So I was visiting a friend over near Waverly yesterday and much to my surprise saw this on a bench on the side of US 23. I'd imagine there's probably some others throughout southeast Ohio. A pretty unique/creative way to get the word out...and I like the "my state - my team" thing too:

Wow...that is great!! A very unique (and I'd imagine cost effective) means of advertising.

Would love to see this advertisement in Central Ohio.

Saw the following Sunday afternoon in Newark: A Toyota with two stickers in rear window: Ohio University sticker in lower left and a Miami University sticker in lower right. Better still, the car's license plate: BOBHAWK. Had Licking County plates.

Was going to pull the window down at stop light and ask the obvious questions, but my daughter insisted that that would be embarassing.

My wife and I could be the BobHawks of Butler County........but she probably would actually have to care about their success first?

In addition to the advertising angles talked about, this should be a sticker (bumper sticker also acceptable), and have marketing send them to incoming freshmen. Hell, I would want some to put up in Columbus.

I think that bench would look perfect on Lane Ave in Cbus.

I have never seen an Ohio Bobcats billboard in the Cincinnati area. I know it's not cheap but if the private school I work for can afford to buy 10 billboards a major D-1 athletic program should be able to.

I can hardly listen to a Reds radio broadcast anymore, thanks to that stupid Fiami ad (Dusty Baker's ineptitude doesn't help).

Perhaps...but wouldn't you be better off spending your time/money close to Athens where people are more likely to go to games?

On the back of my schedule card it says "the best entertainment value in southeast Ohio". I think it's clear where the AD is looking for more fans. It's Gallipolis, Waverly, Logan, etc. Not necessarily Cincinnati and Cleveland. And in my experience, that's probably your best bet.

In a previous life I worked for an ad agency and we always tried to steer our clients away from billboards. The cost is too high and the ROI is too low. They're usually an ego buy.

Generally I want to agree, but it depends on the product. Some things are custom made for billboards, like "McDonald's, next exit." Anything that's not primarily about location (next exit), is probably a waste, or would require a massive purchase of space to flood a market, which, like you said, would probably result in a lousy ROI.

true, that's the difference between a Call to Action campaign vs Brand Awareness. A call to action has a specific request (exit here for food, call here for tickets) where as the brand awareness would just say McDonalds, I'm Lovin It or OHIO. My Team. My State., etc. The Buy Tickets boards could be effective within a certain radius of Athens though.

but, the more I think about it, a big ol' My Team My State billboard could have some value if you stuck it in a controversial area, like right by another school's campus or strip of bars. Something that would create a bit of a stir. Like a big green middle finger in a sea of scarlet and regret.

Billboards are still useful as part of an overall ad campaign.  I always liked the one on 33 heading south toward Athens with the football schedule and Solich's picture on it.  It's attention-getting, informational (but not overly) and presents the recognizable image of the product (Ohio football).  But unless you're asking your girl to marry you, they shouldn't be the only vehicle.

Saw a Miami billboard ad off of I-294 in Chicago about a year ago. Took all of my willpower not to plow into it.

Because of the sucking. I get it.

I love the idea of a Guerrilla campaign.  Send out a mass amount of bumper stickers with this on it and have people put them up around where they live.  Granted we would have to make sure it wasn't a crime but it would be cool to walk around a town like Cleveland and see these all over.

eh, sending out a notice with them should cover the university. "show your pride, but do not post on buildings, vehicles, etc. for which you are not authorized to or in ways which violate state or local law."

Ohio's home is in Southeast Ohio, but we are not Southeast Ohio Univeristy. We are Ohio. I want the whole state represented in Athens. The majority of our students come from Cleveland, Columbus or Cincinnati. I am all for going after those markets. They have room for massive growth. They are also the Ohio Bobcats TV markets that everyone claims do not exist.

I've seen crazier things happen.
