be close to what we see in week 1, barring injury. My amendments:

1) Johnson starts over Lucas on the OL. Sam was playing at a starter's level before his injury. Mike is still unproven.

2) I, too, hope Sayles redshirts. But if he's better than Laseak, Bennet, Haser, and Price, lace him up.

3) I think Bass should be ahead of Fisher in the CB depth. He's always around the ball, and outside of Keith Moore, I think he's the most sure tackler on the team.

Hidden is Daz Patterson.  We all know he can do much more than return kicks.  I think he has the edge on the #2 spot.  Boykin is coming off injury, but he's also the guy I want to see getting the ball inside the 10.

Buster, TT is most effective when he has blocking around him.  The RB has to be a part of that or you will see TEs Tyler Knight/Tim Edmond back there if necessary.  I like Daz a lot, but, Ohio's every down backs have to block as well as they run.  Right now that is probably Mr. Boykin.

Hopefully they can find a few defensive ends in this group who can step up. I can't see Barber as  a three down player. More a situational pass rusher. Want to see guys like Laesek and Bennett step up. IMO Purdum starts at DT with Crutcher.

1. Definite possibility. We have so many viable OL combinations, even losing the great OL senior class we had.

2. Sayles probably does redshirt, barring injury, but I think he is more likely to be a dominant DE than a dominant DT, and if he redshirts I think it's more likely we see him as a DT. So that pick of mine is more about what I want than what will probably happen.

3. I would have Bass as the nickel. He's the new Carpenter.

Or Harrison/Ford.

It must be too early.

That make sense, but I don't agree enough to say Daz can't block.  I don't think we saw enough of him to say Boykin is that much better of a blocker.  Would Frank really not redshirt Daz if he didn't think he was ready?  I'm not saying he has #2 locked up, but I'm guessing he does have the edge since Boykin will likely be spending Spring and much of Summer rehabbing.

According to Arkley's Twitter, Daz Patterson, Justin Haser and Devin Jones have shoulder injuries and will miss 6 months. It's hoped they'll be back by MAC play.

I agree with thoughts on Daz.  He is so good that I'm sure Frank will figure out a way to get him on the field much more this year.  Not only do I see a three-man rotation at RB, I wouldn't be surprised to see him come in at WR on some plays.  He is probably our most explosive offensive player.  He makes up for his short statute by his strength, speed, agility and desire.  He is has the potential, IMHO, to be a game changer in the way DJ was in basketball for us.  And, to top it off, he is a class guy who comes from a very educationally oriented and close-knit family.   In some respects he kind of reminds me of LaVon.

Two...or more....back sets.

We did it a bit last year.  It's gotta be in the arsenal.  Especially at the goal line.

Agreed! I loved the 2 back (one lined up at TT's shoulder) set the one time we saw it last year and I would absolutely love to see some full house (a back behind Tyler and one on each shoulder) type stuff.

I know it's only a two deep, but I think you should have Daz and Boykin tied for second.  The reasoning is because they're great for different sets and situations.  Beau is our everydown type back; he can do one thing or the other.  Daz excels when he can get into the open field or on misdirection plays where his quickness burns people, where Boykin is a guy who can run people flat over.  Not saying that Daz can't pull off a power move or Boykin can't be dangerous in the open field, but they are so good at their roles that you want them to be a situational back that can give Beau a breather rather than picking one or the other to carry the load.

And we wouldn't have to tweak the offense much out of that set. You can still run the read option to either the strong or weak side, with a wheel route or screen with the other back to take the place of the slot.

Considering Daz unfortunately is going to be out until around the start of MAC play, I think it's fair to put Boykin as second string. It's hard to say exactly when and how well he'll come back this year and Boykin certainly has earned the second spot. But certainly, when healthy, I think Daz certainly will see more time this year in important spots.

What's wrong with Daz.  I hadn't heard about his injury, or if I did, I've forgotten.

Shoulder. Daz, Haser and Devin Jones all out of OOC play. Taken from Arkley's article after the first scrimmage.
