Well it pains me to compliment the RedSkins non-hockey fans, all 12 of em BUT on their message board they each desired the WR to be gone--no questions asked!  Harwell is a MAC star and yet the fans draw the line and say OUT OF HERE.

STAY CLASSY MIAMI...

Females hide in locked bedroom from intruder

Around 2:56 a.m. Saturday, OPD officers were dispatched to Miami Commons in response to an unwanted person refusing to leave a unit’s front door, according to OPD.

Senior Nicholas Harwell first sent one of the two female residents of the unit a picture text message from inside her storage shed. Having searched the unlocked shed, he claimed in the message that things were missing, according to OPD.

The same resident received another text from Harwell indicating that he had removed his cap and gown from her car. She had previously purchased them for Harwell, and intended to hold them until she was repaid, according to OPD.

Harwell then approached the unit and kicked in the front door, damaging the doorframe. The girls feared for their lives and locked themselves in a bedroom, as Harwell had previously caused physical harm to the female recipient of his text messages, according to OPD. The victims in the bedroom upon officers’ arrival, according to OPD.

An inspection of the victim’s car found both her and Harwell’s cap and gown missing, according toOPD.

As OPD was unable to tell whether Harwell entered the residence, he was not charged with trespassing, but rather with unauthorized use of a vehicle, vehicle trespass, criminal damaging and theft, according to OPD. He was carted to Butler County Jail, according to OPD.

He'll pay for the damages, take an anger management course, sit a couple games and be on the field by October.  Nobody got hurt, there was little property damage and it doesn't sound like he even threatened bodily harm to anybody (the girls feared for their lives, but it doesn't say why; for some people, having someone kicking on your door at 3 a.m. makes them fear for their lives, even if there's no real threat) so the court's not going to do much, so it'll be a code of conduct issue.

He's got a shot in the supplemental draft. He might just say to hell with it, let's get paid.

How sad is it that the "Police Blotter" forum on their board is more active than their football and basketball forums?

That seems to be why.

Hopefully he was in the "proper" Miami attire while this unfortunate incident was going down: Beige Khaki Dockers and neatly ironed Polo Shirt.  If so, it should help to get him a lighter sentence.

All kids that age are idiots sometimes.  I did some really idiotic things when I was at Ohio.  I also recall that we had someone get involved in a 3 a.m. assault on the South Green a year or two ago.  Don't remember the details, but I remember at the time we were wondering how stupid it was for him to do it.

Most are not idiots at all.  Treat them like idiots, call them idiots, you get idiots.  Present adult behavior, expect adult behavior and most will stay out of trouble.  Not be saints, but, not cross established lines.

I meant "idiots" in the sense that some subset of our team are idiots and soon one of them will make headlines.

The only question is: will they destroy the town baseball field? Or hurl bricks at people on the street? Or enter people's homes while they sleep and then run through their sliding glass doors? Or run amok with their vehicle down Court St, leaving several cars damaged in their wake. Or punch an equine in the face?

Only time will tell.

Though it is true that any time you have a large group of males aged 18-21, in time one or more of them will do something stupid, it is neither correct nor appropriate to call them "idiots", nor especially to use the word in a broad way to apply to the group as a whole.

Excusing some of these incidents as just "young kids being young kids" is misguided. Frankly, some (and I emphasize some) are poor students with violent tendencies that are in Athens for exactly that reason. When they start hurling bricks at people on the street (or hitting their girlfriend like Harwell), it should surprise no one.

Even back in 2006 when the situation was at it's worst, someone compared the record of the football team with the masthead of the Post, and found the later had just as bad of a record. In recent years the situation has been much improved. Does anyone here seriously doubt that overall, for the last few years, the football team as a group has a lower arrest rate than the average for males in the overall Ohio University student body?

While there are no doubt some football players with academic issues, too, it would also not surprise me if the average GPA of the football team was comparable to the student body as a whole. Football takes a lot of commitment from people who participate in it. That commitment may show in better grades than you might otherwise expect.

If you want to take them to task as a group as being worse than the overall student population, I think the obligation falls on you to provide, not anecdotal evidence, but statistical evidence of that. What is their arrest rate? What is their dropout rate? What about the overall student population? That should be data that is easy enough to obtain.

I agree completely. It seems like something useful to track. People often wonder why Colleges are involved in sports at all. Then answer is that it has been a longstanding belief that the discipline you needed in order to excel at sports would improve you in other areas as well, and that learning to compete is sports was a good thing, not a waste of time, and was certainly not something that hindered your academic ans social progress. Is that still true today? I personally believe it probably is, but I lack the hard numbers to know.

Why then, LC, do we not have a single football player majoring in engineering or science? That itself is a sign that it seriously impacts academic behavior. Most of the team is majoring in Recreational Management or Healthcare Administration.

So a GPA comparison between football players and the general student body would be completely unfair, given that most of the players have joke majors.

I'd bet $ there are others majoring in Engineering or Science.

Industrial technology doesn't count, nice try though.

I should also note that no one on the roster currently has listed (on their bio) any science or engineering. Of course, that could be wrong or outdated.

As an Industrial Engineer I do think "Industrial Technology" could count as engineering, depending on what is being taught. Of course, some engineers don't think even Industrial Engineering is "real engineering". Note that Weller and Thompson are both members of the engineering honor society, Epsilon Pi Tau, so the honor society apparently considers their program of study to be engineering.
